INSTRUCTIONS
The specific properties of LAFARGE ULTRA MORTAR AND
PLASTER SERIES require special use and work precautions:

Precautions of use
Ultra Mortar and Plaster should be covered prior to use to prevent it from drying out. This can
either be done with a plastic sheet or a damp cloth.
The Ultra Mortar and Plaster storage containers should be kept clean and washed out with
clean water after use.
Ultra Mortar and Plaster does not require the addition of any kind of material on site. In actual
fact if this is done the technical characteristics of the product will be altered and will not
perform as expected.

Working precautions
Protect the completed work from bad weather immediately after it has been completed.
The surface upon which the masonry will be laid must be clean and free of laitance and loose
aggregates.
Clay bricks should be laid and adjusted to their final position while the mortar is still wet.
Temporary support must be provided to support masonry in arches and above openings. Such
supports shall be removed only once the Ultra Mortar has developed enough strength. Generally
the props are spaced at 1.2m centres and are left in place for a period of at least 7 days.
Control the absorption of bricks and blocks, which should not be too dry nor too humid.
The rate of new construction shall be limited so as to eliminate any possibility of joint
deformation, slumping or instability, which may reduce bond strength. Corners and other
advanced work shall be racked back and not raised above the general level of the remaining
masonry work by more than one meter at any one lift. Toothing should be avoided.
All Mortar and Plaster work should be kept damp for a period of 5 days to ensure that it is
properly cured and the full designed strengths are met.
For a full specification on masonry work consult the NHBRC Home building Manual Part 3.
