Citywide Federations Issue Statement on Civic Solidarity

In Support of Mayor, Council on D.C.s Right to Self-governance
Washington, D.C., February 10, 2017: The presidents of D.C.s two citywide
federations of neighborhood associations today released a joint statement of opposition to
any congressional interference in D.C.s self-government. The statement specifically
supports Mayor Muriel Bowser and the D.C. Council in their efforts to protect duly
legislated local laws and endorsed all efforts to achieve full self-governance, including
through D.C. statehood as affirmed by 86% of voters on November 8, 2016.

Joint Statement in Support of

Mayor Muriel Bowser and the D.C. Council

We are opposed to Congressional efforts to overturn the duly enacted laws of

the District of Columbia. Residents of the District of Columbia are taxpaying
citizens of the United States. Like residents of other cities across the U.S., we
elect our local Council and Mayor. Unlike other U.S. citizens we are without
voting representation in our U.S. Congress. We support our Mayor and
Council in upholding our laws and in advocating for our right to statehood and
self-governance.
