Course Title: Fashion Design


Session Title: Safety in the Sewing Lab
Duration: 90 min
Preparation
Instructional Aids:

Handouts parts of a machine, how to thread the machine

Materials Needed:
1- Spool of top-pull thread 1- Fabric shears
1- Industrial machine bobbin 1- Thread snips
1- Industrial machine needle Copy of handouts
2- Yards of cotton muslin

Equipment Needed:
Industrial Sewing Machine, industrial steam iron and board

Learner

Prior to this lesson ask the learner to examine the construction of their favorite piece of
clothing and focus there attention on the stitches and seam lines. Ask them to describe in
there own words how these garments are put together.
Introduction

Introduction (LSI Quadrant I):


Not everyone understands the hazarders that can occur when using sewing equipment.
The items in this room are either run by high power motors that force sharp needles up
and down, get hot enough to burn or have the ability to cause bodily harm. Through a
proper understanding of the safety guideline you will be able to provide a safe work
environment for you and your fellow students to work in.

Have students work in stations at the iron and sewing machines to review how to thread
machine and iron

Have students work independently thread a machine

Summary

Review (LSI Quadrants I and IV):

Discuss the reason for the having safety guidelines in the sewing lab and the proper usage
of the sewing machines and irons.

Evaluation

Informal Assessment (LSI Quadrant III):


Using sample created independently review the process of threading the machines, sewing
and ironing. Also using a hand out have the students identify the parts of the machine

Formal Assessment (LSI Quadrant III, IV):

Each student will be checked off on the proper threading of the industrial machine and
have to prove it was properly threaded by sewing a line on muslin.

Extension/Enrichment (LSI Quadrant IV):

The students will be given the opportunity to sew other types of lines such as curves circles
and squares.
