Dear Parents/ Guardians of Strength & Conditioning Students.

My name is Kevin Westhoff. I am the Head Strength and Conditioning instructor here at
Le Mars Community High School. Your son/daughter has enrolled in the Strength and
Conditioning class for a semester. This class meets as follows: 9-12 graders Monday-
Wednesday and Group A on Friday, 9-12 graders Tuesday-Thursday and group B on
Friday. This is a semester class that will meet part of the requirements for a Physical
Education credit. As part of taking this class, your son/daughter will be placed on an
athletic workout (in-season or off-season) or a non-athletic workout. I will be
monitoring your son/daughters progress throughout the semester by pre-test and
post-test results.
Minimum Requirements for the class: Must have on file:
1. Safety form.
2. Must follow individual program and record workouts as discussed in class. Failure to follow
assigned workout/assigned weights /and recording workout information correctly will
result in loss of all participation points for the day.
3. Must complete Pre- Test and Post-Test in the following areas:
Performance Test (including- vertical jump, Pro agility run, 10- yard dash)
Strength Test (athletes Bench Press, Hang Cleans, and Squats)
(Non-athletes- Bench Press and Squats).
4. Must follow the posted Weight Room Rules as discussed in class.

Dressing Requirements: (5 points daily) Students may not have more than 5 no dress
days in the semester to meet minimum requirements. Students must change into gym
clothes each class, unless informed by the instructor.

1. Athletic Tennis Shoes (that are tied tight), with the bow visible on the top of the shoe. You
will be expected to change from outside shoes to lifting shoes.
2. Socks-Athletic cut and must be visible.
3. Athletic shorts- or athletic sweat pants-this must be worn at waist level, not below.
Length of short should be close to touching the knee. Undergarments may not be visible
any time during class. Students will lose all ten daily points if undergarments are showing at
any time .
4. T-shirts- must be an athletic shirt. LCHS is the only high school shirt that may be worn.
Shirts promoting any other high schools will not be allowed. College and Professional teams
are acceptable. No cut off or tank tops and it must cover you when hands are raised above
your head. Shirts must have sleeves.
5. No jewelry (watches, necklaces/ chains, hoop/dangling earrings, bands)/ No Gum or
candy. Long hair must be kept out of the eyes and face by use of a headband, or a tie of
some sort for both males and females.
Clothing worn during the school day and school athletic uniforms are not allowed. Failure
to dress will result in loss of points (this may be made up).You will be expected to participate in
class even when you have not changed.

Excused absences: All excuses from parents or physicians must be presented to the school nurse.
Students who are excused from strength training must present a pink pass, issued by the school
nurse, to the instructor. THIS MUST BE DONE BEFORE SCHOOL-NOT DURING CLASS OR
AFTER THE CLASS. This must be done immediately after knowing about the injury or
illness. Any student, who is excused for a time exceeding one week must present a statement
issued by a physician indicating the length of time the student should be excused from the physical
education activity. You will also need a release from the physician returning you to active
participation. Medical excuses from a doctor for less than two weeks (4/5 class periods) must be
made up. Over 2 weeks do not need to be made up with the instructors consent.
MAKING UP CLASSES: Everyone has the opportunity to make up any class they have missed
during the quarter. This must be done within a two week time period. Students may make up
a class from studyhall during the period they normally have Strength & Conditioning class (ex. 1 st
period TRB, would make up on 1st period MWA) or after school opposite day of their scheduled PE
day. Students may not make up classes on early dismissal days. Excused absences may be
made up for full credit. No dresses may be made up for partial credit; this is treated like late work.
Students who have no study hall may be assigned a written assignment, or allowed to make up
class after school.
Tardy Policy-5 points will be deducted for each tardy. When a student accrues his/her 4 th tardy,
handbook policy will take place.5 th offense- staff assigned detention, 6th offense-staff assigned
detention with conference with student phone call to parents. 7 th offense-office assigned detention
2 hours. Subsequent offenses-tardy is no longer accepted-student will not be admitted to class and
placed in studyhall for that class period. Administration/parent meeting scheduled to discuss future
consequences.

Students will have a running, cumulative grade during the semester. Mid-term, 3rd Qtr,
Mid-term, 4th Qtr=Final Grade.

Grading will be based on 10 points possible each day.

5-participation-sitting or lying around with no exercise movement involved will result in loss of
participation points
Assignments and Tests will be based on the point value of the assignment.

Cell phones will not be tolerated in the locker room- They will be taken from you.
Reason-ability to take pictures (privacy issues).

Every day counts towards the students final grade. Students who choose to not follow the
program assigned to them or who fail to follow class rules will be set down and forfeits
their points for the day.

94.4% - 92.5% A-
92.4% - 90.5% B+
90.4% - 86.5% B
86.4% - 84.5% B-
84.4% - 82.5% C+
82.4% - 76.5% C
76.4% - 74.5% C-
74.4% - 72.5% D+
72.4% - 66.5% D
66.4% - 64.5% D-
64.4% - 0.00% F

Any student who has been injured during strength and conditioning class must report the
injury to the instructor. This must be done in order to provide medical attention and to fill out an
accident report.
