Fieldwork # 01 : Determination of Stadia Interval Factor

FIELDWORK # 1
Title : DETERMINATION OF STADIA INTERVAL FACTOR

Objective: To determine the stadia interval factor of the transit and the theodolite.

Introduction :
Horizontal and vertical distances can be measured indirectly by using the optical properties of the
instruments being used. Stadia interval factor is the ratio of the focal distance to the distance between the
stadia hairs, which for a particular instrument is a constant as long as conditions remain unchanged.

Site: UST Field / level and clear ground.

Instruments :

1 Repeating Theodolite and Engineers transit

1 Steel Tape
2 Leveling Rods
8 Marking Pins / Marker
1 Plumb Bob

Procedure :

1. Write down the instrument number which are you are presently using.

2. Set up and level the instrument over station A.

3. From the center of the instrument, lay out a 120-m distance.

4. Set marking pins on the 15, 30, 45, 60, 75, 90, 105 and 120-m marks. Designate these points as
B,C,D,E,F,G,H and I respectively.

5. With the transit at point A, place the leveling rod at point B and take the stadia hair readings.

6. With the transit still at point A, transfer the leveling rod at point C and take the stadia hair readings.

7. Repeat the process until all the marked points have been observed.

8. Compute the stadia interval factor.

9. Repeat the entire process for the next instrument.

Computations :

K=D/s

Where : K = stadia interval factor

D = distance from the instrument to the point being sighted
S = stadia intercept (upper rdg. lower rdg.)
