Card No Fam-001 Version 06 2016-03-01 Page 1 of 5

Familiarization and Training Process

I. Purpose of the document

Seafarers who are newly assigned to a ship must take full advantage of every opportunity provided to become
familiar with the shipboard equipment, operating procedures and other arrangements needed for the proper
performance of their duties.

II. Scope

All Company Vessels.

III. Definitions and abbreviations

-Period of supervision: Sufficient time for hand over and understanding of the SSE duties.
-SOLAS Training Manual: include information concerning working and operation of the lifesaving appliances
and firefighting equipment.
-Seafarers: Officers, crew members and cadets
-Head of Department: Chief Engineer or Chief Officer
-Supervisor: Officer or crew member in charge of new comer supervision on job duties by delegation of the
Chief Engineer or Chief Officer

IV. Introduction to Familiarization Measures

WHO?

The Master

-Has authority to provide for a suitable period of supervision when there is any doubt that a newly employed
seafarer is not familiar with the shipboard equipment, operating procedures and other arrangements needed for
the proper performance of his or her duties.
-Defines with Heads of Department a dedicated supervisor in charge of the crew member formation.

Chief Officer

-As Safety Officer, he must ensure that SSE duties and tasks are known and applied.
-Can delegate his duties and tasks to other officers.
-Is responsible for the on board periodic update of SOLAS Training Manuals, which is to be held every 6 months.
Every amendment on the Manual is mentioned on the amendment sheet, with date and correctors name and
signature.

Seafarers

-Seafarers who do not promptly attain the level of familiarization required for performing their SSE duties have
the obligation to bring this fact to the attention of their supervisor, and to identify each equipment or procedure
with which they are not familiar.
-At the beginning of each embarkation/contract, each seafarer must be familiarized and trained with the ships
working environment. A safety tour should be organized accordingly.

WHAT?

The following cards are given (see Appendix 1):

Boarding familiarization questionnaire (See Card No Fam-002).

The off signer must advise and explain to his substitute all the content of this card about safety/security and
environmental prevention. He will be allowed to sign-off by the master only when the substitute is able to do
every item exposed on this card. This card must be filled up by the on signer before the ship leaves the port,
corrected and recorded. Follow-up done by Chief Officer.

briefing on SSEMS Card No Fam-002.

Training and instructions questionnaire before performing duties (See Cards No Fam-004, No
Fam-005, No Fam-006, No Fam-007a, No Fam-007b, No Fam-008)

These questionnaires must be completed before taking over the first watch (or first mooring/unmooring
operation) for Bridge team seafarers and within 72h after joining the vessel for others seafarers. Follow-up done
by Chief Officer for Cards No Fam-004, No Fam-006, No Fam-008, No Fam-008 and Chief Engineer for others.

SSE training and instructions questionnaire. (See Card No Fam-003)

This form must be completed within the 15 days after joining the vessel. Followed up and recorded by Chief

Individual Familiarization Manual (available in each cabin), specific to the function occupied by the
crew member.

Every Individual Familiarization Manual is set up with at least the following documents:

-ISM Code Presentation (SSEMS Card No Fam-001A)

-ISPS Code Presentation (SSEMS Card No Fam-001B)
-Muster Lists for: Fire / Abandon / Pollution Prevention (SOPEP) / Rescue boat (Man over board) / Life rafts /

SOLAS Training Manual must be read within 15 days.

The Manuals must be available to all crew members, and copies are provided in each crew mess room and
recreation room. They are managed on board.

Firstly designed for the crew training, it should also be used as an information compilation when emergency
situations occur. It will emphasize the training instructions.

The SOLAS Training Manual is divided in 3 important subdivisions: Lifesaving appliances, Firefighting
equipment and Enclosed space (See Appendix 2).

The SOLAS Training Manual must be ship specific, describing the equipment and systems in use onboard the
vessel. Where possible photographs and pictorial illustrations should be used. The SOLAS Training Manual
should be written in the working language of the vessel, and in English if required by Flag regulations.
