Does your child want to play all the time or watch TV non-stop? Is he slow in writing? Does his
teacher complain that he is always the last person to finish in the class? If he is active and naughty,
then the number of complaints will be more, since he will also be disturbing and distracting his fellow
classmates. But is he responsible for this behavior of his?
Probable Causes
When the child does not meet the minimum
standards set by the school or parents with
regard to academics, we term that attitude as
disinterest in studies. This is a very generic
remark to make. Firstly, it should be checked if
the child dislikes studies in general. It might be
that he is finding it uninteresting due to poor
teaching, inability to cope with the tests or
evaluation mechanisms, distractions etc. The
child might be disinterested in a particular
subject, say, Mathematics or languages or he
just does not like writing, but enjoys reading.
Though all of these symptoms are referred
collectively by the same generic name disinterest in academics, they definitely differ
from one another. The solutions they demand
are also different.
Some children need continuous attention and
follow-up from the parents side on their studies
regarding the completion of their home-work
or class work. Some might even require to be
reminded to start studies, and if not done, might
continuously postpone. A little probing gives
the clue.

Practical reasons
The learning process is not interesting or
captivating enough to hold the attention of the
child. It could be the syllabus, it could be the
curriculum; it could even be insufficient practical
exercises and illustrations. It could even be lack
of hands-on sessions and hence the child is
unable to relate the concepts learnt in the
practical scenario. Sometimes, the reason could
be the projects that are beyond the capacity of
the students. The net effect is that the child tries
to avoid the activity.
This leads to the next evil - compulsion to
study. And then, the Newtons third law
happens. There is an equal and opposite reaction
- compulsion creates repulsion.
Children are compelled to study, instead of
being made to understand how enjoyable the
act of studying is. Compulsion makes them hate
the subjects, teachers, environment and all
activities related to school, except for friends.
The hate psychology grows up faster especially
when the child gets into the company of likeminded peers. The child gets labeled as a

he has given up drinking; but also excels in

A few students have also
chosen to help teach other
children how to live and
thrive. Arunitha is one of
eight children in a family
struggling to meet the basic
needs of food and clothing.
Her eldest sister committed
suicide because her father
was not able to pay a dowry prior to her
wedding. Her parents wanted their children to
go to work. When Arunitha heard about the

her parents to let her continue her schooling.

2. Master Your
Manifestor 101
Ultimately, we are all
responsible for what we
create. The techniques, tools
and channels shared by Dr.
Pillai are all aimed at
developing the Divine spark
that already exists in each one
of us.
An essential part of each
teaching is how to stop
manifesting our fears, worries
and anxieties and how to start
manifesting what we innately
know is possible.
3. Be Practical About
Your Needs
Dr. Pillai often says,
Philosophy bakes no bread.
The teachings shared through
Pillai Center are designed to
address everyday real world
experiences. Moksha at the
end of our human experience
is Divine, but what about the
70+ years until then?
We all long for good health,
wealth, relationships, finances,
careers and overall fulfillment.
Beyond the philosophy of
blissful living, these tools are
practical and simple enough
for anyone to use who has an
immediate
need
for
improvement in any area of
life.

Some one came to me and cried that whatever he does, the boss does not like him. Boss puts him
down. He goes with great enthusiasm into the boss room but the boss pulls him down. He is hurt,
because despite the fact he works so hard, he has no encouraging words from his boss. Then he is
upset and gets frustrated about
it.
I told him that the problem is
not with his boss. It is his
problem. He suffers from a low
self esteem. He also has another
problem and that is approvalseeking.
You are not a pet animal. It
needs to be patted all the time,
in order to keep the animal
cheerful .throughout. You know
you are good and the world is a
maya or illusion. You have to do a good job. You do it to the best of your knowledge and ability!
The second one is approval-seeking.
Why do you have some one to approve you? You do your best and leave the rest. Approvalseeking is a very bad expectation. Then you wont be happy at all. That does not mean you close
your eyes and say that what I do is the best and my way is the highway. Listen to the boss as to what
he has to say. Do not get frustrated by it. But keep in mind two things: Your low self-esteem and
your approval-seeking behaviour. You will then be able to change.
