Pancho Villa Death Day
Celebrated Big Time
 He went out Bonnie and Clyde style in a
1919 Dodge which is a center piece
of the annual fiesta
Recovering from the In-
dependence Day celebra-
tions, it’s nice to have time out
for the rest of the week. But
don’t slack off entirely, be-
cause in Mexico, there’s al-
ways another fiesta brewing.
This time we have to
cross the brine to find the
more flamboyant fiestas. By
week’s end, an almost two
week long fiesta is starting up
in Chihuahua to commemo-
rate the assassination of the
revolutionary rascal Pancho
Villa. You probably remem-
ber that Francisco “Pancho”
Villa was a leading figure in
the 1910 Mexican Revolu-
tion. “Of all Mexican Revo-
lution leaders, no one was as
controversial as Pancho Villa;
no one has remained so
strongly in people’s memory
as he has”, says Jorge
Carrera Robles, president of
the Chihuahuan Culture Insti-
tute.
The fiesta attracts many
performances of classical and
folk music, book presenta-
tions, lectures and groups of
minstrels strolling through the
historic center of Chihuahua.
Getting there can be an ad-
venture by itself. The last time
I went, I took the ferry as a
walk-on from La Paz to
Topolobampo, got a ride into
Los Mochis, and went on the
famous ‘Chepe’ train ride,
right through the massive
Copper Canyon district to
Chihuahua. It was great.
The assassination of
Pancho actually happened on

July 20, 1923 when he was
45 years old and retired from
fighting, and something this
mordacious calls for, at least
in Mexico, a boisterous
party. The Pancho Villa fiesta
originated in 1996 and his
death is reconstructed every
year on the exact spot where
the caper went down. Re-
enactments are popular in
Mexico and as if there are not
enough casualties in the
northern states in real life, a
few dressed-up characters as
Pancho and his cronies get

when they appear in their
1919 Dodge sedan from
around a corner. Not unlike
Bonnie’s and Clyde’s de-
mise. Pancho’s body took
nine of the 43 bullets fired into
this car and died almost in-

years later and is still miss-
ing.
Nowadays, the highlight of
the fiesta is a cavalcade on
horseback from the city of
Chihuahua to Hidalgo del
Parral, where the assassina-

gressively larger; with last year
more then 3,000 riders par-

forced them to build churches
on the ruins to conserve the
holiness of the new structure
but identifying it with the new
religion. The church of
Carmen Alto in Oaxaca is a
typical example of this. It is
built on the ruins of the indig-
enous temple of Xilonen,

Explains Drug Cartels
 Giving speech detailing reasons for all the
violence, and why it’s important to fight it
Today I would like to talk
to you about a problem
which I know concerns
Mexican families; the lack of
law and order.

I am aware of citizens’
demands to put an end to
crime throughout the country.
Which is why, since the first
day of my government, we
have forcefully combated or-
ganized crime. We have
done so in the Federal Gov-
ernment not only because it
is our obligation, but because
your well-being and the fu-
ture of our children is at stake.
I would like to explain how
the country arrived at the situ-
ation we are now experienc-
ing.
For decades, organized
crime was almost exclusively
concerned with trafficking
drugs to the United States,
which was and still is the
world’s largest drug con-
sumer. For criminals, then, it
was important to secure high-
ways and one or two border
crossing points. It suited them
not to be seen. They kept a
low profile. But from the mid-
1990s onwards, they also
wanted to sell drugs here,
among Mexican children and
youth.
That is when the violence
began, because in order to
control the local drug market
and keep their rivals away
from the places they wished
to control, criminals needed

to intimidate not only other
criminals but also the authori-
ties and society. They began
to fight among themselves,
engaging in turf wars and also
tried to scare the government
and citizens. Their actions
went from being low profile
to an overt challenge against
everyone.
And this was exacerbated
in 2004, when the U.S. lifted
the ban on the sale of assault
weapons. Since then, it has
been very easy for criminal
groups to purchase powerful
weapons in the U.S. and
bring them to Mexico for
criminal purposes. In some
places, this situation ex-
ceeded the capacity of secu-
rity and justice authorities,
especially municipal and
some state ones, who were
not prepared to deal with a
problem of this size and were
often subdued by corruption
or intimidation.
Once they were estab-
lished in a territory, gangs and
criminals began to branch out
to other crimes, such as ex-
tortion, kidnapping innocent
people, and controlling local
crime. In the beginning, they
only extorted money from
other criminals: those who
stole cars, sold adulterated
alcohol or stolen gasoline,
but later they began to charge
protection money or operat-
ing fees from honest citizens.
This is the main and most se-
rious problem I observed,
which is why the federal gov-
ernment had to intervene, be-

cause criminal organizations
were beginning to get directly
involved with people, citizens
like you. And we could not
allow it nor will we permit it
now.
That is what the country
was like at the beginning of
my government. It is crucial
to act firmly to defend Mexi-
cans’ lives, integrity, assets
and families. It would have
been easy to ignore the prob-
lem, as some suggest, but it
is the duty of every govern-
ment to protect citizens, and
to respect and enforce the
law. And when the govern-
ment does not act, criminals
end up subjecting Mexican
families to their ambitions and
whims.
And I want to be clear.
Ours is not a struggle solely
or mainly against drug traf-
fickers. It is a struggle against
every expression of orga-
nized crime that affects citi-
zens. It is a struggle against
those who took over towns
or communities with weap-
ons.
That is why it is a fight
worth fighting, and one that
must be waged. And this is
not nor should it be a fight by
the president alone but by all
Mexicans, particularly those
who have public responsibil-
ity in government at either the
federal, state or municipal
level, or in other branches
such as the legislative or ju-
dicial branches, to act on be-
half of people.
And I say that it should be
a fight by all Mexicans, be-
cause criminals make no dis-
tinction and harm all sectors
equally. That is why your par-
ticipation is vital.

of all varieties of cacti in the
world, is not surprising that
our people use them in many
ways, taking advantage of
virtually the entire plant. De-
pending on the type of cac-
tus and leaf, some have been
used to make ropes, fishing
nets and fabrics, leaving them
to dry in the sun and then
spinning them. This technique
was used to produce baskets
as well. The leaves were of-
ten used as containers for
baking in pits, which brought
out the flavor of the food.
From the pulpy center of
the agave cactus, comes the
famous tequila and mezcal.
Other beverages available
from some cacti are called
agua miel, or sweet water.
With a tool similar to a straw
they extract the inside liquid
of the plant and drink it, the
name says it all and then af-
ter fermentation it turns alco-
holic and is called pulque.

often boiled and mashed with
stone tools, which resulted in
a highly adhesive mortar, ex-

a bit up in those mountains
behind us, much more than
here near the ocean, and we
would have more fresh wa-
ter to use if we had better in-
frastructure to deliver it here,
but that’s for another story.
The estuary is the rea-
son for San Jose’s existence;
as it was the only source of
fresh water for merchant
ships for many miles. In fact

Dorado (aka mahi mahi or
dolphin fish) will satisfy any
angler’s need for action, chal-
lenge, excitement, or just
downright fun. They possess
the most fish-worthy of
characteristics…they aggres-
sively take almost any bait,
lure or fly thrown at them;

they’re strong, colorful, acro-

Dorado can often be
found under almost anything
floating on the surface, from
a piece of rope to sargasso,
a form of seaweed. Several
years ago, I accompanied a
group of our clients on boats
out of Loreto. We spread out
in search of anything floating
in the water that might pro-
vide shade for baitfish to
gather and, in turn, attract
dorado. We had been look-
ing for about an hour when
the VHF radio crackled to
life. One of our boats had
found a floating log and the
dorado where thick. A quick
calculation on the GPS told
us that we were three miles
from the spot. So with pedal

fathom line but they seem le-
thargic and not very hungry.

where the water is much
warmer, there have been a

few blue marlin. Most boats
were having about 20% suc-
cess on the fish using
bait…hooking one out of
five. The blue marlin were
feeding on tuna.
The good news is that we
finally had yellowfin show up.
It was a long run up into the
Sea of Cortez for the 50 to
100 pound class fish just to
the north of the Gordo Banks
and only some of the boats
gave it a shot. However, for
many of those that did, it was
worth the run. Scattered
pods of porpoise were hold-
ing the fish and it was a mat-
ter of finding the right pod.
There were smaller fish be-
ing found closer to home but
it seemed that the farther you
went, the larger the fish be-

came.
No concentrations of
dorado have been reported
recently but there were some
nice fish found up in the same
area as the tuna. The warm
water was the key, as was
finding anything floating; usu-
ally there was at least one fish
in the area. Slow trolling a
live bait in front of the por-
poise pods while looking for
tuna resulted in several
dorado instead, with the larg-
est going just over 30
pounds.
Inshore fishing has been a
bit off with the larger swells
that made it uncomfortable.
Those that managed to fish
did well on the Pacific side
with snapper to 20 pounds,
some sierra, some amber-
jack and a lot of action from
jack crevalle. The Cortez
side of the Cape had fish in- Westin Resort
shore as well with roosterfish
making a good showing in the no sardina but schools of Puerto Los Cabos jetties.

them to strike. Overall,
catches for tuna have been
limited…it’s a matter of lo-
cating the fish and getting
them to strike.
Dorado action has been
slow; however, recently there
were a few larger fish en-
countered scattered through-
out the area, mainly single
fish, hitting lures and bait.
Schools of bolito are late to
appear this season but when
more of these baitfish be-
come established on the fish-
ing grounds, we anticipate the
numbers of game fish will in-
crease.
Wahoo were being lo-
cated near La Fortuna to
Vinorama. Anglers reported
hook ups while trolling lures
and bait along the 150' to 200'
line. Anglers targeting these
fish were fortunate if they
landed one of them, though
other days some boats ac-
counted for up to three wa-
hoo, while reportedly losing
other strikes as well. Sizes
ranged from 25 to 50
pounds.
Bottom action was spotty
with mixed reports of bonito,
snapper, amberjack and ca-
brilla. More bonito were
found near Iman and San Luis
while using yo-yo jigs or
trolling Rapalas.
Inshore there have been
good numbers of roosterfish,
some over forty pounds. Jack
crevalle were prevalent as
well, with some near record
weights of 30 pounds. Dog-
tooth snapper to 45 pounds
were landed by anglers troll-

Italian Food That Makes
Your Mouth Water
I love Italian food. Ever
since I arrived here I have
been searching for a good
Italian restaurant that serves
the kind of food that makes
your mouth water and leaves
you wanting to go back again
and again. I tried many Ital-
ian restaurants in Los Cabos,
but they all fell short of what
I was looking for, until one
day a friend and I stumbled
across a gem of a place
called La Trattoria.
It’s often said that the best
restaurants are unassuming
places that are usually found
off the beaten path, far from
the usual tourist haunts.
But that’s not the case with
La Trattoria, which is not
tucked away on some side
street far away from the
hustle and bustle of down-
town. In fact, this Italian res-
taurant is right in the heart of
Cabo on Marina Blvd., at
Plaza Bonita mall, smack in
between Hard Rock Café
and the new Starbucks,
across from Squid Roe. It’s
been there for almost 15
years. Just a few years ago,
La Trattoria changed hands,
and the new owners have
done a fine job with the place.
For one, La Trattoria has
an excellent selection of
wines from all over the world.
The owner of La Trattoria,
Juan Castaneda (or “Don
Juan”, as his employees know
him) was there when we
stumbled in one day, he rec-
ommended a great bottle of
Malbec from Argentina, Al-
tos Las Hormigas Reserva.
It paired perfectly with our
main course. During the
course of our meal, I discov-
ered that Juan imports most
of his wines himself and sells
them to hotels and restau-
rants all over Mexico, not just
Cabo.
Aside from being a top-
notch wine critic, Juan is a
personable guy who grew up
in Southern California, where
he was a computer scientist
before chucking it all for
Cabo for a different kind of

Gringo clientele expect from a
fine dining experience in terms
of service, quality and presen-
tation. Another big advantage
to dining at La Trattoria is the
price. The tab you run here
will be considerably less than
what you would expect to pay
if you were to eat in your hotel
or at one of the many over-
priced Italian restaurants in the
area. I grew up eating Italian
food, and make it a point to
travel every year to Italy on
business. La Trattoria has all
of the elements of an authentic
Trattoria in Sorrento or Rome.
The interior of the restau-
rant is in the traditional Italian
style – simple and spacious
enough to accommodate
groups. There is even a back
room with it’s own bar that can
seat up to 30 people, which
they often close off for private
parties. Juan mentioned to me
that they are going to start us-
ing this room to host a monthly
wine and food tasting with their
executive chef, so make sure
to ask about this when you
stop in. Overall, La Trattoria
can entertain a large group
while at the same time main-
taining a quaint, elegant envi-
ronment that is perfect for
couples seeking a romantic
dinner
Now for the food…
First Course: I chose the
Caesar salad for the first
course. It was delicious, and I
decided to order a glass of the
house Pinot Grigio, which was
crisp, dry and refreshing. My
friend ordered the fried
calamari, which was also ex-
cellent, and paired well with the
Pinot Grigio. We also sampled
Lupe’s famous baby back ribs
cooked on a mesquite-fired
grille. (Lupe is a local institu-
tion; he also serves the best
after hour burritos in Cabo
from a cart right next to El
Squid Roe.)
Main Course: Because I
was feeling particularly hungry,

I went for the meat lover’s
pizza, a mesquite-fired oven
pizza with Italian sausage,
ham, pepperoni, mozzarella
cheese, onions, and green
peppers. This again was first
class and quite substantial.
My friend ordered the lobster
ravioli served in a shrimp-
based red sauce. Very tasty
indeed!
Dessert: For dessert I
went for the chocolate cake
with vanilla ice cream, since I
have a sweet tooth, was very
much to my tasting. My friend
loved the tiramisu, which he
ate while knocking back an
espresso. Not Mexican
espresso, but the real deal:
Caffee Diemme coffee, an au-
thentic Italian brand that’s
even better than Illy or
Lavazza.
After dinner, we stepped
outside to enjoy an after din-
ner drink at the horseshoe
shaped wooden bar on the
terrace facing Marina Blvd.
and Squid Roe. Our intent
was to dine at La Trattoria
and head out for a night on
the town somewhere else, but
we had such a great time sit-
ting at the bar, listening to
music, people watching and
laughing it up with the Mar-
tini-making Mario and the
bottle-flipping Jonathan, that
we didn’t leave until closing –
at 4 am!
If you like good Italian
food, this well-known Cabo
Italian restaurant won’t disap-
point. The food and service
are first class – so much so
that I’ve lunched or dined
there regularly since writing
this review. They have $10
dollar lunch specials, which
include food and beer. For
me, La Trattoria was great
value for the quality of food
and service. And when you
stop by, make sure to say hello
to Don Juan!

sustaining vitality. A
¨moonscape¨, as I have
heard some first time visi-
tors call it... Nothing could
be farther from the truth!
The uniqueness of our ter-
rain and climate has cre-
ated a plethora of life,
adapting itself so uniquely
to the challenges of this
particular environment,
that some species can only
be found here in Baja. Ex-

Prickly Poppies of Baja:
The genera Argemone of
the Papaverceae Family or
Poppy Family is well rep-
resented here in Baja Cali-
fornia. With about 31-32
species found in the world,
5 are endemic here in Baja
California. Two thirds of
them in Mexico, the south-
west US, Hawaii & Central
America. They are a true
New World native.
In the spring, with their
prickly leaves and seed cap-
sules, and yellow or white
flowers with four to six pet-
als, they can’t be missed.
Their flower is distinctly
poppy shaped and similar in
structure to their more famous

The Baja argemones are
annual or perennial herbs or
a non-woody plant with a
single strong main stem that
has a yellow or orange sap
containing latex, and has
sharp, prickly spines on both
sides of the tip of its pinnately
lobed leaves.
For one species, the
argemone platyceras
(munita), this defensive struc-

tural mechanism against ani-
mal foraging extends over the
surface of the leaves and
stems themselves, making all
varieties of the plant unpalat-
able to livestock. But, since
all parts of aregomes plants
are poisonous as well, this
desert beauty has a double-
defence system, with the ex-
ception of the seeds, that are
favoured and tolerated by
desert doves, this plant is

vade the United States are pen-
niless. Mexican corporations
are snapping up well known
U.S. brand names, opening
U.S. factories, and investing
millions of pesos north of their
own country.

USA) that are creating jobs.”
In some cases, Mexican
companies have taken over
U.S. brands. Others have ex-
panded their U.S. operations
or increased their investments
in U.S. firms.
Newcomers to the U.S.
market include Grupo Lala,
Mexico’s largest dairy com-
pany. Lala bought a yogurt
plant in Omaha in 2007. In
2009, it purchased Dallas

based National Dairy Holdings,
which controls the Borden
brand and 18 regional dairies
selling milk under the names
Flav-O-Rich, Dairy Fresh,
Velda Farms, Sinton’s, Cream
O’Weber, Goldenrod and oth-
ers.
Grupo Bimbo, Latin
America’s largest baked-
goods company, has also ex-
panded its U.S. operations. In
2009, Mexico City-based
Bimbo bought the U.S. baked-
goods operations of Weston
Foods for $2.4 billion, taking
over 22 industrial bakeries and
4,000 distribution routes. In all,
the Mexican company has 35
bakeries in the USA churning
out national brands such as
Entenmann’s pastries, Boboli
pizza crusts and Thomas’ En-
glish Muffins to regional brands
such as Brownberry bread and
Mrs. Baird’s snack cakes.
About 43% of Bimbo’s 2009
sales were in the U.S.
New investment in the U.S.

from $3.6 billion in 2005 to
nearly $8 billion in 2008, ac-
cording to the latest statistics
from the U.S. Department of
Commerce. Mexican compa-
nies employ about 59,000
people in the U.S. Like Bimbo
and Lala, many of the Mexi-
can companies operate regional
subsidiaries, a structure that ob-
scures their immense size.

realize (the companies) are
Mexican,” says Teresa
Gutierrez-Haces, an economist
at the National Autonomous
University of Mexico.
The Mexican investment in
the U.S. is good news for both
countries, says Lorraine Eden,
a professor of management at
Texas A&M University. The
USA benefits with jobs and tax
income, while the stream of for-
eign profits strengthens
Mexico’s economy. “In the
end, it improves growth and
competitiveness back home in
Mexico,” Eden says. “It’s a
two-way flow, and it’s good
for both of us.”
Mexican billionaire Carlos
Slim has expanded his empire
into the USA. In March,
Forbes magazine ranked him
the world’s richest person,
beating out Americans Bill
Gates and Warren Buffett with
a net worth of $53.5 billion. In
2008, Slim bought a 6.9%
share in The New York Times
Co., making him the largest
shareholder outside the Ochs-
Sulzberger family. He increased
his stake in the Saks Fifth Av-
enue department stores from
10.9% to 18%. And now Slim
has entered the Manhattan real
estate market, buying an office
building on Fifth Avenue for
$140 million. América Móvil,
a cell phone company con-
trolled by Slim, has increased
its U.S. subscribers 26% since
2008 from 11 million to 15 mil-
lion. The company sells prepaid
cell phone service under the
names TracFone, Straight Talk
and Net10.
Some Mexican companies
have benefited from the spread
of Hispanic culture in the USA.
Gruma, which claims to be the
world’s largest maker of torti-
llas, wraps and corn flour,
makes 47% of its sales in the
U.S. and Europe, thanks to the
growing popularity of Mexican
food. The company has 25
bakeries and flour mills in
Texas, California, Indiana and

LigaMAC runs a com-
prehensive education pro-
gram called ACE, which fo-
cuses on keeping children in
school, by providing them at
least the minimum essentials
they need to attend.
LigaMAC works with social
workers in the school to
identify the children in dan-
ger of dropping out because
they don’t have enough
money to buy uniforms,
backpacks, shoes, and ma-
terials – approximately $200
per year.
