Chapter I

Introduction

Fish and fisheries is an important sector of most of developing and developed countries
of the world from the stand point of income and employment generation. Like any other
countries of the world. fishing is one of the most important primary economic activities
which having great roles in supporting livelihoods worldwide and also is an important
source of diet for over one billion people in the world..
Despite of the enormous increase in the fisheries population the prosperity, welfare and
development of the fisher folk in Purok baliwasan, barangay pag-asa kalamansig, sultan
kudarat as measured by the government authorities are seemed to be a major obstacle
or a matter of ever concern. The majority live under poverty and financial instability and
therefore, they are at the lowest level of their profile in terms. It throws hights to an
aspect that the socio-economic and cultural backwardness of the fisher folk should be
analysed in an entirely different angle that is from the point of view of their income and
expenditure pattern. The present study is an attempt made to illustrate the problems
and prospects of fisher folk in Purok baliwasan, barangay pag-asa kalamansig, sultan
kudarat.
Objectives
Generally, the study aim to:
1. To find out the socio-economic characteristics of fishermen.
2. Identify the problem of fishermen face by every day.

Significance of the study


Fishing is one of the most important primary economic activities which having great
roles in supporting livelihoods worldwide and also is an important source of diet for over
one billion people in the world.
The people who can benefits this study is the fishermen, government and people.
Chapter II
Review related literature
Ralph Turvey and Kirby (1957) in their article entitled Economics of Fisheries The
major problems identified by these authors included the lack of knowledge of potential
resources, ignorance, lack of capital and organizational weakness among fishermen.
The main conclusion of these authors is that in most of the poor countries, the physical
conditions for fishing expansion was very low and the prevailing social, institutional and
economic conditions prevented the take Off.
Noble and Narayanan Kutty (1978) in their article entitled The economics of
indigenous fishing units operating at Manassery near Kochi, they indicated that the
gross income in relation to investment is very good in the indigenous fishing units and
giving out proportionately higher rate of production than the mechanized units. The
country crafts require comparatively less investment and it can be economically put into
action even when the fish in the sea is scanty
