Why Rahane over Dhawan? Give logic NOT emotions.

NAV RATTAN SINGH ON JANUARY 21, 2017, 12:55 GMT

Let Rahane and Pandey open though it will be a bit unfair to the latter but
a game is better than no game at all. Also, rest Ashwin and give Misra a
chance. Since openers have not scored and Ashwin has been finding it
hard to get wickets, team will not be weakened by these changes.

@ HADESLOGIC, I agree with you about dhawan, but also that's the only
chance we would get to another player like manish some game time before
the CT. also if he does make a useless 50, India will then stick him in for
another 10 matches of single figure scores.
India need to beat England comprehensively and go into the CT with a
little more confindence, but I'm assuming it will be another close one
either team wining, because of the batting pitches.

No spinners = no win in short formats. Ali alone is not enough, and it's a
shame Rashid has not been up to standard. If only England had done more
when Swann hung up his boots. Also, Woakes should bowl his full ten at
the beginning. He's strong and fit enough to do this, and isn't in the team
for his batting so let him rip. Conversely, keep the ball away from Stokes
as much as possible and let him focus on batting and fielding.

Agree that they should play both Rahul and Dhawan esp the latter. If
Dhawan fails again, he shouldn't be played in the T20s. I'm not in favour of
Rahane playing any white ball cricket ahead of so many talented
youngsters, someone like Manish Pandey never gets a long run. Isn't
Pandey a good fielder too?
As for Rohit Sharma, good point that he should be made to prove his form
and fitness - there's still the Aussie series before the CT. I'm assuming he's
still not fit else they could have given him a game in the ongoing Guj v RoI
game. However, Rohit has an X factor where ODIs are concerned, you can't
brush away two ridiculous double hundreds as if it's no big deal and he
bats in a specialist position that isn't easy to fill.

Coming to the game, rahane should not be given any chance. He got 5
matches against new zealand and didn't capitalise. India should have
called pant and Jackson, both played well during warm up matches. Since
kohli loves changing teams, pandey can replace either of the openers and
kohli can open. playing an extra bowler is also not a bad idea.

and calls for his CT selection are put to bed. The T20s should also be seen
as a selection point for those who did not get a chance here (Pant etc.) as
there is not much difference in the approach to the two formats any
longer. And why does Rohit get to just walk into the CT squad? If he is
injured and out, he should show some performance before getting
selected. Else he will be touting excuses like rusty, no game time etc. to
cover his useless, selfish batting.

India need to strengthen their bowling to avoid being hit for over 350 runs
in 50 overs. Bumrah seems to lost his Yorkers whilst Hardik needs to focus
more on control in his length & direction. Kumar, Jadeja & Ashwin must
continue their economical bowling in order for India to have a winning
chance. Perhaps faster pitch at Kolkatta might give them little more help.
They also need to improve their opening batsmen whose failure has
caused poor start twice in both the ODI's so far. Rahane is the only other
available choice. Will Kohli go for the change remains to be seen. If the
opening stand carries them over 50, Indian batting gets more stable. With
a slightly green pitch, this appears to be less of a run fest. England have
again kept Bairstow out of the line up. It looks for the first time that a
below 300 may be a winning total. Good Luck to both the sides.

JMCILHINNEY ON JANUARY 21, 2017, 14:47 GMT
Bowling in limited-overs cricket is a tough job but the Indian seamers hit
their lengths much better than their England counterparts in game 2 and,
while the Indian spinners aren't exactly demolishing England, their ability
to contain and/or take wickets in the middle overs is a big reason for
India's latest win. I think that England need to address one or both of
those to have a chance in game 3. If Sam Billings replaces Alex Hales and
is still around for the second powerplay then he may be able to help with
at least the latter. Scoring some runs off Jadeja would be very helpful to
England's cause.

KL Rahul is embarking on one of the most difficult journeys in the modern

game: attempting to become a three-format international opener. His
talent is abundantly clear, given he has already made Test, ODI and T20
hundreds for India (the latter batting at No. 4), but his two innings in the
series so far have failed to reach double-figures. Rohit Sharma might be
favoured to return for the Champions Trophy after injury but Rahul would
prefer to make the selectors' decision a little trickier.
The focus is starkly on England's bowlers, after twice conceding 350-plus
totals and twice seeing the opposition recover from losing early wickets by
raising a double-century partnership. David Willey picked up both India
openers in Pune but he has been wicketless in five of his last six ODIs and
last bowled a full allocation of ten overs against Sri Lanka in June. His leftarm swing is perhaps a more valuable commodity in home conditions but
England need to work out how to best utilise him.

Eoin Morgan shellacked a half-century to make sure his team took a 1-0
lead in the three-match series.
Moeen's best, Morgan's 1500

2/21 Moeen Ali's figures, his best in T20Is. He was the only bowler
with an economy rate lower than six in the match. He also got his
third Man of the Match award in 20 T20Is.

73.50Joe Root's average when chasing in T20Is, the thirdbest among players with five or more innings. He averages only
29.33 when batting first.

12 Innings without a fifty for Eoin Morgan in T20Is, before scoring

one in this match. His last was 74 against Australia in Cardiff in
2015. He also completed 1500 T20I runs, the first England player
and 12th overall to do so.

2-9 India's win-loss record when defending targets of 150 or less

over 12 attempts. Their win-loss ratio of 0.22 is the worst among all
Full Members.

22 Runs that came in boundaries for India in their last 10 overs,

their second-lowest when batting first and playing out all 20 overs.

Tymal Mills, Chris Jordan, Liam Plunkett and Ben Stokes were given a brief
to bowl length and just short of it, while ensuring the batsmen do not
have room to use their pace to relieve the pressure. Moeen Ali was at his
restrictive best, picking up 2 for 21 in four overs, targeting the stumps
with flat darts and in the end the services of their specialist spinner Adil
Rashid was not even needed.
India, who had lost the toss and were put in, seemed rather obsessed with
power-hitting. They had gone through the entire World T20 playing proper
cricket, only to be brutally swept aside by West Indies in the semi-final.
From the moment Virat Kohli carved the third ball of the match for four
through point, it seemed like they were trying go for the boundary every
single ball. It did not pay off though, as England dashed a little bit of the
Republic Day celebrations at a jam-packed Green Park stadium in Kanpur.
Admittedly, it doesn't seem the worst strategy to leave your brain behind
as a batsman when playing T20. There's 10 wickets to negotiate 20 overs,
and while batting first, it even seems logical to do so. But India don't
normally play in this fashion and will need time to catch up with the rest
of the world. This evening, for example, they couldn't deal with how they
were bleeding wickets, at the worst possible times.
Kohli and KL Rahul, who opened the batting, fell within three overs of
each other on either side of the Powerplay. Suresh Raina, Yuvraj Singh and
Manish Pandey - Nos 3, 4 and 6 - dismissed within three overs as well,
between the 11th and the 14th. India couldn't lay a good enough

foundation at the start and were running out of batsmen by the end. No
one made it past a score of 36.
The key for England was in how well they read the pitch. It was both
grassy and cracked and lent itself to fast bowlers who were willing to hit
the deck and also experiment with cross-seamers and slower balls. Jordan
and Mills - who were playing their first matches on this tour - did exactly
that. Then Moeen, who began his spell having Kohli caught at short
midwicket for 29 off 26, excelled in the middle overs, bowling stump-tostump. His length was lovely as well, not full enough to drive freely and
not short enough that the batsman could use the pace. The end result, he
conceded only one boundary.
India had somehow mis-hit their way to 47 in the Powerplay, but once
England had the comfort of having five men on the boundary, the edges no
longer found gaps. They offered a mere 37 runs between the 13th and
19th overs. Moeen had created the pressure, the quicks came back,
knowing they will be targeted, but by varying their pace and banging the
ball into the pitch without the width to cut or pull, they gave India, who
were by now only trying to hit the ball as hard as they could, very few
options.
Hardik Pandya found that out when he was cramped by a a short ball
rising up to his shoulder and found deep point; Mills meanwhile had his
first T20I wicket. Rahul was caught unawares by a sharp bouncer from
Jordan in the fourth over, which he could only fend to short fine leg.
Yuvraj top-edged a pull to long leg off Plunkett and Raina was bowled by a
searing yorker from Stokes. Morgan's captaincy should be credited here,
forcing the two left-handers to deal with the kind of bowling they
generally dislike facing, and less so with an innings in jeopardy: fast and
at their bodies. Moeen played his part too, spinning the ball away or
making it skid on, rarely letting himself be lined up. MS Dhoni managed to
stick it out till the end, hitting a couple of fours in the last over, but 147
was nowhere near par.
It showed when Jason Roy and Sam Billings blitzed 36 in three overs at the
start of the chase. India did put a stop to the mayhem in the next over
with legspinner Yuzvendra Chahal, picked ahead of Amit Mishra, bowling
both batsmen. But it didn't matter in the larger scheme of things since
England managed to gun down a third of their target within the first six
overs. With that in the back of their minds, Joe Root, returning from a
niggle, and Morgan put on 83 runs for the third wicket and that
partnership was more than enough to seal a straightforward chase. A
further sign of how disappointing India's batting had been on the day was

debutant Parvez Rasool picking up the England captain for 51 and barely
celebrating. He knew it just didn't matter.

lso played 9 T20s and AGAIN not a single good innings. If in the past 2
years since ODI WC 2015, he has got 33 chances and not succeeded. I am
happy the management has put an end to his automatic selection.
Dhawan has 15 opportunities post 2015 WC. He had a match winning 75
against Bang, the only match India won that series. A 60 in the Mumbai
match against SA, vs Rahane 87 that India lost. In Aus ODI series he had
scores of 9,6,68,126,78. The 68 was slow, 126 was amazing though India
lost as could not make 70 in 11 overs with 6 wickets (despite Rahane), 78
was again excellent, a match India won. He has had two failures vs
England in this series
Team news

Reports said Shikhar Dhawan went to a hospital after landing in Kolkata on Friday to
get his left thumb checked. There were no injury concerns though and he was the
first to bat in the nets on Saturday. His form could be a worry, however, and Ajinkya
Rahane may get a look in if India want to change the opening combination. Manish
Pandey will be itching to get game time, too, but a packed middle order will not let
him through easily.
India: (probable) 1 KL Rahul, 2 Shikhar Dhawan/Ajinkya Rahane, 3 Virat Kohli (capt),
4 Yuvraj Singh, 5 MS Dhoni (wk), 6 Kedar Jadhav, 7 Hardik Pandya, 8 Ravindra
Jadeja, 9 R Ashwin, 10 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 11 Jasprit Bumrah
Sam Billings is likely to open, as he did in his previous appearance in Bangladesh,
due to Alex Hales' forced exclusion. Adil Rashid did not bowl much in the nets and
looks like missing consecutive white-ball internationals for the first time since his
return in 2015, if England persist with four quicks.
England: (probable) 1 Jason Roy, 2 Sam Billings, 3 Joe Root, 4 Eoin Morgan (capt), 5
Ben Stokes, 6 Jos Buttler, 7 Moeen Ali, 8 Chris Woakes, 9 Liam Plunkett, 10 David
Willey, 11 Jake Ball
Pitch and conditions

In the end, the British invasion never quite occurred. England came, they soared,
they were conquered. India don't need to take any lessons from Eoin Morgan's
young bucks, certainly in their own conditions, and were more clinical in the first
two matches to seal the series with one to play.
The final match in Kolkata will be India's last ODI before the Champions Trophy. Nos.
3-6 in the batting order all have centuries in this series but a couple of scores for
the openers would help Virat Kohli firm up plans for his first title tilt as captain. They
have won chasing and defending, though England pushed them hard both times.
Kohli will ask for more of the same as he looks to extend his mastery over England
captains to 7-0 on tour.
Morgan has twice said that England have not played at their best, which says
something about how expectation levels have risen. Scores of 350 for 7 and 366 for
8 will win plenty of 50-over matches but England's bowling has buckled too easily
under India's onslaught. England have not lost a series by a margin of more than
one match since the World Cup and Morgan will want to keep it that way.
Form guide

a good working relationship with Lyon but travels only sporadically with the team.
Australia have also called on England left-armer Monty Panesar to help them
prepare for the India series. Panesar has been playing club cricket in Sydney this
summer and is set to travel to the Centre of Excellence in Brisbane this week to
offer spin advice.

"And I guess if you're Virat Kohli, you'll actually be hoping that MS Dhoni does really
well and is able to hold on to his place. Because you would like that kind of
experience performing well in the team. Just that knowledge would be priceless for
Virat Kohli to have."
Although he found a clear distinction in the personalities of Dhoni and Virat Kohli,
who appears set to take over as captain in ODIs and T20Is, Prasad said the urge to
win for India was the same for both cricketers. "Dhoni never gave away anything in
terms of body language while Kohli has always been aggressive," Prasad said.
"What I have loved about Dhoni is that he will never give away anything as to what
is going on in his mind. That's his personality. He can keep things submerged in him.
"But deep down, both Dhoni and Kohli's urge to win matches for India is equal.
There is no letdown in intensity."

"What else was there for him to achieve? Most number of Test wins for India,
number 1 ranking in Test cricket, T20 World Cup, Champions Trophy, the World Cup,
most number of wins as one-day captain. I'm not great at stats but he must be at
the top of every statistical list on what an Indian captain has achieved," Dravid said.
"History will remember him as India's most successful captain. And someone who
really, in his time as an Indian captain, took the team and the game forward in this
country."

In the spotlight

The last ODI at Eden Gardens witnessed Rohit Sharma's record 264. This time,
though, it could be the only hope for pace bowlers to get purchase in this series.
The Ranji season saw teams shot out for 59, 81, 90 and several sub-200 scores. On
Saturday, the pitch wore a greener look than the one in Cuttack and bowlers will
hope they are not plundered for over 700 runs again.
Stats and trivia

England have played three one-day internationals at Eden Gardens and lost
them all. Their last visit, for the World T20 final, also ended in defeat.

In Cuttack, MS Dhoni became the fifth batsman to score 9000 ODI runs for
India (he also has 174 for the Asia XI).

Yuvraj Singh went almost six years between his 13th and 14th tons - his
previous hundred came at the 2011 World Cup.

During his 104 in Cuttack, Eoin Morgan went past Marcus Trescothick to
become England's fifth-highest run-scorer. Kevin Pietersen is next on the list,
only 16 runs ahead.

Quotes

"There is no pressure on us that the series has been won. But when you play
international cricket you want to win each and every match. One thing is that we
will enjoy the match more because the pressure is not there."
Bhuvneshwar Kumar was not worried about Sunday's contest
"He's a fiery batsman, he's an awesome player. If he gets the role of No. 2, that'll be
great. He's a great guy to bat with - runs hard, plays strong shots and that's exactly
what we look for at the top of the order, just to set the tone."
Jason Roy is pumped about the prospect of batting with Billings

"There is no hard-and-fast rule of understanding the game over a number of games.

You can get a great understanding of the game after 10 one-dayers; it doesn't have
to be 60, 70, 80. The sooner you learn the team benefits from it. This was another
case of the same thing: all the 11 guys believing that we can win from any situation.
Dravid, whose decision to resign from the captaincy in 2007 paved the way for
Dhoni to take over, said it would take Dhoni some time to get used to playing under
someone else, but didn't think it would be a major issue.

Kohli was not oblivious to his team's profligate bowling in the back-end that saw 115
runs conceded in the last 10 overs. "There was a bit of consistency issue in the last
15 overs as bowlers," he said. "We had done well up to the first 35 overs, but were a
little wayward in the last 15. We will address it and try to improve in the next
game."
Sridharan Sriram, the former India left-arm spinning allrounder, will mentor
Australia's legion of slow bowlers on their upcoming Test tour of India. Sriram has
worked with Australia's spinners on previous occasions, including on last year's tour
of Sri Lanka and in the World Twenty20 in India earlier in 2016, and he was also
engaged for the tour of Bangladesh that was ultimately postponed.
Sriram will travel with the squad to Dubai on January 29 for their training camp at
the ICC Academy, and will then work with the side through the four-Test tour that
follows. Australia have picked four specialist spinners for the series - Nathan Lyon,

Steve O'Keefe, Ashton Agar and Mitchell Swepson - as well as spinning allrounder
Glenn Maxwell.

Monty Panesar has been recruited by Cricket Australia as a spin-bowling consultant

for their tour of India next month, after spending his winter as a club cricketer in
Sydney.
Panesar, 34, played an integral role in England's memorable series win in India in
2012-13, claiming 17 wickets with his left-arm spin in the final three Tests to help
engineer a come-from-behind triumph.
However, he made the last of his 50 Test appearances at Melbourne during the
2013-14 Ashes, and was not considered for selection for England's recent 4-0 defeat
in India, despite making a return to first-class cricket for Northamptonshire last
summer following a spate of well-documented personal issues.
Panesar's recruitment to Australia's ranks came at the behest of Pat Howard, Cricket
Australia's high performance manager, whose team were whitewashed 4-0 on their
last tour to India four years ago, and recently succumbed to a 3-0 loss in similarly
spin-friendly conditions in Sri Lanka.
According to the Australian, Panesar will travel to the Centre of Excellence this week
to work with left-arm spinner Steve O'Keefe, as well as Matt Renshaw, the opening
batsman who was cleared of concussion on Sunday, following the incident that led
to his withdrawal from action during the third Test against Pakistan.
"Having Monty come up is a nice way to kickstart the squad's thinking about playing
in India," Howard told the newspaper. "We want the batsmen to be thinking about
what the bowlers will be trying to do to them over there and Monty can engage
them that way as well as with the bowlers.
"Phil Jaques will run the sessions with Matt, Monty and SOK, Phil has some nice
ideas about how to challenge the batsmen," Howard added. "In Australia we love
big turners, but the successful bowlers like [Rangana] Herath and [Ravi] Ashwin are
more likely to get you lbw or bowled than any other way, their accuracy and their
length is absolutely outstanding."
Panesar was one of nine wickets for O'Keefe during their ongoing Grade match
between Manly and Campbelltown Camden at the weekend.
"He was brilliant on the weekend and must think cricket is an easy game after
taking 9 for 54," Panesar said.

the guys on the same thing - If you are focused on the goal, the target you want to
achieve, you don't necessarily need to think too much about the game - in terms of
your personal runs or where you stand at the game," he said.
"Sri has worked with us on a number of occasions now all across our pathway
system and he is currently in Dubai with our Under-16 team providing his expertise
on sub-continental conditions," Pat Howard, Cricket Australia's executive general
manager of team performance, said.
"He knows our players very well and has a wealth of knowledge on the conditions
that our players will face in India."

limited overs cricket.
Rahane should not be even in the 15/16 in limited overs cricket with Kedar,
Karun, Manish, Rishabh and hopefully more players coming through in the
IPL.
Rahane is a wonderful Test batsman and would do well to concentrate on
that along with Murali Vijay and Pujara. I wish him good luck at IPL but not
keen to see him selected for India limited overs teams.

This is for all Rahane fans. The last good innings in LIMITED OVERS for
India Rahane played was a 79 in 60 balls against South Africa in the 2015
WC. Ever since he has played 24 ODIs and not a single great match
winning innings. Mumbai 87(58) against SA was good but India lost by 200
runs.

Kohli himself made a 105-ball 122 to fire up India's pursuit of 351, but was for once
outscored and overshadowed in a partnership.
"I think it was outstanding, just to have another guy that was willing to believe we
can win from any situation was such a boost for me as well. If you want to give one
man credit, it is Kedar Jadhav," Kohli said after the match. "They had four quick
bowlers and he really tackled all of them really well. He put a lot of pressure on the
spinners so they couldn't come back into the game. I couldn't believe some of the
shots he played. He told me it was instinctive, but such was his talent."
When Jadhav joined Kohli in the 12th over, India were four down for 63 and had lost
Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni. But Jadhav's shot-making instantly took the pressure off
Kohli - he was unruffled by the short balls and executed the pull, one of his most
productive shots, effortlessly, and countered the spinners with lofted drives. With
Kohli at the other end, there were plenty of quick singles and doubles during their
200-run alliance in just 147 balls. Kohli called it one of the best partnerships he had
been involved in.

"Striking at 150 was outstanding and all clean shots; he didn't slog the ball once,"
Kohli said in praise. "He was brilliant and that's why we back him to play at No. 6. I
think it was one of the best partnerships I've been part of. I think the best thing that
came out was to counter-attack. I don't think any of the wickets we lost was
because of good balls; we committed errors.
"Kedar and I had a gut feel. We thought if we get the score past 150-160 together
still with four down, we had a great chance. The pitch was even better to bat on in
the second innings. The ball travels very fast here. We could hit sixes to put that
pressure every now and then on the opposition. We chased 350 a couple of times
before but not from 63 for 4. This is something really special and will stay with me
for a long time."

MSK Prasad, India's chairman of selectors, said that MS Dhoni's decision to step
down as India's limited-overs captain came at the right time and showed Dhoni had
the best interests of the team in his mind.
"Had Mahi [Dhoni] taken the decision one year or even six months earlier, I would
have been a bit worried," Prasad told PTI. "But I salute him for his sense of perfect
timing. He knew that Virat [Kohli] is now a proven customer who has done
exceptionally well as a leader in Tests.
"So it is a correct decision by Dhoni. It showed that he had the best interest of
Indian cricket in his mind."

"Indian captaincy, there can be a lot happening around in Indian cricket - emotions
can go up and down," Dravid said. "For me, he was able to maintain a calm and a
balance through all of it, which was his unique ability and his unique strength. And I
think Indian cricket benefited a lot from that."
History, Dravid said, would remember Dhoni as India's most successful captain.

"I don't think it's very difficult," Dravid said. "From personal experience as well, it
takes a little bit of getting used to and adjusting - of not setting the field and not
running things - but I think you get used to it. And Dhoni spent a lot of time as a
player and not having captained before he started captaining in 2007. So I don't
think it should take him too much time to get used to it. And knowing the kind of
person he is and the personality he is, I don't see it as too much of a problem."

Dhawan and KL Rahul both are under pressure to perform, as there are
many talented players in the queue to open for India. If tomorrow Dhawan
is not selected for the match, he must go back and practice more on
technique and then can make comeback. He is not worth to be in the
squad in the champions trophy, there are many talented players waiting in
line.

i think we should give one more chance to dhawan next match.. but i think
given kohli's nature of tinkering the X1 every mach.. rahane may get a
look-in. kohli should also be pro-active in rotating bowlers. It is difficult to
bowl 5 consecutive overs from 41-50 for any bowler. so it will be better if
he keeps 3 overs for bhuvi in the end, dont stretch him too much.

I don't think koli might not change the squard, if he does he will replace
b.kumar for u.yadav and tell we want more pace.we want to feel for
pandey, but he is the pure batsman that's why he was not chosen.doni
makes jadav as a alrounder in last series otherwise koli would have gone
for pandey.jadav is more suitable for that spot.if pandey, considered to
play koli had to drop dawan, but he will not do that tomorrow,if he does
that that would be great.

Before criticizing Dhawan, how can forget his stellar performance in
Champion trophy 2013? He was MoS then. Too much credit is given to
Kohli forgetting his performance other than Asia,Aus is below par. Its
players like Dhawan,Rahane,Dhoni who would win us matches there. When
will we understand players like Rahane,Dhawan are too good for away
matches but not in Ind? There should be some juggling giving chances to
Pandey,Pant etc. Has anyone observed how Dhaw,KL,Dhoni ,Yuvi got out in
1st ODI and KL,Dhaw,Kohli in 2nd? Its same old way they get out. Dhaw
gets out like Raina .Yuvi on leg side with keeper etc.

India's biggest bench strength is Jaddu's batting. Kohli should gear that by
promoting Jadeja to 4 and by giving him proper batting chance. India

The sub headline said '' England bowlers are under pressure''. This is just
an understatement. Which side bowlers were not under pressure? Both 50
over matches scoring around 350, one would not be incorrect to say
bowlers on both sides were taken to the cleaners, the reasons we all know
although they are not totally bowlers' fault, just like a hit & giggle show
whichever side just is able to push the nose head will win. It has not been
a decent affair between bat & ball so far.

This should be a proper sub-300 score-ODI after all the hiding in the first
two ODIs. Not because of the pitch, but because mistimed slogs will NOT
clear the fence, especially with long square boundaries. That said, this
pitch and ground is ideal to suit Kohli's batting style. Flick the ball
towards midwicket with soft hands, or wristily whip it past the cover

fielder and run two easy runs. Would like to see batsmen working hard for
their runs, for once this series. Oh, and i wouldn't be misled by the green
yet, it is probably only to hold the pitch together.
