TheRubik'scubeisactuallya26piecespuzzle.Therearethreetypesof
pieces:(seeimage)
Cornerpiece:hasthreedierentcolors ckersonit(thereare8cornerpieces
inthecube)
Edgepiece:hastwodierentcolors ckersonit(thereare12edgepiecesin
thecube)
Centerpiece:hasonecolors ckeronit(6centerpieces,allarea achedtothecore)
ThecoreistheinsideoftheRubik'sCube,whichholdsallthepiecestogetherandisa achedtothe
centerpieceswithrotatableaxes.
Important!Thecenterpiecesarepartofthecoreandsubsequentlycannotmoverela velytoeach
other.Forthatreasontheyarealready"solved".Thesolvingprocessisactuallybringingallcorner
andedgepiecestothe"alreadysolved"centerpieces(meaningthereareonly20piecestosolveout
ofthe26).Forexample,thebluecenterpiecewillalwaysbeoppositetothegreencenterpiece(ona
standardcolorschemecube).Itdoesn'tma erhowhardyouwilltryscramblingthecube,itwilljust
staythatway.

SolvingtheRubik'scubeismadepiecebypiece,justlikeanyotherpuzzle.Thereforethesolu onis
dividedintostepseachofwhichsolvesnumberofpieceswithoutdestroyingtheonescompletedon
previoussteps.Let'sstart!
Step1:Solvingtheedgepiecesofthetoplayer
Inthisstepwehavefourpiecestosolve.Firstchooseacolortobeginwith.Ichosewhiteinthis
guide.Forthis me,choosethewhiteaswell,sotheimagesalongthesolu onwillberelevantto
yoursolvingprocess.Inaddi on,itisbesttostartwiththewhite/yellowcolorsastheyarethe
easiestcolorsforquickrecogni onwhichisimportantforspeedsolving.
Sincethecenterpiecescannotbemovedrela velytoeach
otherit'simportanttosolvetheedgepiecescorrectlyinrela ontoeachother.Forexample,when
solvingthewhiteinourcasethegreencenterpieceistothele oftheredcenterpiece,therefore
thegreenwhiteedgepieceshouldtobesolvedtothele oftheredwhiteedgepiece(seeimage).
Remember!Bringthewhiteedgepiecestothewhitecenter,andnotthewhitecentertotheedge
pieces.
Thefollowingexamplescoverallpossiblecasesforthisstep:

Step2:Solvingthecornerpiecesofthetoplayer
Inthisstepwe'llsolvethefourcornerpiecesofthetoplayer.
Paya en on!Thecornerpiecehastomatchnotonlythe
whitecolorontop,butalsothecolorstothele andright(seecorrect/wrongimages).
Thefollowingexamplescoverallpossiblecasesforthisstep:
Repeatthatfortheotherthreecorners.
Solvingacornerthatitswhites ckerisinoppositetotheupperface(thethirdcaseabove),isdone
intwosteps.Therstisorien ngthecornersothewhites ckerwillshowononeofthesidefaces
(donebyR'D2RD),thenSolvingusingthesecondcasesolu on(R'D'R).
Ifawhitecornerpieceislocatedonthetoplayerbutinthewrongplace(seewrongimageabove)or
incorrectlyorientedinitsplace,justinsertanonwhitecornerthere,andbythatthewhitecorner
piecewillgobacktothebo omlayer.Thensolveitcorrectly.
Step3:Solvingtheedgepiecesofthemiddlelayer
Inthisstepwe'llsolvethefouredgepiecesofthemiddlelayer,andbythatwe'llactuallycomplete
thersttwolayers(a.k.aF2L).
Flipthecubeupsidedownsothesolvedlayerwillbeonthebo om.Chooseanedge
piecetobeginwithwhichiscurrentlyonthetoplayer,andlocateitabovethe
correctcenterpiecetoformanupsidedownTshape(seeimage).
Inordertoinserttheedgepieceintoitsposi onwe'lluseoneofthefollowingalgs:

Inacasethatanedgepieceisinitscorrectposi onbutincorrectlyoriented(see
image),insertawrongedgepiecetothisposi on,andasaresultthewantededge
piecewillgobackintothetoplayer.Thensolveitcorrectlyusingthesuitable
algorithm.
Step4:Orien ngthelastlayeredgepieces
Inthisstep,fortherst mewewon'tcompletelysolvethepiecesbutonlyorientthemcorrectly.In
otherwordsourstepgoalistoformacrossshapeontheupperfaceofthecube.Theedgepiecesdo
notneedtotthecolorsonthesides.
Thereareonlyfourpossibleorienta onstates:

Step5:Permu ngthelastlayercorners
Inthisstepourgoalistopermutethefourlastlayercornerpieces.
Paya en on!Ourgoalisonlytoposi onthecornersintheircorrectplace;wedon'thavetoorient
themcorrectly.Forexample,takealookattheimagetotheright;theyellowgreenredcornerpiece
iswellpermuted.
Inthisstepthereareonly2dierentpossibleunsolvedstates:
Whentwowellpermutedcornersareadjacenttoeachother.
Whentwowellpermutedcornersarediagonaltoeachother.
Ifyoucan'tnd2wellpermutedcorners,turntheupperface(U)un lthey'llshow
up.Theymustbethere.
Inordertocompletethisstepwe'llusethefollowingalgorithm:(Keepreadingbeforeexecu ng)

Thisalgorithmrotates3cornerpiecescounterclockwise,andleavesthefourthcorneruntouched.
Ifyouhave2adjacentwellpermutedcornersturntheupperfaceonceclockwise(U).Thatmovewill
reposi onthecornersintoasitua onwhichonlyonewellpermutedcornerwillremainwhilethe
otherthreecornersneededtoberotatedcounterclockwise.Nowjustexecutethealgorithmabove,
andbythissingleexecu onyouactuallycompletedthisstep(remembertoexecutethisalgorithm
fromthecorrectanglewhenthewellpermutedcornerisonthebackright.seealgorithmimage

Ifyouhave2diagonalwellpermutedcornersjustexecutethisalgorithmaboveonce(theangle
doesn'tma er),andbythat,yourcubestatewillchangeintoatwoadjacentwellpermutedcorners
state.Thenfollowthetwoadjacentcornersinstruc onsabove.
Step6:Orien ngthelastlayercorners
Inthisstepourgoalistoorientthefourcornerpiecesofthelastlayer,theoneswehavejust
permuted.
Inordertodosowe'llusethefollowingalgorithms:

Thesealgorithmsactuallydothesamething,justinanoppositedirec on.Therstalgorithmorients
threecornersclockwise,whilethesecondorientsthreecornerscounterclockwise.Forthatreason
youcanlearnonlyoneofthemifyouprefer(execu ngonealgtwiceequalstoexecu ngthesecond
once).
Ifyouhaveonlyonewellorientedcorner(likeinthealgimages),thenyouareluckyjustexecutethe
suitablealgonceandnishthisstep.
Ifyouhavetwowellorientedcornersornowellorientedcorners,executeoneofthesealgs
randomlyfromdierentanglesun lyou'llgetonlyoneorientedcorner,thenjustexecutethe
suitablealgonemore metocompletethisstep.
Step7(andlast!):Permu ngthelastlayeredgepieces
Inthisstepourgoalistopermutethelastlayeredgepiecesintotheircorrectposi on,andbythatto
completelysolvetheRubik'scube.
Forthat,we'llusethefollowingalgorithms:

Justlikethepreviousstepalgs,thesealgorithmsactuallydothesamething,justinanopposite
direc on.Therstalgorithmrotatesthreeedgescounterclockwise,whilethesecondrotatesthree
edgesclockwise.Forthatreasonyou'llhavetolearnonlyoneofthemifyouprefer.
Inthisstepthereareonlytwopossiblestates:
