sentences can be linked by a
conjunct-synterically and without a
conjunct-asyndehcally. They are also
a semi-composite sentences who
appear as a middle stage between
simple and composite sentences.
They are two types of composite
sentences. The first one is based on
the principle of co-ordination and is
called compound sentence. The
second one is based on the principle
of subornation and is named complex
sentences.
COMPOUND SENTENCES-they are
based on co-ordination. They are not
interchangeable. They first leading
clause cannot change places with the
second clause. Deletic and
pronominalizatoin are the
mechanism which serve to block the
reversibility. Clauses in the
compound sentences are often
connected with conjunct as and or
but.
compound sentences-ex: Peter and
Victor came in or. Jane came in
and sat down. The first sentence is
an example for simple sentence and
second one is an example for
compound sentence. Their surface
structure is similar to an expanded
simple sentence and their deep
structure is more like that of a fully-
fledged compound sentencesis made
possible by the fact that in the
process of combining sentences they
overlap around the same element.
But sometimes the reduced variants
may cause ambiguity.
COMPLEX SENTENCE-Complex
sentence are based on the principle
of subordination. There are two types
of clauses main and dependet. The
minimal complex sentence contains
one main clause and at least one
subordinate clause. The main clause
is very much dependet on the
meaning of the dependet clauses.
The semantic load is-carried by
subordinate clause, when the
subordinate clause fits the object or
subject position. When dependet
clauses occupy or constitvent
position within the main clause, they
are called embedded sentences.
When they occupy a lower-rate
position in another phrase and their
function is to modify meaning within
the boundary of the sentences, they
are called subordinate sentences.
Subordinate clause can also be
divide categorically and functionally.
In the categorical classification we
have nominal adjective and adverb
clauses. The functional classification
is based on the syntactic roles of the
clause and is related to the
categorical one in the same way as
respective phrases which can occupy
them. In the sentence position,
subordinate clauses occupy three
groups: 1-primary or nominal
position, 2-secondary or attributive
position, 3-adverbical position.
Among the primary sentence
position, subordinate clauses can be
subject, predicative or Od clause. Ex:
That John has left for Britain is
absolutely certain.-here the subject
clause performs the thematic
function the sentence. The
predicative clause is also called
complement clause because it
perform a compliment function and
follows a link verb. The object clause
caries communicative load and has
to follow a transitive verb. The
secondary position is divide into two
groups of subordinate clauses
defining and non-defining creative
clauses. The differences between the
two types is only functional. A third
type of secondary-position clause is
the appositional clause is to
entroduce formation which defines
the antecedent. The third type of
sentence is the adverbial adjunct
position. These clauses can be:
a)circumstantial clauses-about time,
place etc.b)expressive clauses
defining matters, purpose etc. The
connectors which provide the link
between main and subordinate
clauses are substitutive pure
coniunctions and bitunctions
conneclor. They are very much
dependet on the category and
function of subordinate clauses. They
are also semi-complex sentences.
They occur because of the existence
of the process of clause reduction.
