ART
Legacy and Landscape
A couple of interesting exhibitions coming up at INVERNESS MUSEUM & ART GALLERY
this month, starting on 07 JAN with a memorial exhibition of drawings, collages,
paintings, prints and animations by the much-loved Oxford-born, Black-Isle-raised
artist KATY DOVE [1] (19702015). Katy created meditative spaces through her
combinations of sound and image, and contemplative responses to colour and rhythm.
Katy was very interested in presenting her work to younger audiences and found
children to be especially receptive to her work. She was very active in artist-initiated
projects commencing in her student years in Dundee with the Unit 13 group and as part
of Full Eye with Anne-Marie Copestake and Ariki Porteous. Once the exhibition comes
to an end in IMAGs art galleries on 25 Feb, it will travel north to Thurso Art Gallery and
St. Fergus Gallery in Wick at the beginning of March.
IMAG is also the venue for DISCOVERING RED, GREEN & BLUE, an exhibition of
photos by CHRIS WHITE. The show is named after the popular ski location and sixth
highest Scottish peak Cairn Gorm, which is translated as either Blue Hill or Green Hill.
However they were long before known as Am Monadh Ruadh or The Red Hills, due to
the granite composition. The Scottish Highlands have long been a source of inspiration
for photographer Chris White and the Cairngorms National Park is an area that has
captured not only his imagination, but also his heart. During 2015 Chris took regular
trips to this highland wilderness, recording the changing seasons and the1unique views
that only our beautiful landscape can offer. The show runs from 17 JAN04 FEB.

To The Fools Who Dream

January always heralds a considerable clutch of Me!Me!Me! awards contenders and here
they come a-charging. Watch the myriad nominations roll in for LA LA LAND [1] (Vue &
EC 13 Jan)anticipation is at fever pitch for the romantic re-pairing of EMMA STONE and
RYAN GOSLING in song-and-dance form; can talented newbie director Damien Whiplash
Chazelle really overthrow the might of experience brought by Catholic heavyweights
Scorcese (SILENCE [2], Vue 01 Jan, EC 20 Jan) or Mel Gibson (HACKSAW RIDGE [3],
Vue 27 Jan)? The former of those two features the engaging talents of an emaciated ADAM
DRIVER and LIAM NEESON in a tale of Spanish Jesuit priests evangelising Japan, which
also features ANDREW GARFIELDwho additionally leads the line in Gibsons WWII heroic
conscientious objector drama. Both are hot tips and look to be very well executed and highly
engaging filmsnot sure how were supposed to feel about making such strongly Christianweighted movies in the current global climate, maybe were supposed not to notice. Is this
propaganda? Discuss*. (*Amongst yourselves, not with us over email, thank you!)
A stronger challenge to LLL might come from JACKIE [4] (Vue 20 Jan) in the form of the
usually-magnificent NATALIE PORTMANs performance as JFKs wife both before and after
his 1963 assassination. Watch out also for potential awards for the scoreby the UKs
own awesomely original and talented MICA LEVI (of Micachu & The Shapes fame). Another
Brit gong sniff might come in LION [5] (Vue 20 Jan) for DEV PATEL who stars alongside
ROONEY MARA in this heartwarming long-lost-family-finding piece. Finally, nominations
beckon for the understated brilliance of CASEY AFFLECK, who has landed rave reviews in
MANCHESTER BY THE SEA [6] (first seen at this years Inv Film Fest, now at Vue, 13 Jan)
as has MICHELLE WILLIAMS. FYI, Thats Manc Massachusetts, not NW England
Other January releases likely to warm a lot of seats include the game-to-screen ASSASSINS
CREED [7] (Vue, 01 Jan), Warren Beattys stylish retro Howard Hughes biopic, RULES
DONT APPLY [8] (Vue, 27 Jan), the much-publicised animation SING [10] (Vue, 27 Jan)
with voices of McCONAUGHEY, WITHERSPOON, JOHANSSON, MACFARLANE, OFFERMAN
and othersand, despite all the stellar releases that precede it, possibly the best release
of the month, our long-awaited re-visit to Renton, Begbie, Spud, Sick Boy et al in Danny
Boyles T2 TRAINSPOTTING [9] (Vue, 27 Jan). Phew, therell be a seat with your bum-shape
on it somewhere before the month is out
In box office terms, the above might be the behemoths, but monsters of another kind are
to be found in A MONSTER CALLS [11] (Vue 01 Jan, EC 27 Jan SPLIT [12] (Vue 20 Jan);
and DENIAL [13] (Vue 27 Jan). The first of these is a family-friendly romp with LIAM NEESON
voicing a monster yew tree and live-action performances from the likes of FELICITY JONES
and SIGOURNEY WEAVER in the story of LEWIS MACDOUGALLs Conor overcoming the loss
of his mother and school bullying; the second sees (finally) the apparent resurgence of M.
Night Shyamalan in a spooky tale spookily told of three teenage girls abducted by a man
(JAMES MCAVOY) with 23 wildly differing personalities, including the foreboding Beast
McAvoy gets to ham it up to the full. The terrible trio are completed by TIMOTHY SPALLs
Holocaust denier, David Irvingbeing tackled by RACHEL WEISZ, TOM WILKINSON plus
Sherlocks ANDREW SCOTT and MARK GATISS.
A word too for a couple of potentially great curiosities that might appear (depending on how
adventurous Vue are feeling): GHOST IN THE SHELL [14] (25 Jan) and THE DARKEST
DAWN (01 Jan). The latter is a UK Sci-fi horror, a bit like District 9 mated with Blair Witch
found footage, alien invasion, from Hungerfords Drew Casson; the former is the latest

SCARLETT JOHANSSON as the awesome Major Motoko Kusanagi.
Eden Court as usual has its eclectic mix of newies (see above), last months releases
and compelling foreign and/or old titles. Aside from the newbs, youll be able to catch
John Hughes-esque THE EDGE OF SEVENTEEN, Oliver Stones SNOWDEN, Rom-Fi
PASSENGERS, T.Hanks award bet SULLY, and UK-Com A STREET CAT NAMED BOB. Films
already released but not available here yet include DOG EAT DOG [15] (Cage & Dafoe
directed by Taxi Driver writer Paul Schrader), animated BALLERINA and live action LIFE,
ANIMATED. Other overseas titles strongly recommended include: THE CONNECTION, THE
UNKNOWN GIRL, UNITED STATES OF LOVE, THE EAGLE HUNTRESS and THE BLACK HEN.
All this might mean that some of the months more generic film releases notice a lot less
than other months. Ben Afflecks Untouchables take LIVE BY NIGHT, Kate Beckinsales regurge UNDERWORLD: BLOOD WARS, Dystopian teen flick THE WHITE KING and xXx 3: THE
RETURN OF XANDER CAGE (Let me simplify it for you: Kick some ass and try to look dope
while you do it as Samuel L. puts it to Vin Diesel) all seem a little uninspiring set against
those others. But if theyre just your kinda thing, then enjoy

KIDS
Put On Your Dancing Shoes
Christmas isnt officially over until the tree is down and although by then all the presents
you chose so carefully will have outlived their useful purpose, theres another cause for
celebration just three weeks away, namely Burns Night. While whisky, haggis and poetry
arent necessarily top of the list of favourite things in childrens minds, everyone likes a
dance, so the WEE BURNS CEILDH [1] at EDEN COURT on SUN 22 JAN from 11amnoon
and again from 34pm looks well worth attending. Held as part of the venues Big Burns
Stramash taking place over the weekend of 21 & 22 JAN, its aimed at under eights, but
big brothers and sisters are welcome too. There are also lantern making classes, cinema
made by kids and a torchlight procession. More details on our Specials pages (p28-30)
Its good to see that Eden Court invariably manage to provide supplementary shows aimed
at kids when grown up shows come to town and thats also the case with Scottish
Ballets much anticipated performances of Hansel and Gretel. The WEE HANSEL AND
GRETEL [2] show on 27 JAN is a specially adapted hour-long performance featuring the
companys dancers accompanied live by the Scottish Ballet Orchestra. The perfect way for
young families to discover the magic of ballet.
Perhaps it might even inspire the youngsters to have a go at performing themselves. As our
hometown hero Karen Gillan has proved, classes at Eden Court can provide a springboard
to great things and there are plenty of them starting up in January. The LETS PRETEND,
MINI MOVERS and TINY TUNES ones are aimed specifically at those aged 4 and under and
encompass singing, dancing and generally falling in love with acting. Though their purpose
is primarily to encourage movement, imagination and creativity, a future stars career could
genuinely start here. Full details of these classes and more at eden-court.co.uk

Time To Relax

MUSIC

Recent months have seen a rash of top acts playing up here so its perhaps to be
expected that things are quietening down a bit this month. Loads of performers
have announced shows in the Highlands for the spring and summer so, if nothing
else, January gives us all a chance to put some money aside for those tickets. And
in the meantime there are still a fair few shows across the genres worth attending.
Classical fans are well catered for, perhaps most notably with the RSNO VIENNESE
GALA [1] at EDEN COURT on 10 JAN. Based around the music of that citys most
famous son, Johann Strauss the evening promises to whirl you away to a world
of elegant waltzes, playful polkas, and good old-fashioned operetta romance,
featuring award winners, soprano JENNIFER FRANCE [2] and conductor, BEN
GERNON [3].
SASHA SAVALONI [4]s repertoire ranges from the renaissance to the
contemporary and the Iranian Scottish guitarist is equally adept at everything he
plays as those of you whove seen him play before, most notably at the Ullapool
Guitar Festival, will testify. Hell be displaying his prowess at the SPECTRUM
CENTRE on 20 JAN. A word too for the BEINN ARTAIR PIANO TRIO [5] who
are playing NAIRN COMMUNITY CENTRE on 21 JAN. Consisting of Oliver Rundell
(piano), Alice Rickards (violin) and Sonia Cromarty (cello) they have a fantastic
rapport and are engaging to watch. Sonia and Alice also play in the string duo
High Heels and Horse Hair.
On the folk front, its good to see the return of two regular visitors. KING
CREOSOTE [6], one of the founding members of Fifes Fence Collective brings
his elegantly inventive creations to BOGBAIN FARM on 12 JAN, while a take on the
genre from the other end of the country comes from SETH LAKEMAN [7], whos
at EDEN COURT on 25 JAN.
Folk of a more traditional hue comes from the always popular TORRIDON at
IRONWORKS on 27 JAN while rising star ROBYN STAPLETON will be performing
Songs of Burns at EDEN COURT on 28 JAN, accompanied by two of Scotlands
finest instrumentalists: Alistair Paterson on piano, celeste and harmonium, and
Orcadian fiddler, Kristan Harvey (Blazin Fiddles).
Clubbers will be excited by the prospect of MUMBAI SCIENCE at IRONWORKS on
28 JAN, the Belgian Techno duo who are set to be that countrys most successful
musical export since 2ManyDJs, while rock fans will be keeping their powder dry
until the arrival of the rip roaring Newport combo SKINDRED [8] at IRONWORKS on
04 FEB (supported by RAGING SPEEDHORN), though they may pop out on 28 JAN,
again to IRONWORKS, to see dynamic Glasgow four-piece, SINGLE BY SUNDAY [9]

as well as a very special film premiere of the Burns Stramash Up a film made

Dog Days
Weve been told that this is due to be a snowy winter, which is good news for
the organisers of the AVIEMORE SLED DOG RALLY [1] in GLENMORE FOREST
n on 28 & 29 JAN. Every year since 1984, mushers from across the UK have
gathered for the biggest event in the British sled dog racing calendar. Put on by
the Siberian Husky Club of Great Britain in conjunction with Forestry Commission
Scotland, the race is run on forest trails around the beautiful Loch Morlich, in the
shadow of the Cairngorms. From an original of only 12 teams, the race is now the
largest event of its kind in the UK, with over 1,000 sled dogs and 250 mushers.
The race features teams of between two and eight dogs pulling their musher on
a sled around a four to seven mile trail. As we say, were hoping for snow, but if
theres none, races still go on with mushers using a three-wheeled rig that looks
like a tricycle without a seat.
Earlier in the month, the New Year brings with it several traditional events
including the LOVAT CUP shinty match on 01 JAN between BEAULY SC and 2015
Camanachd Cup winners (and only team to topple the mighty Newtonmore in
2016), LOVAT SC [2] with the former hoping to redress last years 32 defeat
at the hands of the latter. Keeping with New Years shinty, down at Kingussie,
youll find the traditional NEW YEARS DAY SHINTY CHALLENGE MATCH for the
Bob Sinclair Memorial Trophy, featuring the Kingussie All Stars V Kingussie 2016
1st team, starting at 1pm at Market Stance.
Many of the traditional New Year events take advantage of a post-festive desire
to get fit, so expect plenty of entrants at the AONACH MOR UPHILL on 01 JAN
at NEVIS RANGE and the fittingly titled HANGOVER HIKE at GLENMORE VISITOR
CENTRE on 02 JAN

to grab a ticket and enjoy the fun.
Even in a panto few figures are as larger than life as Michael Jackson was. And his
star shows no sign of waning as proven by the popularity of THRILLER LIVE [1],
the musical show designed to pay homage to one of the 20th centurys greatest
entertainers. Now in a record-breaking eighth year of a run in Londons West End
and having been seen by three and a half million people, its coming to EDEN
COURT from 30 JAN04 FEB. Expect all the hits, plus spectacular dance routines
and an accomplished cast doing justice to Jacksons towering legacy.
Unashamed theatricality was always one of Jacksons strong points and thats very
much at the heart of VAMPIRES ROCK [2], a fresh instalment of which comes
to EDEN COURT on 20 JAN. Subtitled Ghost Train its ostensibly a follow-up to
the Musical Concert that proved so successful last time round, adding spooky
elements to the tried and trusted mix of spectacular takes on a host of rock anthems.
As we noted, the panto season is over, so if youre after a rather more elegant
interpretation of a classic fairy tale, you cant go wrong with SCOTTISH BALLETs
glorious production of HANSEL & GRETEL [3] at EDEN COURT from 2528 JAN.
The story of the youngsters journey into the clutches of the evil witch with the
gingerbread house is beautifully delivered and supplemented by a bewitching score
performed live by the Scottish Ballet Orchestra. Highlight of the month.

3
Burns Night celebrations seem to have been coming back into favour in recent
years and as well as plenty of haggis eating and Rabbie toasting in private homes,
there are a couple of public events worth heading along to. You can read elsewhere
in this issue about the BIG BURNS STRAMASH at EDEN COURT, but theres a neat
twist to the usual activities with a BURNS MURDER MYSTERY at STRATHPEFFER
PAVILION on the big night, 25 JAN. A three course meal is included in the 35 ticket.
JAMIE MACDONALD [4] is one of the more unusual stand ups around in that hes blind,
which makes his comic observations all the more remarkable. But no less hilarious as
hell demonstrate in his show, wittily titled High Vis at EDEN COURT on 26 JAN.

EATING
OUT

Thai Dining
85/87 Academy Street, Inverness 01463 220880
Of all the worlds cuisines, that of
South and South East Asia is the
most nuanced, the most dependent
not, as is the case in much of the
West, on the quality of ingredients, but
on the alchemic balance of tastes and
subtle layering of flavours. Its partly
born of economy (a poor populace
making the best out of whatevers
available), partly of climate (things
have to be fresh and cooked fast
or preserved) and partly because
of geography (easy access to the
spice route and millennia spent both
perfecting indigenous creativity while
absorbing the culinary influences
from neighbouring countries). And, of
all those Asian nations, the one that
does its cooking more wondrously
than any other is Thailand.

important, chefs taking great pride in

the presentation of dishes.
Inverness has actually been pretty
well served on the Thai front for some
time, with Georges in Queen Street
and Hootananny both serving that
countrys food. The latter has ditched
the concept for a Scottish menu
though, while the former also includes
South Indian cuisine in a bafflingly
extensive menu, necessarily diluting
some of its impact and ultimately
gaining more accolades for its Indian
dishes than for its Thai ones.

work in progress with several boardedup buildings. Word has it however that
a couple of craft ale bars are in the
pipeline so this could be a city hotspot
before too long and Thai Dining
certainly has the look of a place thats
determined to set a standard to which
its surroundings should aspire.
Deceptively smalltheres only room
for about thirty dinersbut clever
use of mirrors and lighting, plus a
clean, modern design makes it seem
spacious, while the friendly, welcoming
staff (another Thai trait) set the tone
right from the start. On an early
Thursday evening when we visit, were
just about the only customers, though
it does get busy later most nights, so
booking is probably recommended.

Thai Dining however, as its name

proclaims, is devoted to Thai food
and Thai food alone, with chefs born
and raised in that country ensuring an
authenticity and skill that you wont
find anywhere else in Inverness and,
Thai cooking places emphasis indeed, in the Highlands as a whole. And you can see just why its so
popular when the food arrives. A
on dishes with strong aromatic
components and a spicy edge, built Its based in what used to be a rather couple of bottles of Thais national
around the concept of having up to hit-and-miss Chinese restaurant down Singha beer, with its distinctive barley

each dish or the overall meal: sour, a part of town thats undergone peruse a menu that although offering

meat, poultry or vegetarian variations,

making for countless combinations.
Its good as always to see a place with
the confidence to stick to just a few
dishes done well rather than trying to
offer everything under the sun just for
the sake of it and our meal certainly
bears out the wisdom behind such an
approach.

incorporating Thai basil leaves and,

one imagines, a host of secret herbs
and spices. Its another success,
further demonstrating the prowess of
the cooking. Theres a chilli tingle, but
again nothing to trample the elegant
array of underlying flavours. Coconut
rice adds yet another dimension to
proceedings.

We decide to have the Mixed Starters,

available for two or more and offering
a substantial selection of delightful
light bites, namely Chicken Satay,
Vegetable Tempura, Spring Rolls
and Fishcakes. As expected, theyre
presented beautifully, surrounding a
carrot elaborately carved into a rose
and accompanied by a selection
of dipping sauces that supply the
aforementioned tastes of sweet,
sour, salty and spicy. Theres an
accomplished crispiness to the freshly
fried elements, the spring rolls being
particularly impressive. The fishcakes
are excellent too, possessing a
distinctive springiness without being
rubbery, the flavours of ginger and
lemongrass perfectly judged, while the
chicken satay skewers are beautifully
tender and, as with the rest of the
food, clearly freshly cooked.

Weve noted before how puddings are

invariably a disappointment in Asian
restaurants, but here theyre as good
as the main courses, certainly in the
case of my Kanom Pang Sang Kha
Yha, which turns out to be a green
and yellow coloured coconut custard,
alongside which a bamboo steamer
contains pieces of warm chocolate
brioche to dip. Its breathtakingly
good and, though gloriously indulgent,
not as sickly sweet as might have
been expected. A memorable taste
sensation and something definitely
not to be missed if you eat here.

My companions Guoy Tod is a rather

more familiar dessert being banana
fritters served with vanilla ice cream
and drizzled with honey. Once again
the frying is top notch so the fitters
arent soggy or greasy. If theres
