2. BACKGROUND/SITUATION ANALYSIS

MYCommunity Project is an extensive, educational, interactive and impactful

project that focused on a project based learning. This project incorporates

entrepreneurship, English language personal development, society awareness,

and useful life skill for the pupils. It should be able to identify real society issues

and work on solutions which centered on the community itself. We will engage

social media as a positive mean to promote and create awareness regarding the

project.

English is taught as a second language in all Malaysian primary and secondary

schools. The mastery of English language is essential for pupils to gain access to

information and knowledge written in English as the language is the dominant

language used in Information and Communication Technology (ICT). Pupils need

to master it to enable them to have easy access to information that is available

via the electronic media. The English language curriculum for primary schools

aims to equip pupils with basic language skills to enable them to communicate

effectively in a variety of contexts that is appropriate. The modularity of the

Standard-based English Language Curriculum is of a modular structure. The

curriculum is organized into 5 modules (Listening and Speaking, Reading,

Writing, Grammar and Language Arts).

Hot Tropic aimed to develop English language and communication skills among

the pupils. This project will enable the pupils to communicate their ideas and

opinions confidently and appropriately both in formal and informal situations. The

pupils are also expected to be able to read and comprehend English texts for

information and write a range of texts using appropriate language, style and form

through a variety of media.

This project will adopt the underlying pedagogical principles of the curriculum

such as back to basics, fun and meaningful learning, learner centered teaching

and learning and also the integration of salient new technologies.

3. PROJECT OBJECTIVES

By the end of this project the pupils should be able to;

Use the internet to find information regarding natural disasters.

Read and comprehend English texts regarding natural disasters.

Create texts regarding natural disaster.

Talk about natural disasters in formal and informal situations.

4. DESIRED IMPACT AND OUTCOME OF THE PROJECT

It is hoped that with this project the pupils will be aware of the problems that

we are facing as the consequences of the climate change. With the use of

social media, we also hope that the awareness will be passed on to the

society beyond the classroom. Another impact that we hoped to achieve with

this project is to improve the English language proficiency among the

beneficiaries and to give their self-esteem the boost that they need. The

integration of salient new technologies will also help create the 21 st century

learners who will be equipped with Information and Technology skills, strong

command in English and possess civic mind.

5. SUSTAINABILITY

After the project implementation ends, HOT TROPIC can continue by itself

with other hot issues deemed necessary and relevant to the society. This will

make the project sustainable in the long term.
