Classic massage/Swedish massage

The most widely recognized and commonly used category of massage is the Swedish massage
aka classical. The Swedish massage techniques vary from light to vigorous. Swedish massage
uses five styles of strokes. The five basic strokes are effleurage (sliding or gliding), petrissage
(kneading), tapotement (rhythmic tapping), friction (cross fiber or with the fibers) and
vibration/shaking. Swedish massage has shown to be helpful in reducing pain, joint stiffness,
and improving function in patients with osteoarthritis of the knee over a period of eight
weeks. The development of Swedish massage is often inaccurately credited to Per Henrik
10

Ling, though the Dutch practitioner Johann Georg Mezger applied the French terms to name
the basic strokes. The term "Swedish" massage is actually only recognized in English and
Dutch speaking countries, and in Hungary. Elsewhere (including Sweden) the style is referred
to as "classic massage".

The benefits of Swedish classic massage are many:

It increases blood and lymph circulation
Has a calming effect on the nervous system
Releases toxins from the muscles
Improves muscle tone, ability and posture
Reduces both physical and mental stress
Helps to maintain muscle elasticity and suppleness
Promotes health and general well being

Indications for Swedish Classic Massage are:

Muscle tension and knots
Contractures
General muscle aches and pains
Preventative measures
Relaxation

Contraindications:

It is Similar to a Swedish/Relaxation massage. A deep tissue massage uses slower strokes but
much firmer strokes and pressure are used. Your therapist may use deep finger/thumb, elbows
or knuckles for adding pressure that focuses on particular areas of your body. The focus is on
the deepest layers of muscle tissue, tendons and fascia (the protective layer surrounding
muscles, bones and joints).
11

Indications
Deep tissue massage usually focuses on a specific problem, such as chronic muscle pain,
injury rehabilitation, and the following conditions:

Osteoarthritis pain

When there is chronic muscle tension or injury, there are usually adhesions (bands of painful,
rigid tissue) in muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Adhesions can block circulation and cause
pain, limited movement, and inflammation.
Deep tissue massage works by physically breaking down these adhesions to relieve pain and
restore normal movement.
Contraindications

* Immediately after chemotherapy or radiation, unless recommended by your doctor
* People with osteoporosis should consult their doctor before getting a massage

disease, check with your doctor before having a massage
* Pregnant women should check with their doctor first if they are considering getting a
massage. Massage in pregnant women should be done by massage therapists who are trained
in pregnancy massage.
* Massage should not be done directly over bruises, inflamed skin, unhealed wounds,
tumours, abdominal hernia, or areas of recent fractures.

Benefits
* Reduces chronic pain (lower back, carpel tunnel, osteoarthritis, tennis elbow)

12

* Improves mobility (helps with posture imbalances)

* Reduces muscle soreness, tightness and spasms from physical activity
* Triggers the release of oxytocin and serotonin (boosts mood and relaxation)
* Reduces cortisol and heart rate (lowers stress)
When a deep tissue massage is done correctly, the benefits are experienced within the next
few days. You may feel rejuvenated, or a bit sore, depending on the particular therapy session.
Any stiffness or pain experienced after a deep tissue massage is a completely normal reaction
and should subside within 24-72 hours.
Duration
A massage session should be customized to the client's individual needs. It can be offered in
combination with other styles of massage, as a whole-body treatment or concentrated in one
area, for example the lower back or shoulders.
