GINGKO BILOBA

Ginkgo biloba or also known as Ginkgo or maiden tree is generally classified in the

Ginkgophyta (Figure 1). It is native to China and a dioecious species, with separate male and

female individuals. Ginkgo shows a long juvenile period, typically not reaching sexual maturity

until 20 to 30 years of age. Its leaf and seed has various uses in traditional medicine and as a

source of food (Figure 2). According to Perry (2010), raw Ginkgo nuts, have long been used in

traditional Chinese medicine to treat a variety of lung-related ailments such as asthma and

bronchitis, as well as for the treatment of kidney and bladder disorders.

NUTRITIONAL VALUE OF GINKGO BILOBA

As for the nutritional value, we examined it through the Ginkgo seed which average weight of

28.4 gram per seed and serve per 100 gram. Macronutrient such as protein, carbohydrates, lipid

and mineral were analyzed. Ginkgo biloba is a good source of nutrients, vitamins and minerals.

The nutritional value for 100 gram and 28.4 gram of the Ginkgo biloba were obtained from the

report paper United States Department of Agriculture showed below (Figure 3)

TABLE 1 Nutritional Value Ginkgo biloba of 100 gram

Based on the report above (Table 1), it clearly showed that the ginkgo seed has the highest

carbohydrates content which is 28.92 % compared to others macronutrient such as protein and fat

(lipid) by a large margin. By taking 100 gram of ginkgo seed, it provides 28.92 % of

carbohydrates.

Table 2 Vitamin content in Ginkgo seed

From the table above (Table 2), Ginkgo biloba has the highest percentage of Vitamin B3 (Niacin)

which is 37.50 % compared to other vitamins. The second highest is also a vitamin B which is

Vitamin B6. We can conclude that the Vitamin B content dominate the other vitamins in the

Ginkgo seed and show that ginkgo seed have a good source of Vitamin B. All B vitamins help

the body convert food (carbohydrates) into fuel (glucose), which the body uses to produce energy.

Ginkgo seeds have highest total content of fatty acid in the form of monounsaturated which is

0.619 gram and it closely to the polyunsaturated which is 0.618 gram. The difference is slightly

by 0.001 gram. Octadenoic acid is the main constitute to the monounsaturated acid amount which

is 0.152 gram contrast to other monounsaturated acid such as hexadecanoic acid and eicosenoic
acid. The lowest content of fatty acid is in the form of saturated contribute about 0.319 gram. The

report above show no percentage of the daily value because the lack of data or cannot be defined

yet. Thus, we can conclude that ginkgo seed has the highest amount of monounsaturated fatty

acid compared to the saturated fatty acid.
