Strain Energy

When an external force is applied on a body, it gets deformed. The work done to
cause this deformation gets stored within the body as strain energy. When the
external force is removed this stored energy is released and the body returns to
its original length. The strain energy stored in the body is equal to the external
work done by the force on the body. It is a scaler quantity and is always positive.
Resilience
When a body is stressed within the elastic limits the internal energy that gets
stored in it is known as the resilience or strain energy.
Proof Resilience
When a body is stressed upto the elastic limit the maximum strain energy that
gets stored in the body is known as prood resilience
Modulas of resilience
Proof resilience per unit volume.
Modes of loading
Strain energy developed in a body depends on the type of loading. The manner
in which the external loads are applied on the body defines the mode of loading
There are three modes of loading
1. Gradual loading: loads start form zero and gradually increase to maximum
value.
2. Sudden loading: the complete is applied at a time.
3. Impact loading: the load falls from a height and causes strain.
Strain energy due to gradual loading.
Consider a bar of length l. it is subjected to an external load p which gradually
increases from zero to p causing a change of l in the length of the body.
Energy stored in the body =
= work done by external force p
= Average load p x l
= x p x l
