Course Description:
This course is an integrated one which means the teacher will teach all the skills together over 20 weekly contact hours. The student will be
introduced to the routines of the Vocational Training Centres so that students can make the most of the learning opportunities offered in this course.
Students will be taught grammar, vocabulary, research and communication skills.
Level Objectives
By the end of the course you will be able to
GRAMMAR (You will learn the following)

Recognize and appropriately use the past simple, past continuous, present perfect , comparative and superlative adjectives,
prepositions, present simple passive and past passive .

Demonstrate the ability to use preposition of directions such as up, down, over, past, through, out of, across, on the corner of, in
front of in giving directions to places.

Use adjectives ending in ed or ing to describe feelings and experiences.

Use adverbs such as still, only, of course, just, at last, exactly.

Use the first and second conditional.

Use the conjunctions (e.g. in spite of, despite, in case, unless, as long as.....etc.).

Demonstrate the ability to use relative clauses starting with relative pronouns (e.g. who, that, which, whose ,whom,...etc.).

Use quoted speech and reported speech (e.g. statements, commands and questions).

Use the phrasal verbs (e.g. .get up, break down, fill in .etc).

Demonstrate the ability to use idioms and idiomatic expressions..


LISTENING

Identify and extract expressions showing feelings, opinions, mood, and impressions.

Use pre-listening strategies to predict ideas on a given topic.

Listen to rubrics and analyse the questions to find out what information you are listening for.

Identify key information and make notes while and after listening.

Identify a range of vocabulary, idioms, colloquial expressions and technical terminology to handle most social or study situations
typical of a vocational training environment.

Identify sign post language (such as transitions) to understand speakers organization of ideas.

Discriminate between facts and opinions, emotional and logical ideas.

Listen to a live or recorded discourse and fill in different types of forms.

Listen to live broadcasts or recorded TV and radio programs and prepare spoken reports on the same.

Listen attentively to briefings in a workshop setting and respond appropriately.*


READING

Make inferences from various complex texts and ideas implicit in the text.

Draw conclusions from implicit and explicit ideas expressed in a reading passage.

Comprehend a wide variety of technical expressions.

Grasp the meaning of a text sufficiently to extract the relevant points and paraphrase or summarize the whole text, a specific idea
or the underlying idea.

Read and understand different calibrations, figures and types of drawings.

Read to find out and transfer factual details from (300-350) text into grids or charts.

Identify the authors purpose and tone.

Identify literary devices, such as parenthesis, footnotes and quotations.

Read between the lines to infer the unstated ideas that the author wants to depict.

Comprehend a wide variety of conceptual and symbolic language and high frequency idiomatic expressions.

Distinguish fact from opinion.

Demonstrate the ability to develop fluency and speed by regularly reading extensively outside the classroom. (e.g. intermediate
readers, medium length stories and novels ).
SPEAKING

Participate appropriately in routine conversations in a workshop context. (e.g. discussing safety precautions , standard operation
proceduresetc). *

Take part in formal telephone conversations asking for services or answering enquires.

Demonstrate the ability to take part in short formal meetings.

Prepare and deliver a clear and effective presentation on a familiar specialized topic, of about 10 minutes using appropriate audio
visual aids.

Evaluate peers' speech with regard to basic accuracy, intelligibility and appropriateness.

Prepare and conduct an effective structured and semi structured interview.

Take part in debates on familiar topics.


WRITING

Write formal e-mails and letters. (e.g. complaint, enquiry, request, job application ...etc).

Fill in application forms.

Write a classification essay of 5 paragraphs of 200-250 words with an introductory paragraph (including thesis statement), 3
body paragraphs (including topic sentences and supporting sentences) and a conclusion paragraph.

Write a problem/solution essay of 5 paragraphs of 200-250 words with an introductory paragraph (including a thesis
statement), 3 body paragraphs (including topic sentences and supporting sentences) and a conclusion paragraph.

Write an argument essay of 5 paragraphs of 200-250 words with an introductory paragraph (including thesis statement), 3
body paragraphs (including topic sentences and supporting sentences) and a conclusion paragraph.

Write a cause and effect essay of 5 paragraphs of 200-250 words with an introductory paragraph (including thesis statement),
3 body paragraphs (with a topic sentences and supporting sentences) and a conclusion paragraph.
LEARNING SKILLS

Prepare and implement an action plan specifying tasks to be executed towards the completion of an assignment.

Locate source materials in the library and on the Internet, evaluate their usefulness, relevancy and credibility in preparation
for an assignment and/or presentation.

Use a variety of technological and information resources (e.g. libraries, databases, websites, videos, etc.) to gather and
synthesize information.

Critically evaluate and respond to other peoples view perceptions.

Design and construct a survey to investigate a given subject or problem as part of an assignment or in preparation for a
presentation.

Demonstrate problem solving skills.


Textbook Used: Cutting Edge pre- intermediate, and supplementary materials for Technical and general English.
Materials Needed: Text and notebook, dictionary, files and binders for storage of teaching / learning materials, assessment records and
reference materials and activities .
Facilities Required: Classroom, audio visual aids, multimedia labs and Self Access Center.
Assessment Details:
1. The Continuous Assessment (course work) is allocated 50% of the cumulative grade. This is divided as follows: 2 progress tests (20%),
Mid-semester test (20%), and an oral exam (10%).
2. The final level exit exam is allocated 50%.
3. The Cumulative Grade is calculated as follows: Cumulative Grade (CG)= 50% Course Work + 50% Level Exit Exam (LEE) = 100%.
4. To pass a level, a student must pass both the Level Exit Exam and the Cumulative Grade. The pass grade is 50%.(For

Attendance: 1. Attendance is taken on a regular basis at the beginning of each class and absence is recorded for all the courses.
2. Please refer to the Bylaws of the Vocational Training Centres for details on the regulations

governing the attendance system in these institutions.


Participation: This course involves individual and group activities. To improve listening and speaking skills, students are encouraged to
participate and interact in class or group discussions.
