Course Description

This is an online course for Allied Health students and will serve as one of four
courses required to complete the program. Since it is a community health issue, all
courses are open to community members wishing to get more information on this
problem. The modules will be a hybrid of both online and face to face instruction.
The course is offered to both male and female students but in separate groups with
instructors of the same gender as students. There will be both synchronous and
asynchronous chats throughout the course along with group tasks and projects to
complete. Topics will include Identifying risk factors, differentiating Type1 and 2
Diabetes, and developing alternative eating and lifestyle changes.

Saudi Arabia has one of the highest percentages of Diabetes in the world, with an
estimated number of 2,065,300 people diagnosed with the disease by 2010, which
is 16.8% of the population (although some studies have shown this percentage to
be higher).

Course Objectives

Identify Diabetes as a Community Health Issue among Women


Compare and Contrast the risk factors in women in urban areas vs. women in
rural areas
Recognize Fact from Fiction
Apply diabetes prevention activities for women in Saudi Arabia

Grading
Attendance:
You must be present at least 80% of the time online in order to successfully
pass the course. Also you are expected to attend at least 2 of the 3 face to
face meetings as well as 1 synchronous chat per week during the 8 week
period.
Homework:
10% of your grade is taken from successful completion of homework. All work
is due by midnight every Sunday. Unless there is a reasonable excuse, no
credit will be given to late submittals.
Projects, presentations, papers and exams will account for 90% of your
final grade
Assessments:
Assessments will be based on surveys, short quizzes and performance tasks.

When in doubt:

Check in as often as needed. Do not wait until the very end of the course to seek
help of any kind. I am here to assist you in any way that I can in order to make
this a successful and enjoyable learning experience for you.
