2.3.3 Heat Loads Into Simulator Hall Ambient
The simulator hall air conditioning system should be able to dissipate the heat emitted by the visual system
projectors and other FFS systems located in the simulator hall. The equipment emitted heat loads based on an
average typical system operation are:
Table 2-2 Heat Dissipation Requirements

Room Heat Dissipation Requirements

Simulator Hall 10.0 +/- 10% kW (per FFS)
Simulator Hall with EMM Cabinet 29.0 +/- 10% kW (per FFS)

The simulator hall heat load includes the EMM cabinet, a 3-channel visual projector, the smoke generator and
other flight compartment equipment not cooled by the cockpit air conditioner.

2.3.3.1 Visual Projector Cooling

The simulator hall air conditioning system should be designed to maintain constant ambient temperature
above the simulator area so that there is no significant temperature change in the projector area when the
simulator is either in rest (during visual calibration) or in raised position (at operating level).

The temperature level in the simulator hall should be constant throughout the room. The ambient temperature
at the visual projector height level should not exceed 27C.
2.3.4 Simulator Hall Door Openings
Provisions shall be required to transport the simulator to its simulator hall site. Consideration should be given
to transportation, installation and/or removal of the simulator, as well as access to bring in any mobile
equipment for the simulator installation and maintenance. The recommended minimum door openings are:
Table 2-3 Simulator Hall Access Door Opening

Width Opening Height

Exterior Access Opening (Minimum) 20.0 ft (6.0 m) 22.0 ft (6.6 m)
Maintenance Access Door (Actual) 8.2 ft (2.5 m) 9.8 ft (3.0 m)

2.3.5 Overhead Crane

A 2-axis overhead crane is recommended in the simulator hall. The Crane hook, when in raised position
should be minimum 25 feet (7.6 m) for a 42 stroke motion system and 27 feet (8.0 m) for a 60 stroke
motion system, off the simulator hall floor level. The crane should be parked in a location where it will not
interfere with the motion envelope, and it is recommended to interlock the crane with the motion control
cabinet.

The recommend overhead crane capacity is 4000 lbs (or 1800 kg). This would be required to remove the
visual bowl and back projection screen assembly. If the crane is used for initial installation then the crane
capacity should be 6000 lbs (2700 kg).

2.5 Motion System (M1)

2.5.1 Reinforced Concrete Pad Requirements

The dimensions of the motion base reinforced concrete pad are shown on the Simulator Installation drawing.

The motion system must be installed on a specially prepared concrete pad fully dried, including dry paint. The
motion system footprint and the concrete pad dimensions are shown in the Simulator Installation drawing.
The concrete compressive strength shall be 4350 psi (30 Mpa). The location of the concrete pad in the FFS
Simulator Hall shall be positioned in relation to the motion centroid and at a specific distance from the crew
access interface at the mezzanine.

The top of the concrete pad shall be level within 0.08 (2 mm) within the area of each motion base pad and
within 5 mm between any two base pads. The concrete pad top surface should be at the same level as the
simulator hall floor. The floor finish should be painted with a non-slip type and oil resistant paint.

The concrete pad shall be capable of safely supporting the maximum dynamic loads. It should be isolated
from the rest of the building to prevent transmission of vibrations from the motion system to the building by
means of an approximately 1 (25.4 mm) wide gap between the concrete pad and the simulator hall floor slab.
This gap should be filled up with an oil resistant material such as rubber/sealant compound.

2.14.1 Aspirating Smoke Detection System (D4)
The Aspirating Smoke Detection System unit described in section 2.14 shall be wall mounted in the computer
room, 4 feet (1.2m) above the computer floor level, on a CAE supplied mounting bracket. The Building
Facility shall provide a wooden plate (W= 560 mm, H= 1400 mm) as a wall reinforcement in order to fix the
CAE supplied mounting bracket. The total weight of the plate including the equipment will be around 45 Kg
(100lb).

Refer to Table 3-1 for electrical power requirements.

2.15 Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) If Option Selected

A UPS can be supplied within the S1 cabinet in order to provide as a minimum, battery back-up power to the
computers and peripherals and the visual cabinet of the FFS in the case of a building electrical power failure.
The unit shall be provided with an output signal capable of communicating a building electrical power failure
to the host thus enabling an automatic and orderly shutdown. Training will not continue.

The following additional options can be priced upon request depending on customer requirements. They may
have schedule impact.

A 60kVA UPS can also be provided additionally and will be capable of powering the entire simulator
complex except the motion system and will provide enough time for the operators to shut down the system in
case of a power failure.

The unit shall be free standing to be installed in the computer room close to the S1 cabinet. The unit is to be
powered from a Building Facility supplied AC power source. The electrical connection to the UPS shall be
Building Facility supplied. The UPS shall be cooled by the Building Facility .The heat rejected from the UPS
shall be dissipated into the room ambient and shall be taken into consideration by the building architects when
designing the cooling system.

The weight of the UPS and battery cabinets could damage the computer room floor, therefore a special steel
frame or platform should be provided as part of the raised floor to mount the cabinets
Table 2-14 UPS General Specifications (per FFS)

Mounting: Floor mount

Input 380 Volts +15%, -15%, 50/60Hz, capacity 60 kVA minimum
Output 380Y/220 Volts +/-3%, 50/60Hz, 10 minutes backup minimum

If the customer would like to continue the training, then the UPS capacity shall be increased in order to
support the EMM cabinets load and the in-rush current produced by the EMM system during certain
maneuvers. CAE has developed a special product that could handle the load of the entire simulator complex
(including EMM) and can be offered to the customers as well. For this option, a separate room with solid
concrete floor (30 kPa minimum loading capacity) will be required to install the UPS and the batteries
cabinets.

With this scenario, a diesel generator should be installed by the Building Facility to back-up the full Building
Facility and shall be able to restore the power within 1-2 minutes after the power failure. If the generator fails
for any technical reason, the simulator equipment will have to shut down.

3.3 Equipment Grounding

The Building Facility shall provide a permanent and continuous conductive path to the earth. The grounding
system shall have sufficient capacity to carry any fault current liable to be imposed on it. It shall also have a
low impedance to limit the voltage rise above ground and to facilitate the operation of the protective devices
in the circuit. The Building Facility shall also ensure that all equipment is effectively connected to the
Building Facility ground bus. Refer to the Simulator Installation Drawing.

The Building Facility shall ensure that the service entrance ground is a quality, stable connection to the earth
of as low impedance as possible as per NEC 250-23 or local electrical code equivalent (recommended 1 ohm
or less).

The Building Facility shall provide an insulated ground conductor to be run in each feeder conduit. The
conductor shall be parity-sized with the power conductors.

To facilitate the grounding of the P1 cabinet the customer shall provide within 2 meters of the P1 a Building
Facility ground plate. The P1 cabinet grounding conductor will be supplied by CAE and will connect to the
ground plate. The conductor dimension is 70 mm (2/0) and is colour-coded green/yellow.

The EMM cabinet Transformer T1 shall be effectively grounded to the Building Facility via a dedicated
ground bus. The neutral point of the Y side shall be connected directly to that ground bus. The ground bubar
shall be connected to a dedicated earth rod (part of the main building ground loop) and shall be installed near
the EMM cabinet. The grounding conductor from the ground busbar to the earth rod shall be 70 mm (2/0)
minimum and shall be colour-coded green/yellow. The earth resistance at the EMM transformer shall be less
than 1 ohm.

The air conditioner, the Aspirating Smoke Detection System, and the motion cabinet shall be effectively
grounded to the Building Facility ground bus via the ground wire contained in the associated ac power cable.

3.4 Lightning Protection

The Building Facility shall ensure that lightning protection for the Building Facility is provided at the service
entrance to minimize damage due to lightning. It is highly recommended to install a lightning protection in
the Building Facility. The lightning system ground pit and the main ground should be connected together to
create the same potential.

If the area where the Building Facility is located is subject to high lightning strikes, CAE recommends the
installation of a Transient Voltage Surge Suppression (TVSS) system at the main electrical entrance and also
at the distribution panel that feeds the simulator equipment. The TVSS system shall be compliant with
EN61000-4-5.

3.5 Power Quality

The electrical equipment is designed to operate satisfactorily with reasonable disturbances and voltage
tolerances to the AC power.

The supply voltage tolerance is nominal 5%, and the frequency tolerance is nominal 2%.

To determine if Building Facility supplied power conditioning is necessary, the following measurements shall
be made over a period of several days (the results to be sent to CAE for analysis), preferably when the area of
interest and any near-by areas have their full complement of electrical equipment installed and operating:

Main input voltage variations, sags and surges (all phases and neutral).
Frequency variations.
Transients magnitude exceeding 1.5 times the nominal voltage.
Transients duration exceeding power cycle.
Number and duration of power outages.

Voltage variations and transients can be corrected using static or dynamic type power conditioners. Power
aberrations exceeding power cycle require dynamic type conditioners or battery backed Uninterruptible
Power Supply (UPS) systems.

Flywheel type motor-generators can provide power ride through protection up to 2 seconds; for longer periods
a rectifier/battery charger/inverter type device (UPS) is required.

4. Safety

4.1 Illumination
The general light level of recommendation is 500 lux measured at the task objective or 3 ft (1 m) above the
floor or in accordance with the local codes or more depending on customer requirements. The light fittings in
the simulator hall shall be controlled to provide partial or full lighting of the total area.

4.2 Emergency lights

The CAE FFS is equipped with an emergency lighting system including batteries that offer a back-up time for
at least 60 minutes. In case of a power failure, these lights will stay illuminated to allow the crew to find their
way out of the cabin.

In addition, Building Facility shall provide emergency lights conforming to local regulations throughout the
Building Facility areas and crew access so as to light these areas adequately when required during a power
failure.

4.3 Building Facility Fire Detection/Suppression

A building fire detection/suppression system in accordance with user requirements and the fire protection codes
of the authority having jurisdiction is recommended for protection of the simulator equipment, in both the
computer room and the simulator hall of the Building Facility. The provision, installation and operation of this
system is the customers responsibility.

It is recommended that all master switches be equipped with remote trip capability to enable connection to the
building fire detection control panel.

4.4 Laser Fence (Applicable when CE compliance is required)

To comply with the local safety requirements, CAE shall supply and install a laser fence around the simulator.
This fence will be interlocked with the motion cabinet, which will disable the motion system if someone
inadvertently intrudes into the simulator envelope when the motion system is ON.

4.5 Cleanliness and dust control

All the rooms where the simulator equipment will be installed shall be clean and free from dust. The Facility
Building shall ensure that all doors leading to outside are properly sealed and proper filtration systems are
also installed on the air conditioning units feeding these rooms. The facility cleaning personnel shall also be
responsible to remove any form of dust accumulation on the floors, walls, ceilings and also on the simulator
equipment and cabinets. Operating the simulator in a dusty and unclean environment may result in serious
damages to some components.

4.6 Electromagnetic Interference

The Building Facility in which the simulation equipment will be located shall provide the necessary
susceptibility shielding from external sources of E-field (and plane wave) electromagnetic radiation such that
the field intensity measured at the equipment location, 3 ft (1 m) from the exterior of the cabinets is below the
minimum indicated below:

FREQUENCY RANGE E- FIELD (volts/metre)

14 kHz to 10 GHz 1
Above 10 GHz 5

4.7 Safety Hazards

Local Safety Regulations must be considered for the design of the Building Facility and access to equipment
that may pose safety hazard on injury to personnel.

As part of the CE certification route, CAE requires compliancy with the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC and
the laser fence is but one solution that allows us to mitigate the crush hazard present by the FFS motion
system (another solution would be to have all simulator bay access doors interlocked). Therefore, CAE will
supply & install a laser fence to meet CE compliancy requirements in those jurisdictions where CE
compliance is required. This fence will be interlocked with the motion cabinet, which will disable the motion
system if someone inadvertently intrudes into the simulator envelope when the motion system is ON. A
perimeter fence is recommended in all installations.

The European Community norms also require warning and restriction signs on the doors or equipment to
areas that may be hazardous to unauthorized personnel. These areas include -but they are not limited -Power
Cabinets, power distribution panels.

4.8 Equipment Noise

The acoustical requirements within the Building Facility will dictate the means to control noise levels within
acceptable limits or use protective headgear. Any soundproofing deemed necessary will be the customer
Building Facility responsibility. The equipment noise levels must be considered for this purpose.
4.8.1 Simulator Hall

The noise generated by the simulator equipment, i.e. motion and air conditioner is less than 75 dBA. No
soundproofing is required for these elements. The simulator hall walls should soundproofed from external
noises to keep noise level in the room below 75 dBA.
