The film maker Nagraj Manjule describe the movie as
an epic love story but its different from its kind. The
movie reflects how the love nurture between the social
evil of the society which is based on caste and politics
which divides the society into various groups and
affected by these setbacks.

Section 1: How does film reflect its social

context?
In the film its shown that how the societies are divided
in the rural part of the Maharashtra where a higher
caste and politically influential person becomes the
leader and no one is allowed to speak against him or to
the persons close to him if they did anything wrong.
Everyone will do the work in the way he wants to like.
So basically, this film shows the relation between
different sub part of societies on the basis of politics
and caste system.

Section 2: Connecting Sociological theories

with the film.
2 theories which connects the film and the topics that
we studied are:
1. Incorporation of women in society: In the
movie, hypocrisies of the rural Indian society are
clearly visible where people are amazed or say bad
words if they see a girl riding a bike like one in the
scene where the actress came to college on a bike
(22:00 22:34) or driving a tractor in the scene
when she came to boys house (46:51 49:05).

The women empowerment is never considered in

the society even people dont mind in harming
their own blood to save their fake honour which
happen in one of the scene where when the boy
and the girl caught by the girls family they were
forced to marriage to save their honour both in
social and political way (1:13:28 1:22:40) just like
in the same way we have studied that only data
related to men are considered in measure of
various aspect of the sociology.
2. Caste System in society: Caste system is one of
the major problem is still practiced not only in rural
but in modern Indian societies. In the movie, it is
shown that the upper-class people are powerful
and rich whereas the low-class people lead a
miserable life and still depends on the upper-class
for the living. The low caste people are not allowed
to sit next to the upper caste people like the way
happened in the scene where old lady ask the
actress cousin to have water and then his friend
said that he is a Patil and cant drink water of their
home (1:22:47 1:23:17). It is clearly visible that
the caste system is present in each and every
society of the world and is still prevailing.

Section 3: Sociological imagination

displayed by movie.
It is clearly visible through the movie that the Indian
society is full of social evils where even those people
who wants to escape are not allowed to cross the
barrier of the society. The upper caste people
dominates majorly in every part of the society by the
means of politics and caste system. The film
connects both biography and history and private
troubles and public issues like:
No consideration of women empowerment. This
issue is still face by many girls and women in the

society and is still prevailing since past biography and history.

The women and girls of the upper-class people of
the society are not safe in their own house and
this also affects the people of the lower-class as
it would be a huge problem for them if they mess
up with the upper-class people - private troubles
and public issue.
