Teaching vocabulary:

10-15 encounters with a new word before putting it in your long term memories-
letters, sound, words, chunks, grammatical structure need to spread out and built
up from noticing to recognition to production.
From Passive to production.
There is gradual progression in vocabulary learning. Learners usually start by
noticing before they produce it.
Four stages in new vocabulary acquisition.
1. The learner notices the new word (with help)
2. The learner learns to recognize the word(with help)
3. The learner recognizes on his/her own
4. The learner can both recognize and produce.
1. Stage 1: Noticing the word: visual element

Flash cards
Pictures

2. Stage 2: Recognition

True/false
Categorize the words
Matching
Multiple choice
Drawing the word
Bingo games
Circle the word you hear

3. Stage 3: Production

Dictation
Answering questions
Guessing games
Picture description
Miming.

For your micro teaching here are a few points to consider:

when do you want to hear, read, say and/or write the new word
any helpful visuals
concept-checking
practice activities
production activities
On our part we give feedback to the trainee who taught the words, using these
Feedback questions as a guide:

What in the lesson helped you (understand the words)?

What in the lesson hindered you (understand the words)?
Suggest improvements to the lesson so that the vocabulary learning might
become more effective.
