Trial Analysis Essay
To begin with, this case should never have come to trial. This case is simple as black and white

(Lee 271). The purpose of this Essay is to compare the jurors verdict with my verdict to find

similarities or differences. The trial of Tom Robinson In to Kill a Mocking Bird can be described

as unjust in todays world but just in Maycombs time. The Trial is simple as there is an

evaluation of enough evidence that points to the suspect who beat up Mayella, Mr. Bob Ewell.

Tom Robinson is innocent because he didnt have anything to hide during his time at the witness

stand (Lee 255).

The Jurys verdict is affected by Race, Gender roles, and Maycombs Universe of Obligation.

While my verdict is, non-bias and is based on non-bias opinions and the evaluation of the

evidence collected.

The Jurys verdict does not acknowledge all the evidence that was collected throughout the trial.

The big key points of evidence that the Jury doesnt acknowledge throughout the trial was

Mayella having a black eye on the right side of her face. This suggests that only a left-handed

person would be able to do this. Also, Tom Robinsons left arm is crippled. (Lee 225). This also

includes the Ewells hesitating to answer each question Atticus or the jury had for them (Lee

245). Even though there was enough valid evidence leading to the suspect Mr. Robert Ewell, bias

affected the jurys verdict. The Jury was nice and polite with Mayella and Mr. Ewell, but when it

was Tom Robinsons turn to go to the witness stand this is where we see the jurors bias towards

white people.
My Verdict acknowledges all the evidence throughout the trial. My verdict is based on honest

unbiased-opinions. My verdict is that Tom Robinson is innocent based on the evidence that was

collected throughout the trial. My verdict includes the sufficient evaluation of evidence that the

Jury did not acknowledge. It points to Mr. Bob Ewell as the suspect who beat up Mayella Ewell.

Mayella had a black eye on the right side of her face. This suggests that only a left-handed

person would have been able to do this (Lee 225). Also, another major key point of evidence is

when Mayella was being defensive of her father, her father was looking at her angrily. (Lee 245).

In my opinion I believe that the Universe of Obligation in Maycomb County affected the jurys

verdict due to how Maycomb County sees blacks and gender roles in Maycomb. At the top of

Maycombs Universe of Obligation women are the most favored. At that time, many men

thought that women were fragile and always needed to be protected. During the 1900s and 1930s

many stereotypes popped up like African Americans are sexual predators to white women. Men

of color especially black men are stereotyped as predators. Many white men began to look at

African Americans as sexual predators to their pure white women.. This affected the jurys

verdict because the Jury did not think that Mayella would have hugged Tom Robinson and kissed

him. The Jury believes that Tom Robinson had an intention to rape her due to the false

stereotypes. It is possible that survivors who recognize that men of color are treated more harshly

by the criminal justice system than white men.

In conclusion, the verdict should have been that Tom Robinson is innocent. Since the Jurys

verdict was affected by race, gender, bias and Maycombs Universe of Obligation. While my

verdict is, non-biased and is based on non-biased opinions from each side of the case and the

evaluation of the evidence that was collected. My verdict does not hide or throw away the key

points of evidence that leads to Bob Ewell, the suspect of the beating of Mayella. In todays time
the trial of Tom Robinson could be described as unjust, bias, and unfair to the person who is

being accused of the crime.
