II. EPIDEMIOLOGY
Zone of Coagulation:
the point of maximum damage
Irreversible tissue loss due to coagulation
of constituent proteins.
Zone of Stasis:
Characterised by decreased tissue
perfusion
Potential to rescue the tissue in this zone
Problems such as prolonged hypotension,
infection or oedema can convert this area into
one of complete tissue loss
Zone of Hyperaemia:
IV. ETIOLOGY
Burns can be caused by excessive heat or
cold, by chemicals, ultraviolet light
or radiation.
The most common causes of burns
requiring hospital treatment are:
Scalds from hot fluids or steam are
common in the under fives and the elderly.
-Explosions, flash flame or steam, bonfires,
fireworks, barbeques and the use of
flammable liquids such as petrol. Flash
burns tend to be partial-thickness burns, but
can be deeper if the patients clothes ignite.
