from 9.30am to 12.30pm) for some of the Grad. Cert. in IP Law modules.

The general course structure for all M.Sc. programmes is shown in Table A (page 3). Students
may either take a general course leading to a M.Sc. degree in their chosen discipline or choose
an area of specialization (where available). The areas of specialization are shown in Table B
(page 4).

Registration Students either register as full-time or part-time candidates. However, International candidates
who are not residing or not working in Singapore are only eligible to apply for the full-time
M.Sc. programmes, and if offered admission, they are to be registered as full-time students
only.

All registered full-time students are not permitted to be employed without permission from the
University. Those found doing so may have their candidatures terminated immediately.

No student may concurrently be a candidate for more than one degree or register as a candidate
of the University and of another University or Institution.

Examinations Coursework Requirements

(All M.Sc. courses)
At NUS, minimum standards are set for continuation in a programme of study and graduation.
After each examination, depending on each students academic performance, he/she will be
emplaced in one of the following academic standings:
Passed; or Warning; or
Probation; or Dismissal
In general (except for students who obtained a CAP of < 1.5 during their first semester of study),
students who are not performing within expectations, will be issued with either an academic warning
or an academic probation before he/she is issued with a letter of dismissal and denied re-admission.

1. Modular Credits
Each existing M.Sc. module of 39 hours of lecture is to be assigned 4 MCs.

2. Grades and Grade Points

The following grades are adopted for award to individual module in respect of the 1st and 2nd semester
examinations :

Grade A+ A A- B+ B B- C+ C D+ D F (Fail)
Grade Point 5.0 5.0 4.5 4.0 3.5 3.0 2.5 2.0 1.5 1.0 0

CAP for M.Sc. Graduation > 3.0

Total MCs for Graduation > 40

A candidate who is absent in the examination of a module without a valid reason acceptable to the
Board of Examiners will be given Grade F (Fail) for the module which he/she is absent in.
Module(s) with grade F do not earn any MC (i.e. MC = 0)

4
3. Academic probation, warning, dismissal and graduation

(a) For continuation of candidature (student must demonstrate satisfactory progress

during his/her candidature) i.e:
(i) academic probation/warnings:
- subject to subparagraph 3(a)(ii), probation/warning is issued to
students if CAP <3.0; &
(ii) dismissal and refuse re-admission to students if:
- in the 1st semester of study, CAP < 1.5; or
- for 2 consecutive semesters of study, CAP < 2.5 ; or
- for 3 consecutive semesters of study, CAP < 3.0 ; or
- fail to meet the minimum proficiency grade for a repeated core/foundation
module.

In addition to the above, students in M.Sc. (IP Mgt) programme must obtain a pass
with a minimum average mark of 55% in the Graduate Certificate in IP Law in order
to proceed to Part 2 of the M.Sc. (IP Mgt) programme.

The above rules on academic probation/warning and dismissal shall also apply to a
candidate on an exchange programme, and/or a candidate on leave of absence of one
semester or longer. If a candidate is given an academic probation/warning prior to
his/her leave, the probation/warning prior to the leave shall count towards dismissal.

A module can only be repeated once regardless of whether this is for a previously
failed module or for a core module for which the student failed to secure the
expected minimum proficiency grade. Students who fail an elective module twice,
subject to the conditions under 3 (a) (ii) may be allowed to take another module
instead. However, students who did not secure the minimum proficiency grade for a
repeated core module will be dismissed from the programme.

The number of modules that a student can repeat for the entire M.Sc. candidature is
three (equivalent to 12 MCs).

Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory modules shall be excluded in determining the academic

probation/warning of a student.

Students must complete their requirements for their degrees within their maximum
period of candidatures, failing which they will have their candidatures terminated.
(b) All M.Sc. programmes with the exception of M.Sc.(IP Mgt) :-

For graduation, a student:

(i) must obtain a minimum CAP of 3.0 (B-) for the modules equivalent to 40 MCs
(inclusive of foundation/core modules, where required); &
(ii) must obtain at least 40 MCs (inclusive of foundation/core modules, where
required) of which at least 30 MCs must be at graduate level within the subject
or in related disciplines. The remaining credits may be from graduate level and
or Level 4000 modules in the same or other disciplines subject to the approval
of the Department.
within the maximum candidature of 2 years and 4 years for full-time and part-time
students respectively.

Student may be allowed to take more than 10 modules or its equivalent of 40 MCs
only if at the point of request to read more modules, the student has less than 40
MCs or his/her CAP is < 3.0.

In general, all students are expected to graduate after obtaining 40 MCs and who
have already achieved a CAP of 3.0.

M.Sc. (IP Mgt) programme :-

For graduation, a student must :
(i) complete a minimum of 195 lecture hours for the GCIP; &
(ii) obtain a GCIP (Pass) with a minimum average mark of 55%; &
(iii) achieve a minimum CAP of 3.0 (B-) for the M.Sc. (MOT) modules equivalent
to 20 MCs. Of the 20 MCs required, at least 16 MCs must be at a graduate
level within the subject or in related disciplines, and the remaining credits
may be from other levels in the same or other disciplines subject to the
approval of the Programme Manager.
within the maximum candidature of 2 years and 4 years for full-time and part-time
students respectively (inclusive of both Part 1 GCIP and Part 2 MOT).

5
Notes :
CAP - Cumulative Average Point Formulae for CAP = Sum (GP x MC)
MC - Modular Credits Sum (MC)
GP - Grade Points

All letter grades (including Grade F) are computed in the CAP computation for M.Sc. students who have
yet to accumulate 40 MCs. Students who have achieved more than 40 MCs, the CAP is computed on the
best modules equivalent to 40 MCs (inclusive of foundation/core modules, where required).

The English Language requirement, where relevant, is in addition to the coursework requirements.
Graduate English courses are excluded from the CAP computation.
Only offered once a year in August

Documentary All required supporting documents should be attached to the completed application in hardcopy
Evidence for submission. Certificates submitted in a language other than English must be accompanied by
a translated and certified copy. All supporting documents (original & photocopies) submitted by
candidates will not be returned. Further documentary evidence may be requested at a later date.

Fees Session 2015/2016

While you are pursuing your studies in NUS, you are liable to pay fees. The amount payable may depend on your
nationality as well as whether you have previously enjoyed a Singapore government subsidy or sponsorship by a
government agency.

In essence, students either pay fees as set out in Tables 1 and 4 or Tables 2 and 4, while the M.Sc.(IP Mgt) students pay
fees set out in Tables 3 and 4.

MASTER OF SCIENCE (ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING)

Overview

The Master of Science in Environmental Engineering programme is targeted at graduates who are either working, or
considering a career, in environmental engineering, and wish to be part of the global effort to incorporate environmental
considerations in all human activities. The curriculum is sufficiently flexible to accommodate students from science and
technology backgrounds as well as provide practicing engineers an opportunity to enhance their technical competence.
This programme is also suitable for graduates who wish to build on their prior educational background and professional
experience in the field of environmental science and technology, and to acquire new skills for solving advanced
environmental engineering problems, thus enabling them to contribute in greater measure to Singapores push to develop
its environmental technology industry. The programme will prepare students to contribute to the environmental protection
efforts spearheaded by the countries in the region. In addition, this broad-based educational programme would be of
relevant interest to professionals in the governments regulatory and statutory bodies, as well as in institutes of higher
learning.

The Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Environmental Engineering is structured around lectures, continual assessments and end-
of-semester examinations. Candidates may opt for part time or full-time study.

Part-time students will normally read 2 graduate modules equivalent to 8 MCs per semester and attend lectures two
evenings per week. Full-time students will normally read 3-4 graduate modules equivalent to 12-16 MCs per semester and
attend lectures three-four evenings per week.

A candidate needs to complete a program of study consisting of 1 core module and at least 9 elective or other approved
modules.

Some modules may have prerequisites. It is the candidates responsibility to ensure that the prerequisites requirements, if
any, are met.

Candidates should also note that the final composition of graduate modules proposed by themselves is subject to approval
by Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Candidates may, as a part of the 10-module requirement for the

GUIDE FOR INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS

IMMIGRATION MATTERS

International students who are successful in gaining admission to their respective full-time M.Sc. programmes must note
that their offer of admission is conditional upon the successful application of their Students Pass.

The Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) has implemented a web-based system for Students Pass application
called the Students Pass Online Application & Registration (SOLAR).

When full-time International students have been offered admission to our programmes, the University will proceed with
the Students Pass application via SOLAR and also write to inform candidates how to complete the application process
at their end. After candidates complete the application through SOLAR, ICA will process the application.

For candidates from countries which require a visa to enter Singapore (details can be found at
http://www.ica.gov.sg/page.aspx?pageid=96&secid=94), the University will be applying for the visa cum Students Pass
via SOLAR. If the Students Pass application is approved, the In-Principle Approval (IPA) letter, which also serves as a
single-journey entry visa, will be sent to the relevant candidates. This letter and the valid passport must be presented to the
Duty Officer at the immigration checkpoint upon arrival in Singapore.

For candidates from a non-visa required country (e.g. Malaysia, Indonesia, etc.), candidates can collect the approval letter
at the point of registration with the University.

On your arrival in Singapore, you will be given a Social Visit Pass for a minimum of 2 weeks at the airport or point of
entry. You may be asked to show your Letter of Offer of Admission. After registering as a student and obtaining your
student registration card, you must apply for a Students Pass at least 4 working days before the expiry of your Social Visit
Pass at one of the following centres :

1. Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) booth Available before start of semester (dates to be
National University of Singapore confirmed).
