Yes, its month number nine, but which Sept will show up
this year? The Autumns here early wet, dull and get-yerganzies-oot chilly one, or the this is the kind of weather you
should have been having for the past 3 months, scorcher
variety? Either way, it is the gateway to warming res and
whisky, so we dont mind a bit. September also heralds some
well-established annual waymarkers such as Loopallu
(established 11 years ago), Blas (12 years), the Loch Ness
Marathon (14 years) and the Kirking Of The Council (erm,
400+ years?!) so dont let familiarity breed contempt, get out
and enjoy them, and tell them we sent you

ART
Art & Architecture
You may not know, but 2016 is Scotlands Year of Innovation, Architecture & Design and
theres a good opportunity to celebrate that this month with a specially created Secret
Studio tour, running as part of the FINDHORN BAY ARTS FESTIVAL which takes place
from 2126 SEP (see Specials, P29). Youll take a trip around the many art studios in
the area, meet local artists and enjoy fine art, crafts and sculpture and film along the
way. Complimentary Benromach Whisky, shortbread and nibbles too! Other visual art
highlights include Graeme Roger & Chris Birds Frames Per Second [1], Luke Jerrams
Glass Microbiology [2] and 2015 Landscape Photographer of The Year, Ian Camerons
Transient Light [3]. Visit findhornbayfestival.com to find out more and book your tickets.
More celebration of architecture with a special event on 03 SEP called SKETCH NESS.
Organised by the Inverness Architectural Association it offers the opportunity to capture
the streets, scenes and buildings of Inverness as part of an on-location sketching
group. Starts and ends at Inverness Museum and Art Gallery. Free to all. Book your
place at Kirsten.Body@highlifehighland.com or 01463 237114. 10am till 3pm.
INCHMORE GALLERY have a good looking exhibition by KITTY WATT entitled 30 YEARS
OF PRINTMAKING. As the title suggests, the artist, who was born in Sussex but has
lived up here since the eighties, is something of a long-time exponent of the art of
etching and making prints. She lives on a remote croft and the wild Highland landscape
infuses much of her work. The exhibition opens on 03 SEP.
If looking at the world through a lens is more your thing, theres a PHOTOGRAPHY
FAIR at STRATHPEFFER PAVILION on 10 & 11 SEP, a two day event showcasing a mix
of wall art for both exhibition and sale, as well as calendars, cards and gifts by local
photographers.

Indies & Oscar hopefuls

With the summer blockbuster rush done, SEPember sees an assortment of interesting
indies coming out of the woodwork. Chief among the months more offbeat offerings
is CAPTAIN FANTASTIC [4] (09 SEP @ Vue, 2329 SEP @ EC), a bittersweet comedydrama which attracted buzz and awards at Sundance and Cannes particularly for VIGGO
MORTENSENs performance as a father raising his children separate from society.
Also arriving off a wave of festival acclaim is vicious, spiky heist-thriller-cum-modern-day
Western HELL OR HIGH WATER [1] (09 SEP Vue, 2329 SEP EC) a tale of family and
crime in Texas, from Starred Up director David Mackenzie and Sicario screenwriter Taylor
Sheridan, and starring CHRIS PINE, BEN FOSTER, and JEFF BRIDGES.
Another Cannes favourite was CAF SOCIETY [2] (02 SEP Vue, 1622 SEP EC), the
47th (!) film by WOODY ALLEN a romantic comedy-drama set in 30s New York, starring
JEANNIE BERLIN, STEVE CARRELL, JESSE EISENBERG, KRISTEN STEWART, BLAKE
LIVELY, PARKER POSEY and COREY STOLL. Meanwhile, NOEL CLARKE is back behind
(and in front of) the camera with BROTHERHOOD [5] (02 SEP Vue), the final chapter
of the trilogy started by 2005s Kidulthood. Controversial Argentinian auteur PABLO
TRAPERO also gives us his latest in THE CLAN (02 SEP Vue), a dark crime drama based
on the true story of the Puccio family, whilst a similarly challenging offering is BRADY
CORBETs THE CHILDHOOD OF A LEADER (1622 SEP EC) adaptation of Jean-Paul
Sartres short story examining the upbringing of a fascist dictator-to-be feat. BENERICE
BEJO, LIAM CUNNINGHAM, STACY MARTIN, ROBERT PATTINSON, and a haunting score
by SCOTT WALKER. Indies of decidedly gentler bent can be found in charming-looking
Chelsea Flower Show melodrama DARE TO BE WILD (23 SEP Vue) and Love is Strange
director IRA SACHS emotive family tale LITTLE MEN (23 SEP Vue).
With autumnal climes approaching, the would-be Oscar contenders begin to emerge too
Most prominently, theres Gary Ross American Civil War drama THE FREE STATE OF JONES
[6] (09 SEP Vue). The subject matter and cast (MATTHEW MCONAUGHEY, KERI RUSSELL,
GUGU MBATHA-RAW, MAHERSHALA ALI) would indicate it might be in for statuettes early
next year, but a muted Stateside reception may suggest otherwise. BRYAN CRANSTON
could garner a second consecutive Oscar nomination for THE INFILTRATOR [7] (16 SEP
Vue), which sees him joined by AMY RYAN, JOHN LEGUIZAMO, DIANE KRUGER and JASON
ISAACS in the true story of the federal agent who infiltrated Pablo Escobars organisation.
Perhaps likely to be the biggest hit of the months true-story dramas is DEEPWATER
HORIZON [8] (30 SEP Vue), an old-school ensemble disaster movie based on the 2010 BP
Gulf of Mexico oil spill, which sees MARK WAHLBERG, KURT RUSSELL, JOHN MALKOVICH,
GINA RODRIGUEZ, KATE HUDSON, and DYLAN OBRIAN directed by PETER BERG.
The darker nights also herald horror films, including two exciting lo-fi Brit offerings ADAM
SCOTT (yes, Sir Ridleys son) makes his directorial debut with MORGAN [9] (02 SEP
Vue), a claustrophobic sci-fi chiller about an artificial human experiment that goes horribly
wrong, with a classy cast including KATE MARA, JENNIFER JASON LEIGH, TOBY JONES,
PAUL GIAMATTI and The Witchs ANYA TAYLOR-JOY; and THE GIRL WITH ALL THE GIFTS
[10] (23 SEP Vue), the much-discussed adaptation of M.R. Careys novel arrives, with
GLENN CLOSE, GEMMA ARTERTON, PADDY CONSIDINE and new-comer SENNIA NANUA
heading up this zombie apocalypse tale with a difference. Talking about low-budget
horror, the archetypal example of The Blair Witch Project finally gets a sequel this month
in ADAM WINGARD (Youre Next, The Guest)s BLAIR WITCH [11] (16 SEP Vue), an
enigmatic follow-up filmed in secret. Will it live up to the genre-redefining original? If that
isnt enough, then theres also taut teen-horror DONT BREATHE (09 SEP VUE).

FEATURES 169.indd 11

11

17/08/2016 12:17

If that all sounds a bit heavy, then fear not, there are a few laughs to be had as well.
RENE ZELWEGGERs iconic bachelorette is back in BRIDGET JONESS BABY [13] (16
SEP VUE), which sees her and a returning COLIN FIRTH joined by PATRICK DEMPSEY.
Meanwhile, TAIKA WAITITI, director of the hilarious What We Do In The Shadows, give us
THE HUNT FOR THE WILDERPEOPLE [3] (16 SEP VUE, 30 SEP-04 OCT EC), an already
acclaimed comic adventure with SAM NEILL and JULIAN DENNISON. Dont miss it.
There are still a few blockbuster hopefuls around from BEN-HUR (09 SEP Vue) a remake
the world was clearly crying out for to (a likely more worthwhile) THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN
[14] (23 SEP Vue), ANTOINE FUQUAs remake of the John Sturges classic, which should
overcome accusations of sacrilege with a seven that are pretty magnificent indeed DENZEL
WASHINGTON, ETHAN HAWKE, CHRIS PRATT, BYUNG HUN-LEE, MANUEL GARCIA-RULFO,
VINCENT DONFORIO, and MARTIN SEINSMEIER. TIM BURTON returns to our screens as well
with MISS PEREGRINES HOME FOR PECULIAR CHILDREN [12], a JANE GOLDMAN-penned
adaptation of RANSOM RIGGS fantasy novel, starring EVA GREEN, ASA BUTTERFIELD,
SAMUEL L JACKSON, CHRIS ODOWD, TERRENCE STAMP, ALLISON JANEY, and JUDI DENCH.
One of the months most talked about releases will be SAUSAGE PARTY (02 SEP @ Vue),
SETH ROGEN & JAMES FRANCOs animated raunch-fest you have be an adult to see but
a twelve-year-old to enjoy. Fans of more crafted animation will flock to Laika Animations
KUBO AND THE TWO STRINGS [15] (09 SEP Vue), the worlds first stop motion samurai
epic, with voices of CHARLIZE THERON, ROONEY MARA, MATTHEW MCONAUGHEY and
yay! GEORGE TAIKEI. Theres also a new iteration of SWALLOWS & AMAZONS (0915
SEP EC) and well-received remake PETES DRAGON (2425 SEP EC).

KIDS
Superheroes & Pirates
Scotlands most loved of kids entertainers, The Singing Kettle has evolved into FUNBOX
(sans Cilla but retaining Gary, Anya, Kevin and, of course, Bonzo the dog!). They come
to EDEN COURT on 17 & 18 SEP with a new show SUPERHEROES which finds the team
on a quest to find their keys and open the Funbox. Crime fighting Funster duo Fluffy
and Flossie will be back to help along the way and Bonzos alter ego, the mysterious
Dog in Pants, will deliver his own brand of doggy justice! With family singalongs like
Bunny Fou Fou, My Boys a Corker (Oom Pah Pah) and My Aunt Came Back along
with brand new songs and silliness, this will have the little uns positively giddy with
excitement. Come dressed as your favourite superhero or make up your own.
That same weekend, 17 & 18 SEP sees PIRATE SCHOOL at CULLODEN BATTLEFIELD,
an event that takes its inspiration from the fact that pirates, privateers and smugglers
all played their parts in the Jacobite uprisings. Bring along your little powder monkeys to
a weekend of family fun and let them find out whether they can pass Pirate School with
flying colours. Or will they have to walk the plank? Crafts, treasure trail and Jacobiterelated activities will all be on offer.
You and your kids will be running hither and thither on 17 SEP because theres yet
another event for your diary in the form of the INVERNESS CANAL MAGIC FESTIVAL
packed with activities on and off the water celebrating the Caledonian Canal. There will
be boat design and building competitions, live music, community interest stalls and
rowing races as well as short canal cruises. 11am-4.30pm.

MUSIC

Gaelic culture takes centre stage this month with the return of the annual BLAS
festival, taking place from 02-10 SEP. As always, concerts take place throughout
the Highlands, from village halls to larger venues, bringing together performers
not just from Scotland, but also further afield, notably Cape Breton with whom
were inextricably culturally linked. Familiar figures like PHIL CUNNINGHAM & ALY
BAIN, FEIS ROIS and MARY ANN KENNEDY [1] are appearing, but the highlight
for many will be the wonderful SHARON SHANNON [2] whos playing several
dates including PLOCKTON HIGH SCHOOL HALL on 08 SEP and the BLAS GRAND
FINALE at EDEN COURT on 10 SEP. See listings and our website for more.
Stirring sounds from even further afield come in the form of the SOWETO
SPIRITUAL SINGERS [3], who play EDEN COURT on 05 SEP. The 27-strong
ensemble make glorious acapella and instrumental music and have won fans
from all genres around the world, collaborating with R Kelly and performing to
billions at the World Cup opening ceremony in 2010.
If you want a bit of myth in your music, youll be heading to IRONWORKS on 17
SEP where you might get to hear whats hot in Westeros as KRISTIAN NAIRN,
aka Hodor from Game Of Thrones DJs at a night entitled, not entirely surprisingly
RAVE OF THRONES [4]. Expect much of the spirit of the cult show to be brought
to the venue, although perhaps not with quite as much bloodshed and nudity.
Equally highly regarded by many is ALBERT HAMMOND [5] who plays EDEN
COURT on 07 SEP. A bona fide musical legend, hes worked with Johnny Cash,
Roy Orbison, Neil Diamond, Julio Iglesias, Willie Nelson, Whitney Houston, Tina
Turner and many more as well as penning records that have sold over 360 million
copies. Not a bad CV.
Not quite as successful, but almost as enduring are NINE BELOW ZERO, the RnB
combo who emerged out of the punk scene and still attract a loyal army of fans.
Theyre playing a special acoustic set at EDEN COURT on 16 SEP.
If its stars of the future youre after, NEON WALTZ [6] are nailed on for that
accolade. The Caithness band are picking up on the post-punk spirit of the likes
of Echo & The Bunnymen and The Cure and reinventing the sound for the 21st
century with no little aplomb. This time next year theyll be deservedly massive so
their gig at WICK ACADEMY on 01 OCT should be both a celebratory homecoming
and a fond farewell before they go stratospheric.
This time of year is marked by many things, the most significant of which for
many is LOOPALLU. The Ullapool festival, taking place on 30 SEP & 01 OCT sells
out without even announcing whos playing, but its devotees are in for a treat
this year with FEEDER [7], THE SELECTER, MANRAN, THE WONDERSTUFF and
MARK RADCLIFFE all on the bill.
Finally, classical fans wont want to miss the RSNO at EDEN COURT on 14 SEP
and a performance of Mahlers 9th at ARDROSS COMMUNITY HALL on 21 SEP,
while Irish country acolytes will be whooping for NATHAN CARTER [8] at EDEN
COURT for four whole nights from 2326 SEP.

Festival Fun.
Therell be much excitement in Forres on 24 SEP when the town plays host
to CULTURE DAY 2016, a fun, free, family day out, jam-packed with exciting
exhibitions, performances, music, film, dance, talks and tours and lots of havea-go activities. Its the centrepiece of the spectacular six-day FINDHORN BAY
FESTIVAL running from 2126 SEP which provides a plethora of things to see and
do. Theres music from the likes of JULIE FOWLIS, ORKESTRA DEL SOL [1], DUKE
SPECIAL and JAMES YORKSTON, a trip on a vintage bus round hidden Moray on
The Trail Of The Real Macbeth, comedy from Mrs Barbara Nice [2] performed
by JANICE CONNOLLY (who played Holy Mary in Peter Kays Phoenix Nights) and
Mallory: Beyond Everest, a one man play written and performed by award winning
writer JOHN BURNS. Theres also award winning Musician MAIRI CAMPBELL [3]
presenting her new solo theatre show Pulse and much, much more. See our
listings for full details or the official festival site at findhornbayfestival.com
Talking of the real Macbeth, he was apparently holed up at CAWDOR CASTLE
and thats the venue for LIVING FOOD on 17 & 18 SEP. The Highlands original
food and drink festival with an emphasis on artisan, organic, local and sustainable
produce, its building on the success of last years event and lets you enjoy food
from local producers, plus local art and craft accompanied by music, drinks and
food and access to the amazing gardens at the Castle.
September sees several other events returning, all of which are bound to prove
popular. Over at FORT GEORGE from 0911 SEP its the HIGHLAND MILITARY
TATTOO, which should be as spectacular as ever and is given added resonance
this year with alarming rumours circulating about the future of Fort George itself.
More impressive feats at CARVE CARRBRIDGE on 03 SEP. Bringing together
numerous proponents of the art of turning tree trunks into jaw-dropping sculptures
using only chainsaws, you can not only watch the action, but also buy some of the
resulting creations. And even have a go yourself. Always a great day out.
Back in Inverness on 11 SEP its the annual KIRKING OF THE COUNCIL, a
tradition thats gone on for hundreds of years, while an equally enduring activity
is celebrated from 29 SEP02 OCT at the LOCH NESS KNITTING FESTIVAL taking
place at EDEN COURT. Theres a packed programme of crafty events with everything
from knitting themed exhibitions, lectures and film screenings to fashion shows
and workshops, capitalising on the fact that knitting has been taken up by a whole
new generation of enthusiasts. There will also be an opportunity for folk to get
involved before the festival itself as organisers plan to attempt a world record by
filling Dores beach with knitted Nessies in the run up to the event.

Ready to Run?
Biggest sporting event of the month has to be the BAXTERS LOCH NESS MARATHON
AND FESTIVAL OF RUNNING on 25 SEP. Now in its fifteenth year, its attracted top
runners from all over the world, ever since its first edition, won by Kenyas Eric
Kiplagat. Expect another top line-up this time round and, even more importantly,
mass public participation with over 8,000 people expected to take part across the
marathon, 10K, 5K and Wee Nessie races.
The route begins in an atmospheric location and continues through breathtaking
scenery, taking you along the south-eastern shores of Loch Ness, across the River
Ness, and into the centre of Inverness itself. Runners are taking on the challenge for
many reasons: to raise money for good causes, to have fun and enjoy the fantastic
setting, to experience the camaraderie, and to achieve their own personal goals. So,
even if youre not running yourself, make some time to head along and cheer the
competitors. Full details of the route are at lochnessmarathon.com
A run of considerably less distance but with some rather unique challenges comes in
the form of the PRIME FOUR BEAST RACE at ALDOURIE CASTLE, south of Inverness
on 03 SEP, an epic 10k obstacle race over rough terrain, dirt tracks and forest. More
details at beastrace.co.uk
Liverpool fans are split on the legacy of Brendan Rodgers. Some think he was
responsible for one of the most exciting seasons in the clubs recent history, even
if it ended in tantalising failure. Other grumble about him being out of his depth as a
top-flight boss. In many ways his recent appointment as manager of Celtic (the team
hes supported all his life) seems to be the perfect job for him and hell be hoping to
consolidate his teams start to the season when he brings the Bhoys north for ICT
V CELTIC on 18 SEP. While Inverness Caledonian Thistle have begun the campaign
rather shakily, theyll be looking at this match as an opportunity to set a marker for
the months ahead. And emphasise their reputation as Celtics bogey team.
Finally, shinty fans will be making a note in their diary that one of the most prestigious
events in the games calendar, the CAMANACHD CUP FINAL, takes place in FORT
WILLIAM on 17 SEP. The semi-finals are due to be contested at time of writing
a Highland match pitching Newtonmore against Kyles Kinlochshiel and a southern
showown with Lochaber playing Oban. Head to shinty.com after 20 Aug to find out
wholl be contesting the trophy

There are heaps of interesting looking productions at the FINDHORN BAY ARTS
FESTIVAL taking place from 2126 SEP. Highlights include folk dressed as fish
wandering around Forres and Findhorn on 24 & 25 SEP courtesy of Confluxs
physical art/street theatre production ANIMAL ANTICS [8], John Burns
MALLORY: BEYOND EVEREST [9] (25 SEP), Scottish Operas THE ELIXIR OF
LOVE [10] in Elgin (26 SEP) and Eden Court Creatives ALL I HAVE TO DO IS
DREAM (26 SEP) a groundbreaking piece of visual theatre, performed by a
cast of 50 adults with additional support needs and their support workers.
It follows a cleaner who after a long shift falls asleep on an empty stage. The
subsequent dreamscapes take a ride through a vivid collage of movement and
image, taking in the music of Bach, Sigur Rs and Tatsuhiko Asano.

THEATRE

Plenty of theatrical delights this month, but for many, the one thatll have the
most nostalgic impact is a little further on the horizon, THE BROONS [1] at EDEN
COURT from 0305 OCT. The first ever live-action version of the much-loved comic
strip, well be telling you more about it next month, but get your tickets now so
youre not disappointed.
As for this month, there are some splendid shows at EDEN COURT, kicking off
with THE END [2] on 05 SEP. Acclaimed Scottish choreographer Jack Webb and
a company of three exceptional dancers confront and explore the dramatic notion
of end points the end of the world, the end of life as we know it, the end of
good, bad and all in between. Extraordinary choreographic style and powerful
soundscapes combine for a startlingly thoughtful and compelling experience.
Set in London, but just as relevant up here is E15 [3] at EDEN COURT on 10 SEP.
With the slogan we want social housing, not social cleansing its a bold piece
of documentary theatre, adapted from the real-life testimonies of the most underrepresented and prominent voices on the political spectrum, looking at Britains
housing crisis and how one group of women refused to be marginalised.
More incisive politics come courtesy of the Scottish premiere of Michael Frayns
award-winning play DEMOCRACY (EC, 12 SEP). Produced by Rapture Theatre,
the company responsible for the recent excellent adaptations of All My Sons and
The Last Yankee, it stars, among a sterling cast, Taggarts COLIN MCCREDIE and
Brooksides NEIL CAPLE in a story set in the West German government of 1969.
House Of Cards meets The West Wing with shades of John Le Carr.
Its not all serious stuff though, as demonstrated by Rona Munros one-woman
comedy drama WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF A T JUNCTION [4] (EC, 20 SEP)
wherein four different characters and their driving travails are portrayed with
humour and skill. As with all MsFits productions, its bound to be rather good.
Equally adept at inducing laughs is SEANN WALSH [5], another of those standups who seems to be on every single TV show going, but who is actually far better
live. His One For The Road show at EC on 14 SEP is well worth your attention.
If youd rather be part of the entertainment yourself, head along for SING-ALONG-A GREASE [6] (09 SEP) be a T-bird or a Pink Lady, with a hosted vocal
warm-up, fun pack, hand jives, the lot. Fancy dress recommended.
Meanwhile, LENNON, THROUGH A GLASS ONION [7] (13 SEP) is a celebration of
the genius and music The Beatles favourite son performed by Daniel Taylor and
is part biography, part concert with over 30 songs to remember his talent by
And if you want something gloriously daft, you cant go wrong with SPAMALOT
at FLORIANS THEATRE from 0610 SEP. The Python musical provided a second
lease of life for the comedy troupe and this production should make for a fine
evenings entertainment as well as instilling an urge to go and check out the
Monty Python and The Holy Grail movie once more

Black Isle Bar & Rooms

68 Church Street, Inverness 01463 229920
Lets talk about pizza. A notion that
should see all right-thinking folk slip
into one of those drooling Homer
Simpson reveries, but therell be
widely differing images appearing in
the thought bubbles above myriad
heads. Of course, the Italians (arguably
along with their near neighbours in the
South of France) lay claim to having
invented the pizza in the first place and
therefore feel some sort of justification
in maintaining its integrity. According to
Associazione Vera Pizza Napoletana,
truly authentic pizza must be no
more than 35cm in diameter and no
thicker than a third of a centimetre
at its centre, rising to 2cm at the
crust, the tomatoes must be the San
Marzano variety grown in the fertile
soil at the base of Mount Vesuvius,
the oil must be extra virgin and the
cheese buffalo mozzarella and, most
importantly, the oven must be woodfired, and the pizza must cook in less
than two minutes.

Bar & Rooms in Church Street are

using that respect for ingredients as
a starting point. And, better still, they
have a wood fired oven meaning their
pizzas, as they proclaim, take just 90
seconds from dough to go!
Astonishingly, the pizza isnt the only
attraction thats ensured this place
has been packed ever since the day it
opened just a month ago. As its name
suggests, its the first official Inverness
base for the Black Isle Brewerys full
roster of ales, though its situated just
across the road from Hootananny, the
first place to offer a selection of that local
brewerys product. Like Hootananny, the
BIB&R is sited on a one-time charity
shop and takes up three floors, with
snazzy bunk-bedded rooms at affordable
prices on the first floor and a rather
lovely sheltered roof terrace dubbed The
Secret Garden topping things off.

for a naturally welcoming environment

to groups of all sizes, though one table
situated right by the constantly opening
door receives regular blasts of chilly
Inverness air and is perhaps the only
logistical failure in the design. The bar
itself is huge and needs to be since
there are 26 beers on tap and over 80
bottled craft brews for our delectation.
Such is the range on offer that theres
even an electronic display redolent of an
airline departures board with up-to-theminute details of everything available.

From that my pal chooses a pint of

Goldfinch 3.5% IPA, partly because
he loves the book of the same title by
Donna Tartt, partly because its glutenfree and partly because, as a real ale
aficionado he knows what he likes.
What he really would have liked was a
beer paddle with several samples on
it, something geeky ale fans apparently
adore, but the closest available to that

Neither beer (both of which are rather

lovely) is cheap and some of the ales
on offer come in north of a fiver, but
this isnt a place to prioritise quantity
over quality. While CAMRA might have
revealed this month that pubs are
closing at an alarming rate due to rising
prices, fans of craft ales respect the
costs involved and seem prepared to
pay appropriately, particularly in places
that obviously care about their product.
And that care applies to the food
too. Most of the salad, vegetables
and herbs on their pizzas and salads
come from the polytunnels on their
organic farm at the brewery a mere
six miles away, something that has to
be applauded. And its done for much
more than show as the food itself
demonstrates.
The menu is geared towards the pizzas,
but there are a couple of starters in
the form of bruschettas and garlic
bread. I go for a TOMATO & BASIL
BRUSCHETTA, more to see what its
like than out of any real hankering since
Im not normally much of a fan of raw
tomatoes. Its a pleasant surprise then
to find these far more packed with
flavour than anything youll find at your
local supermarket, turning the simplest
of creations into something memorable.

he describes as the best of all time. A

moot point, but hes certainly delighted
by it, the crispy base, tomato sauce
and top quality mozzarella perfectly
complementing the bold flavours of
the toppings of anchovies, capers, red
onions and black olives.
I have the HEBRIDEAN, the name
coming from the Hebridean lamb
meatballs that top the same trinity of
tomato sauce, basil and mozzarella. All
are used sparingly meaning the quality
of the base itself shines through just
as impressively. The best pizza in
Inverness? Yes, the best this reviewer
has had. And with all eight regulars
on the menu (plus a changing special
which on the day we visit is Provencal
Pork with Red Onion and Goats
Cheese) costing around a tenner,
remarkable value.

Its a great place and feels like the first

bar in Inverness to really hit the mark
with what the modern beer enthusiast
wants in a drinking hole. A diverse
clientele too, with the inevitable flavourof-the-month hipsters sporting their
bushy beard/sleeve tattoo/peaked
cap combos at one table, a pair of
ladies catching up on their news at
another and tourists regularly popping
in. Its also notable for being one of the
only places in town to welcome dogs,

the bar a chance to show again the A roaring success then and a place

would have to give it the thumbs up.
Price for 2: 31.70 (exc. drinks)
So to the pizzas themselves which,
perhaps because of the amount of
people in the bar take some time
in coming. Though obviously freshly
made theyre not piping hot by the time
we get to eat them, but that may be
because of the time we take admiring
and photographing them as well as the
fact that by their very nature, pizzas of
this ilk cool quickly.
