Question 9
Consider the engine block of a car made of cast iron (k = 52 W/m C and =
1.7 *105 m2/s). The engine can be considered to be a rectangular block
whose sides are 80 cm, 40 cm, and 40 cm. The engine is at a temperature of
150 C when it is turned off. The engine is then exposed to atmospheric air
at 17 C with a heat transfer coefficient of 6 W/m2 C. Determine -
(a) the center temperature of the top surface whose sides are 80 cm and 40
cm and
(b) the corner temperature after 45 min of cooling.

Answer
Given:
Dimensions of engine =80 cm40 cm40 cm
Engine Temperature=140
Atmospheric Temperature=17

The engine block of a car is allowed to cool in atmospheric air.

Heat conduction in the block is three-dimensional, and thus the
temperature varies in all three directions. The thermal properties
of the block are constant.

The thermal properties of cast iron are:

k =52W /m

=1.7105 m2 / s

This rectangular block can physically be formed by an intersection

of two infinite plane walls of thickness 2L=40cm (call planes A
and B) and an infinite plane wall of thickness 2L=80cm (Call plane
C). We measure x from the center of the block.

a) The Biot number is calculated for each of the plane wall to

k 52 W /m

The constants 1 and A1 corresponding to these Biot numbers are,

1(A,B) = 0.150 and A1(A,B)=1.0038
2(C) = 0.212 and A1(C) = 1.0076

The Fourier numbers are

The center of the top surface of the block(whose sides are 80cm
and 40cm) is at the center of the plane wall with 2L = 80cm, at
the center of the plane wall with 2L=40cm, and at the surface of
the plane wall with 2L = 40cm . The dimensionless temperatures
are:
