Summary of experience
I have 30 years experience in both the construction industry and academia from the United Kingdom, Malaysia, and
New Zealand. My construction industry experience is in construction project management, construction contracts
consultancy, dispute resolution, quantity surveying, and commercial management. My academic experience
includes teaching and supervising students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
Academic and professional qualifications
I have academic and professional qualifications from the UK, Malaysia, and New Zealand. I have a Bachelors
degree in Quantity Surveying, two Masters degrees one in Architecture majoring in Building Economics and
Management, and the other in Construction Law and Arbitration, and a PhD in Civil Engineering. The title of my
thesis was: Statutory Construction Adjudication Analysis of the New Zealand and Malaysian Legislations.
Current teaching at Massey University
I supervise students doing the Construction Research and Report paper at Bachelors and Masters levels and one
PhD student. I developed, as a team, and am now programme leader on New Zealands first Master of
Construction degree with a construction law specialization. I coordinate and teach the following papers:
Masters level: 218.763 Construction Law I, 218.764 Construction Law 2, 218.765 Construction Adjudication,
218.780 Construction Commercial Management
Bachelors level: 218.211 Construction Economics and Estimating, 218.311 Construction Contracts and
Financial Administration, 218.315 Construction Law
Research interests
My research and professional interests are in construction law, construction contracts, drafting contracts,
professional negligence, alternative dispute resolution including arbitration, adjudication, and mediation,
construction project management, procurement, and aspects of quantity surveying and commercial management.
Among the specific areas of research include studying various legislation in commonwealth jurisdictions governing
payment and adjudication in the construction industry including the New Zealand Construction Contracts Act 2002
and the Malaysian Construction Industry Payment and Adjudication Act 2012. I am also working on increasing
efficiency in adjudication by developing a web-based e-adjudication system.
I am also doing research on increasing efficiency by drafting construction contracts in modern plain language. I
authored the Model Terms of Construction Contract for Subcontract Work that was endorsed by 15 construction
related bodies in Malaysia. I also authored the Standard Terms of Construction Contract for Renovation and Small
Projects [STCC-RSP 2015] facilitated by the Construction Development Board Malaysia. It is the first construction
contract in the world to be accredited with the Clear English Standard by the Plain Language Commission, UK.
Continuing professional development
I keep up-to-date with new industry developments in my area and share my views on them. See for example my
submission to the New Zealand Commerce Select Committee on some of the proposals in the then Construction
Contracts Amendment Bill 2013 here:
