Experiment 23

ABSTRACT
Endocrine glands are glands of the endocrine system that secrete their products, hormones, chemical substances
produced in the body to regulate the activity of cells or organs directly into the blood rather than through a duct.
The major glands of the endocrine system include the following: Pituitary gland secretes hormones that helps
control: growth, blood pressure, certain functions of the sex gland and metabolism. Thyroid gland is found on the
neck; it secretes thyroid hormones, which influence metabolic rate, protein synthesis and development. Parathyroid
gland is also found in the neck; it produce parathyroid hormone which have the key role in regulating the amount of
calcium in the blood and within the bones. Adrenal gland is found above the kidneys; it produce a variety of
hormones including adrenaline and the steroids aldosterone and cortisol. Pancreas produce several important
hormones which is involved in blood sugar control and metabolism within the body and also in the secretion of
substance which help digestion. Ovaries and testes are reproductive organs which produce hormones that play
important roles in the development of sexual characteristics. Pineal glands primary function is to produce
melatonin. Thymus secretes thymosin which enhance the function of immune system. The purpose of this laboratory
experiment is to examine and observe the different prepared slides on how they are different from each other by its
structure with the help of a microscope. In order to do this, there are six (6) prepared slides that are needed to view
in the microscope under the high power objective lens (400x). The students were able to draw and differentiate the
following endocrine glands. From this data, endocrine glands prove that they are important in maintaining
homeostasis and a tiny amount less or more of its hormones can cause big changes in your body.

Materials and Methods

For this experiment we viewed different specimens of endocrine glands using a compound light
microscope. The following specimens were pituitary gland, thyroid gland, parathyroid gland,
adrenal gland, pancreas and thymus. The slides were positioned on the stage. One at a time, the
specimens were viewed and examined using a high power objective (400x). The following
endocrine glands were seen and identified. It was drawn.

Conclusion
At the end of the experiment, the students were educated about the orientation and guidelines of
the following assessment: Pregnancy test and Ovulation test. The pregnancy test which work by
detecting the presence of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in the urine (qualitatively) and in
the blood (quantitatively), which is a hormone produced by the placenta after implantation of the
embryo into the utering lining. On the other hand, ovulation test is the one who measures the
amount of Luteinizing Hormone (LH) in your bloodstream which is a hormone that promotes
ovulation and progesterone production. All in all this experiment helped the students in
distinguishing the factors that makes the two test different from one another.
