SEMESTER 2 Test 1
Higher Tier
SP5 Light and the Electromagnetic Spectrum Wednesday
Time: 40 minutes 24 / 02 / 2017
Instructions
Use black ink or ball pen.
Fill in the boxes at the top of this page with your name.
Answer all questions
Answer the questions in the spaces provided
there may be more space than you need.
Calculators may be used
Any diagrams may NOT be accurately drawn, unless otherwise indicated.
You must show all your working with your answer clearly identified at the end of your solution.
Information
The total mark of this paper is 40.
The marks of each question are shown in brackets use this as a guide as to how much time to spend
on each question.
In questions marked with an asterisk (*), marks will awarded for your ability to structure your answer
logically showing how the points that you make are related or follow on from each other where
appropriate.
Advice
Read each question carefully before you start to answer it.
Try to answer every question.
Check your answers if you have time at the end.

1. (a) The diagram shows light hitting a glass block and being reflected.
Some of the wavefronts are also shown.
glass
Draw the normal, the light ray and at least three wavefronts in the glass.
[3 marks]
(b) Optical fibres are made of an internal glass core and an external glass coating, as shown
below. Light is moving through an optical fibre by total internal reflection.
(i) Continue the ray to show how it moves through the optical fibre.
[1 mark]
The density of the glass coating is than the density of the glass core.
(iii) The optical fibres cannot be bent too much. If they are bent, light that reaches the
other end will be weaker. Explain why.
[3 marks]
weaker light ray

2. Converging lenses are used as magnifying lenses to produce real and virtual images.
image
object F
lens
Fig. 1
(a) (i) Draw a second ray in Fig. 1 that determines the position of the image.
[1 mark]
(ii) Draw the necessary rays in Fig. 2 below to determine the position of the image.
[3 marks]
object F
lens
Fig. 2
(iii) Use Fig. 1 and Fig. 2 to explain the differences between real and virtual images.
[3 marks]
(iv) Which of the two lenses, in Fig. 1 or Fig. 2 is more powerful? Explain your choice.
[2 marks]
(b) The figure below shows in detail how light passes into a glass lens, but the angles shown are
exaggerated. Converging lenses were used in telescopes to focus light of distant stars and
obtain images of stars.
red ray
white ray from a star
blue ray
lens
(i) The following statement appears in a text: The higher the frequency the slower the
speed of electromagnetic waves in glass.
Use the figure above to explain whether you agree or not with this statement.
[3 marks]
(ii) Explain why, when using thick converging lenses, the image obtained on a screen from
distant stars is blur.
[2 marks]

3. Colour filters are often used to change the perception that we have.
A red and a green colour filter are placed in front of a source of white light.
The two filters overlap over a small region, as shown below.
red filter
source of green
white light filter
C
observer
green filter
B
red
filter
A
State and explain what colour the observer will see in each of the regions A, B and C based on
how filters operate.
[6 marks]

4. (a) The figure below shows the absorption of electromagnetic waves by the atmosphere.
Use the figure to answer the questions (i) and (ii) that follow.
(i) An astronauts suit has a coating to reflect UV radiation. Explain the dangers from UV
radiation and explain why such measures are not necessary on Earth.
[3 marks]
UV reflecting
coating
(ii) The figures below show the Arecibo telescope in Puerto Rico and the Spitzer Infrared
Space Telescope. Suggest what waves the Arecibo can detect on Earth and why the
Spitzer has to operate in space.
[3 marks]
(b) The figure below shows water heating solar panels used excessively in Cyprus.
In its basic structure it consists of copper water pipes (copper being one of the best heat
conductors) sealed in a dark coloured container.

SEMESTER 2 TEST 1
MARK SCHEME
p. 2 & 3
1. (a)
n [1 mark]
glass
3 wavefronts
perpendicular to ray
smaller (by eye)
[1 mark]
towards n [1 mark]
p. 4 & 5
2. (a) (i)
parallel to principal axis and through F
[1 mark]
image
object F
lens
(ii)
object F
(ii) Colours bend differently / have different speeds / different refraction etc. [1 mark]
Do not focus on a single point [1 mark]
p. 6
3. A = red [1 mark]
B = black [1 mark]
C = green [1 mark]
& any three from [3 marks]
Filters absorb all colours
Filters will transmit only one / their own colour
Red filter will allow only red through (the rest absorbed)
Green will allow only green through (the rest absorbed)
In B the green filter will transmit green which will be absorbed by the red filter
p. 7 & 8
4. (a) (i) UV cause DNA mutation & skin cancer / melanomata [1 mark]
100% UV absorbed by atmosphere [1 mark]
=> no UV reaches the surface (or similar) [1 mark]
