Lesson Topic: Introduction to Homeostasis


Time Allotted: 70 minutes

Overall & Specific Expectations:

E2. Investigate the mechanisms that maintain homeostasis in living organisms.

E2.1 Use appropriate terminology related to homeostasis.

E2.2 Plan and conduct an investigation to study a feedback system.

Lesson Body:
4 student volunteers will first be selected for the activity.
Students will play a game of Twister for 15 minutes.
Minds-On Activity/ A discussion will take place afterwards:
Discussion 1. What was difficult about playing this game?
(12 minutes) 2. How do you think your body maintained balance in the
game?
Twister 3. What organs or body parts have a role in keeping balance in
your body?

Students will complete a short note that defines homeostasis and

learn of the elements of a feedback loop.
(13 minutes)

Students will be arranged into groups and given a scenario (listed


below) that they will design a feedback loop for. They will research
their topic with Chromebooks and present their scenario in a
manner of their choosing (see Appendix).
Assessment Scenarios:
(40 minutes) 1. Why am I thirsty after exercising?
2. Why am I hyper after eating sugar?
3. Why am I sweating before a big show?
4. Why am I breaking out in zits?
5. Why am I shivering?
6. Why does my skin swell when I break a bone?
Consolidation (5 minutes):

Students will complete an exit card that pertains to what was learned in this lesson (see
appendix).
