Discussion of Results
As seen in the table, we experiment the solubility of some elements and
noted their physical properties. The first one were the carbonates of some group I-A
and group II-A elements. Lithium Carbonate physical properties are smooth,
powder fine, white in color and slightly soluble in water. Sodium Carbonate is coarse
powder and rough looking, white in color and soluble in water. Potassium Carbonate
has round grain appearance, color white and soluble in water. Magnesium
Carbonate and Calcium Carbonate are chunky powder and color white and insoluble
in water. Calcium carbonate is insoluble in water because it is extremely stable as a
solid and water doesn't have sufficient solvating capability to cause the ions to
separate and come into solution. The Barium Carbonate has a pebble like
appearance, white in color and insoluble in water. The carbonates tend to become
less soluble as you go down the Group. The second one is we noted the physical
state, color and appearance of elements in the Group IV-A. Carbon is fine grain and
color black. Silicon has pebble like and smooth appearance and pinkish. Tin has a
shiny and rounded grain appearance and the last one is lead which has a pebble like
appearance and color gray.
Next, we experiment about the reaction of group II-A Metal Oxides to Litmus
Paper. First is the Magnesium Oxide, the pink litmus paper turned blue so we nted it
as base. The chemical equation is MgO+H2o
Mg(OH)2. next is the Calcium oxide
which is a base because the pink litmus paper turned blue. The chemical equation
of it is CaO+H2o
Ca(OH)2. The last metal oxide is the Barium Oxide which is also
a base because the pink litmus paper turned blue. The chemical equation of it is
BaO+H2o
Ba(OH)2. Metallic oxides are also called basic oxides because they
react with H2O to form a base. The last experiment is about the non-metal oxides.
The reaction of the pentoxide and antimony to the litmus paper is acid because the

blue litmus paper turned pink. The chemical equation of the pentoxide is P 2O5+3H2o
2H3PO4. The chemical equation for antimony (III) is Sb2O3+3H2o
2Sb(OH)3.
the reaction of the litmus paper between the nitric acid and copper is acid because
the blue litmus paper turned pink. The chemical equation is HNO + Cu
Cu(NO3)2+ H2o+ NO2.

Conclusion
Every group of elements has their own similar property. In carbonate
elements, as you go down the group the less soluble the elements are. The
difference between metal oxides and non-metal oxides are their reaction to water.
The metal oxides produce bases while the non-metal oxides produce acids.
