SETTING UP
CONNECTION
To connect the Disk Composer and a MIDI instrument, keep the following points in
mind:

r 1. Make sure the poweris off to both the Disk Composer and the instrument.
I 2. Insert the AC adapter into the DC In tennmal and then plug it into a wall outlet.

3. Using two MIDI cables, connect the

MIDI OUT of the instrument to the

MIDI IN of the Disk Composer.

4. Mter connecting the two, switch on the power of the Disk Composer and the
instrument.

LOCATION
Do not use or leave the Disk Composer in the following conditions:

• In direct or strong sunlight • In a dusty place

• In an very humid or very dry place • In a vibrating place
• In an very hot or very cold place • Close to a magnetic object such as a TV
set or a radio

POWER SUPPLY
Always use the adapter that was designed exclusively for use with the Disk Composer.
Do not plug into an outlet being used by other appliances that require a great deal of
power or that generate noise.

MIDI CABLE
Use any MIDI cable to connect the Disk Composer and the instrument (two are included
with the Disk Composer).

FLOPPY DISK
Use only 3.5" single-sided, double-density (IDD) or double-sided, double-density
disks in the Disk Composer.

Handle the disk carefully:

Insert the disk into the disk drive with the

label facing up, and the metal shutter toward
the Disk Composer. The disk will "dick" into
place. .

To eject the disk, press the eject button,

beneath the disk drive.

Do not open the metal shutter or touch the surface of the disk directly.

Do not use or leave magnetic materials near the disk.

Do not use or leave the disk in the direct sunlight, a hot place, or a dusty place.

• Do not use a warped or damaged disk, which may damage the read/write head, bee
stuck in the disk drive, or cause an error in reading or writing data.

Put the label on in the correct position. Make sure the label is frrmly attached tc
disk before putting the disk into the drive.

• Do not remove the disk from the drive or tum off the Disk: Composer while the
access lamp is lit, or you may damage the data on the disk.

• Save important data onto more than one disk (called "backing up" your data), in c:
a disk becomes damaged.
You can protect the data on your disk:

When the tab is up, data can be written onto

the disk.

When the tab is down, data cannot be written

. MORE ABOUT DISKS AND MEMORY

The Disk Composer relies on its internal memory for recording and playing back songs.

• The internal memory can hold one song at a time, up to a maximum of about 14,000
notes.

The contents of the internal memory are lost when the power to the Disk Composer
is turned OFF.

The disk drive allows you to save song fIles onto floppy disks.

A single disk can hold a maximum of 30 song files.

These song files are NOT lost when the power is turned off.

Once you record a song in the internal memory, you can save it onto a disk.
,)
• A song file that is saved on a disk can be loaded back into internal memory to be
played, or for additional recording.

ABOUT THE SAMPLE DISK
A sample disk is included with the Disk Composer. It contains seyeral song files, t(
which this manual refers when introducing the features of the Disk Composer. To m
these songs as useable as possible for a variety of MIDI instruments, they are arrang
three different levels of complexity:

Song 1: Maple Leaf Rag (Tempo: J = 180) Index "MAPLE"

Song 2: Funeral March Of A Marionette (Tempo: J = 96) Index "MARIO'
Song 3: Bach Minuet In G (Tempo: J = 168) Index "MINUET"
Level 2: Melody on :MIDI channell on Recording Track, accompaniment on chanm
on Merge Track
Song 4: Sailor's Hornpipe (Tempo: J= 126) Index "PIPE"
Song 5: William Tell Overture (Tempo: J= 132) Index "W.TELL"
Level 3: Melody on :MIDI channell, accompaniment on channels 2 and 3
Song 6: .l
Don't Worry, Be Happy (Tempo: = 126) Index "HAPPY"
(Melody [Ch. 1] on Recording Track; Introduction [Ch. 1).
Accompaniment [Ch. 2J. and Bass [Ch. 3) on Merge Track)
Song 7: Got My Mind Set On You (Tempo: J=
144) Index. "ON YOU"
(M:eJody rCh. 1) on Recording Track; Introduction [Ch. 1], .
Accompaniment (Ch. 2], and Bass [Ch. 3] on Merge Track)
Song 8: Man In The Mirror (Tempo: .J = 102) Index "MIRROR"
(Melody [Ch. 1] on Recording Track; Introduction and Accompanim,
[Ch. 2] and Bass [eh. 3] on Merge Track)
If you have a MlDI instrument that can receive on only one channel, set it for channel
You will obtain the best results from the arrangements in Levell.
If you have a MIDI instrument that can receive on several channels, or if you have mo:
than one MIDI instrument, consult the owners manual and MIDI Implementation Ch
of each MIDI instrument to determine how to set them for the channels used by the
arrangements in Level 2 and Level 3.
The melodies of Songs 6, 7, and 8 are printed in this book (pages 47-58), so that you c,
play along with the prerecorded arrangements or try recording the melody for yoursel
When you try to play and record them with your own WDI instruments, set the
transmit channel of your MIDI instrumnents to channel 1 for the best result.
The 8 sample songs on the disk are protected against accidental erasure, so you can do
what you wish to them once they are loaded into the internal memory-you won't alte
the versions that are stored on the disk. You can store the melodies you played onto thi
disk as song number 9-30, together with the accompaniments.
SELECTING SOUNDS
Since :MIDI instruments differ considerably from one another, the arrangements found on
the disk do not activate any specific sounds (in technical terms, the arrangements contain
no program change messages). This means that whatever sounds are active on your
inslrUment(s) for the MIDI channel(s) used in a song, those are the sounds in which the
song will play. So you must select tM sounds you desire before playing the
J
, arrangements. See the owner's manmU(s) of your MIDI instrument(s) for information on
doing so.
:~;:.I·'·.· .:
".:.:
,
i
. DRUM PATTERNS
~, No drum parts have been recorded in the sample arrangements. This is because there is no
\>:12 standard among manufacturers of MIDI instruments for what notes, or even what
,,~ channel. should be used for drum sounds.
'~'
~ But if you have a:MIDI drum machine, or an MIDI keyboard with a built-in rhythm unit,
~. you probably can make the drum patterns built into the MIDI instrument play along
with the songs on the Disk Composer.

To do this, it is necessary to synchronize the Disk Composer and the MIDI instrument.
One must be the "master," the other the "slave!' See the discussion of Clock Select
(page 40) for more information.

Once the two devices are synchronized, the drum patterns should start, stop, and play in
time with the prerecorded music.

This section of the manual contains explanations of the various features and functions of
your Disk Composer. Several of these explanations involve trying things out for
yourself, using the sample data disk that is included with your Disk Composer.

PLAYING
CHAIN PLAY
The Disk Composer has a "chain play" function. in which it plays all of the songs on a
disk in numerical order, one after the other.

1. Make sure the power to the Disk Composer is OFF.

2. Insert the sampJe data disk into the disk drive.

3. Tum the power ON.

The Disk Composer starts the chain play automatically. It plays the songs, one after
another, in numerical order. After it finishes the last song, it starts over with the
ftrst one.

4. ,To stop chain play, press the STOP key. The last song that was loaded into the
internal memory will remain in memory.

NOTE: Undefined files and System Exclusive files (see pages 13 and 60) are skipped
during chain play.

NORMAL PLAY
You can listen to the song in the memory of the Disk Composer, jf one is in memory.
When you listen to a song saved on the disk, the Disk Composer automatically loads the \
song from the disk to memory.

1. Tum on the power switch.
