What happened in Spain in the XVII Century? Read this text and answer the questions
below.
The 17th century in Spain
Wars during the 16th century were long and very expensive. As a result, in the 17th century, the
Spanish Empire was weak and began to break up.
During the 17th century, Phillip III, Phillip IV and Charles II chose ministers to help them govern.
The ministers governed in the name of the monarch. Some, like the Duke of Lerma and the
Count-Duke of Olivares, became very powerful.
Around 1640, the king tried to reduce the power of administrative institutions, and increase
his own power. As a result, revolts broke out in Catalonia and Portugal. Finally, Portugal
became independent.
On the international scene, confrontations with the Netherlands continued. In 1648, the
Netherlands declared their independence.
From around 1550 and 1700 a large quantity of exceptional artistic and literary works were
produced. It was called the Golden Age. In architecture the Baroque style developed with its
rich ornamentation and curved lines. The court painter, Diego Velazquez, became famous for
portraits, religious themes and scenes from daily life. Miguel de Cervantes, Francisco de
Quevedo, Luis de Gongora, Lope de Vega, Calderon de la Barca wrote novels, poetry and plays.
