Great American Fanfare
by Richard Byrd
Great American Fanfare was commissioned by the 2012 Great American Brass Band Festival to celebrate and salute one of Americas
most renowned performers, Vincent DiMartino, on the occasion of his retirement at Centre College. e work is written for ten
trumpets that can be arranged as two antiphonal trumpet choirs. is majestic fanfare is easily suited for multiple doubling of parts to
form massed trumpet forces, as evidenced during the premiere performance where numerous former DiMartino students from all over
the country participated in this tribute.
e musical material for this fanfare was adapted from an earlier work by the
composer, entitled Celebration Fanfare, written for the 2010 Alltech FEI World
Equestrian Games, a world championship event involving equestrians from over
sixty countries, which was held in Lexington, Kentuckythe rst time in history
that this prestigious international event occurred outside of Europe.
Great American Fanfare features a prominent spirited theme juxtaposed with an
enchanting lyrical theme, and mixed meter transitions interspersed throughout.
is energetic composition is fun to perform and enjoyable to hear, and is ideal for
trumpet competitions, conference preludes, and engaging concert programs.
