4th /5th JANUARY 2017 FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIMES

Dear Parishioners,

Today we follow on from Jesus Beatitudes/Sermon on the Mount.

There are two images: Jesus says: You are the salt of the earth you
are the light of the world. What an invitation! What a challenge! Salt
preserves food; it seasons food etc. We are told that salt is bad for you! But we need it in our
bodies; we know that the taste of food can be enhanced with salt we are invited to enhance
the lives of others by whom we are.
In the dark dreary days of winter, light is so important. Christ is our light and we are to
reflect the light, goodness and mercy of Christ to those around us and beyond.
We are given very clear examples in the reading from Isaiah. Share your bread with the
hungry and shelter the homeless poor , clothe the naked , do away with clenched fist, the
wicked word We have heard this before. We try to live by these principles. We are invited
to start again and again. We may feel we are getting nowhere. People are still hungry;
homeless, oppressed Yet we must never give up Never lose hope , never imagine that
our little contribution doesnt matter it does and this can be our driving force.
We must let our light shine in the humblest way and this will encourage others. St Paul
mentions the demonstration of the power of the Holy Spirit this is our driving force at
work in our lives.

VISITS: I will be in Ireland for a family wedding next weekend. Then go directly to
Turkey as part of the 3rd Imrali Delegation. There are eleven of us, MEPS, journalists,
politicians and we have requested that we able to visit Abdullah Ocalan in his prison in Imrali
Island in Istanbul. We also ask for the re-opening of the peace talks between the Kurdish
people and Turkey. We will dialogue with local politicians, human rights workers; journalists
etc., and meet with relatives of those unjustly imprisoned. Please pray for our Delegation. I
will try to send communications while there.
THE PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL meeting took place Wednesday last. We covered a
good number of matters relating to parish life. The celebration of Our Golden/Ruby
Anniversary was discussed. In particular, we looked at The Day with John Vianney on 25th
February; updating the Parish magazine; our Parish mission in June ending with a BBQ. We
discussed Parish Finance: looking at Fund raising events for the coming year and the request
from the diocese to sort out a New Budget Module. The progress of the new Alpha Course for
young people; the Courtyard project; health, safety, security in our parish was also on the
agenda. Thanks to all who participated.
If there are issues any parishioners wishes to raise, the PPC is one of the places to do so.
RED HOUSE DEVELOPMENT & STANLEY/CULROSS OPEN SPACE: An Open meeting at
St John Vianney School on Monday 20th February at 3.30pm onwards, where builders and
architects etc. involved will be there to put forward their proposals and answer question. All
who are interested are welcome. (See more details overleaf).

Have a good week, God bless, Fr Joe
