Instructions for Examiners

LOCATION: a quiet place in the school.

DURATION: about 20 minutes.

PARTICIPANTS: 2 students; an examiner; an interlocutor if possible; an usher.

RECORDING: the examination is to be recorded. The recording is sent to


Anglia Examinations, Chichester College, for moderation.

BEFORE the candidates enter the room, clearly record their full names
and numbers.

MATERIALS NEEDED: list of topics to be handed out to students one week prior to
exam; sets of cards for priority ordering at least two copies of each card, A, B, C
and D.

Task 1: 24 minutes.

Introductory warm-up: ask each student to introduce him or herself. In follow-


up, include questions on their interests, skills, talents and hopes for the future.

Prompt the students to ask each other questions about their lives, families, hopes
and ambitions.

Task 2: 810 minutes.

Prepared talk and discussion: each student gives a short presentation (2 3


minutes) on a topic from the list. Then students respond to one anothers
presentations for about 3 minutes each.

Task 3: about 8 minutes.

Free discussion and decision-making: priority ordering the students pick one
card containing a list of subjects, the order of importance of which they have to
decide on with their partner by negotiation.

N.B. There are 4 cards in total. Cards A and B are intended for use by slightly
older candidates (21+) while C and D are intended for the younger age group.
However, the examiner has the freedom to select which 2 cards would be most
suitable for the candidates in the exam.

When the card has been chosen, both students are given a copy to work from.
