Philippine International Chess Championship, 07.12.2014

1.d4 d5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.c4 c6 [The Slav--JP's pet defense against d4.]

HUMOROUS ALAN

I
By Alan L. Severino

have briefly tutored several youngsters and a few older

chess lovers, including my nephew, now FIDE Master
Sander Severino, and I try to instill moral values and discipline
every chance I get. Recently, I came up with an original
anecdote which I intend to use in explaining to my future chess
students the meaning of true wealth. This short story should be
entertaining or, at least, interesting to you. I hope it would be
memorable, particularly to those who love or even adore the so-
called root of all evil, money.

The wealth of two chess players

Two souls, both chess players, faced St. Peter at

the Pearly Gates. The saint asked the first one, a
reed-thin, white-haired chess master, What have
you done?

18
The master said, I love chess and have taught it to
many young kids, knowing that the game can help
them prepare for the future. I always reminded my
students of the spirit of sportsmanship and good
manners in playing chess or any other game. I
offered free lessons to talented but poor chess
enthusiasts. Time and again, I kept telling them to be
humble in victory and gracious in defeat, and to pray
to the Almighty before every tournament game so
they will be able to do their best.

St. Peter smiled and pointed the good soul to a

golden door. Inside were former world chess
champions American Bobby Fischer, Russian Tigran
Petrosian and Cuban Raoul Capablanca waiting to
play with him.

The second soul, a stout, be-mustached

grandmaster exclaimed, Wow, that really is
heaven!

Without waiting for the usual question, he proudly

declared, I had amassed millions of dollars from
chess tournaments, chess books and exhibitions. I
built a mansion with a living room as wide as a city
plaza and servants quarters as big as a church.

St. Peter replied, Yes, but the Divine Internet shows

that you also put up illegal gambling dens with chess
clubs as fronts. You played, in more ways than one,
with 8 lady chess masters. You mated them on and
off the chessboard, made them your mistresses and
pushed them around like your 8 pawns. And whats
worse, you played with your pocket chess set during
the burial ceremony for your wife.
