Kim
I chose this image of
beans because Kims
father used to be a farmer
before he died. Kim wants
her fathers spirit to
remember her, so she
plants lima beans.

I had to keep my project

safe (2).
Kims tone seems like she
very determined to keep
her project safe and plant
the beans for her father.
She also seems like she is
secretive about the project
because she is not telling
anyone.

I can connect myself to

Kim because my
grandpa died before I
was born and I never
knew him, just like Kime
and her dad. But instead
of planting beans for
her father, every time
we visit our family in
Mississippi, we visit his
grave.

Ana
I chose this picture of
binoculars because Ana
is curious and wants to
spy on Kim, so she buys
a pair of binoculars.
I also chose this picture
of an apartment
window because Ana
was old and unable to
go places do she
observes the things
outside of her
apartment window.

Ive see history through

this window (4).
I think Ana is very
observant because later in
the chapter, she says that
she has lived there very
long and she had no
entertainment so she
watched out the window.
I just about knew what
shed buried. Drugs most
likely, or or money, or a
gun (6).
I think Ana also seems
judgemental because she
didnt hesitate on what she
thought was true. Just
because it wasnt a
good/safe neighborhood
doesnt mean you have to
judge people.

I think the theme of this

chapter is to not judge
people. In this chapter,
Ana judged Kim and
thought she was burying
drugs, money or a gun
just because she saw bad
things like that in the
past.

Wendell
I chose the colors blue
and for courage
because Wendell had a
lot of courage to to
move on accepting that
his son and his wife are
dead. I also chose the
color green because he
also has a lot of hope
for the garden.

But a patch of ground in

that trashy lot - I can
change that. Can change
it big. Better to put my
time into that than
moaning about the other
all day (12).
I chose this citation
because I think Wendell
had hope to do a great
thing and make a
difference, rather to dread
about his family.

I think the theme or a

lesson we can learn is
to about this chapter is
to make a difference or
do something good in
the world. Wendell
noticed that even if he
couldnt do certain
things, like bring his
family back to life, he
could make a
difference.

Gonzalo
I think the colors that
matches this chapter the
most, is red and yellow. I
chose red because in the
beginning of the book, he
seemed kind of angry and
annoyed at Tio Juan because
Gonzalo had to babysit him
all the time. I chose yellow
because he was very
surprised and amazed how
Tio Juan planted the seeds
very efficiently and how he
communicated with Wendell
without even talking.

I realized that I didnt know

anything about growing food and
he knew everything (17).
I think Gonzalo was definitely
amazed by Tio Juan on how he
didnt even know how the speak
English but he still managed to
communicate with Wendell with
hand gestures.
Hed changed from a baby back
into a man (17).
In the beginning of the chapter, Tio
Juan would wander off and and act
like toddler because he was new to
the language and everything
around him. But Gonzalo soon saw
how he was very good at what he
did before he was introduced to
America.

I can connect this to a

few of my friends to
Gonzalo because they
have younger siblings
that they have to babysit
and take care of them all
of the time, and they
think really frustrating to
have to watch them all of
the time, just like
Gonzalo having to watch
Tio Juan.

Leona
I chose this picture of
goldenrod because Leonas
grandmother would always
drink goldenrod tea even
though her doctors told her
not to. But every time they
told her, they would die
soon after. But after
Leonas grandmother
passed away, she told
herself that she would plant
goldenrod for her when she
saw the garden that
everyone else was planting.

Looking at it, I knew

this wasnt a job for no
wheelbarrow. This was a
job for the telephone
(20).
I think that this was
irony because I thought
that she would help
clean the trash up, but
instead she used the
telephone to help with
the garden.

I think I can compare

Leonas problem to an
episode of Stuck in the
Middle. During the show,
she was making tons of
phone calls to different
companies and giving
them feedback in return
for the stuff that they
were selling. But instead
of not getting what she
wanted and having to go
to the Health
Department, the
companies demanded to
get their products back.

Sam

Para

dise

For this this chapter, I

chose the word,
paradise. I chose this
word because in the
beginning of the books,
he describes the garden
as paradise. He also
describes the garden as
beautiful. Later on, he
suddenly says that he
wanted a garden because
of what he saw.

With a few exceptions, the

blacks on one side, the whites
on another, the Central
Americans and Asians toward
the back. The garden was a
copy of the neighborhood. I
guess I shouldnt have been
suprised (26).
I think that Sam was very upset
about how the garden was soon
turning into the neighborhood,
with all of the people separated.
I think he was upset because he
wanted the garden to be a place
where everyone in the
neighborhood can come
together and be friendly, not
separated like they usually are.

I can compare Sam to

Ana because they are
both unable to do a lot
of things but, like plant
the garden, but they find
a way to do it. Sam hired
a boy to plant them for
him, and Ana wanted
Wendell to help her
water Kims plants. They
both found a way to
help make a difference in
the community even if
they werent able to.

Virgil
I chose this picture of a
locket because Virgil finds
this locket when he was
digging in the garden
before he angrily stomped
outside, away from his
father. The locket looked
just like the goddess of
crops and earth, so he
whispered to the locket
and said save our crops.

In our book, the goddess of

crops and the Earth had a sad
mouth and flowers around
her, just like the girl in the
locket. [...] Then I opened it,
just a crack. Then I whispered,
Save our lettuce, to the girl
(35).
I think Virgil was kind of
desperate when he that the
locket because soon after he
stomped away from his
father, he felt a little sorry for
him.

I think I can connect

Virgil to myself and a lot
of other people. The
reason I think this is
because Virgil get very
mad and furious at his
father. When I get mad at
one of my parents, I
usually mess something
up and feel really bad for
what I did. That is what
Virgil did. He felt bad
that he got mad at his
father, but his lettuce
dies.

Sae Young
I chose the symbol of a broken
heart because Sae Young was
very heartbroken in the
beginning of the book when her
husband died from a heart
attack, then she got robbed in
her dry cleaning shop. After that,
she no longer liked to be around
people. She was always afraid of
everyone and never went out of
her apartment. She didnt trust
anyone after that. But towards
the end of the book she started
to gain hope and a lot more
confidence after she saw the
garden.

When I wake up, I no more like to be

with people, like before. Afraid of
everyone, all the time (37).
I think Sae Young was very, very sad,
but mostly scared and hurt. She used to
love being around people, but no she
lost her confidence in being around
people and all of her happiness.
First time that someone talk to me. I
was so glad, have trouble talking
(38).
Sae Youngs tone was very happy. She
hasnt talked to anyone in 2 years but
today she felt safe again. She felt fafe
around people again knowing that
good people in the world are
surrounding her right now. She is
gaining confidence to be around people
again. She is happy.

I can compare Sae Young

to Wendell because both
of their family's dies, and
they both took awhile to
get over it, but when they
discover the garden. They
noticed that there was
hope in the garden.

Curtis
I chose the symbol of
muscles because Curtis
keeps bragging on and
on about how he has an
awesome body, and how
girls obsess over him.
Later in the chapter, this
does not benefit him in
any way. Lateesha soon
becomes sick of his
actions around girls, so
they break up.

You dont know what you got till its

gone (41).
I chose this quote because I think it
shows how much Curtis cared about
Lateesha, but but couldnt help but get
the girls along the way. I think he felt
ashamed and of his actions, and that he
took things for granted too much. I also
think he felt rejected even though he
deserved it and he knew what he did
was bad.
I was showing Lateesha that just cause I
got muscles doesnt mean Im a jungle
beast. I stopped working out and
stopped going out with no shirt, no
matter how hot it was (43).
I think this quote shows that Curtis was
dedicated he was to get Lateesha back.

I think I can compare Curtis

to myself and a lot of other
people. Sometimes I get
mad at my sister and decide
not to talk to her for a
while. When I need
something from her or need
her to help me with
something, that is no longer
an option, since I am not
talking to her. I think the
theme of this chapter is to
never take something for
granted. Always be thankful
for what you have, because
someday it might not be
there anymore.

Nora
I chose this picture of
wheelchair because
Nora kind of discovers
the garden because of
the wheelchair in a way.
Nora is care taking a
man named Mr. Myles,
who cant talk. She tries
to take him on a walk
everyday in his
wheelchair. They
discover the garden
while they are on a walk.

We, like our seeds, were

now planted in the
garden (50).
In the beginning of the
chapter, Nora thought Mr.
Myles was very a very
mysterious man. After
they discovered the
garden, and actually
started working and
planting stuff in it, they
soon found a connection
between them. Nora
finally new more about
Mr. Myles just because of
a simple garden.

I think I can connect

Nora to Sae Young.
After Nora takes part
in the garden, she
finds Mr. Myles
emotions and
personality. When Sae
Young took part in the
garden, she discovered
new personalities in
the people that were
around her.

Maricela
I chose the color red
because in the beginning
of the chapter, Maricella
was very annoyed and
mad. She couldnt take
how being pregnant
made her fat and how
she had to go to the
program. I think just
didnt want to be
bothered, and doesnt
really want to go on
with her life.

Not only was she mad at

the fact that she was
pregnant, but she was
also kind of mad at her
parents. In the middle of
the chapter, she says,
Then they got sort of
excited about it. They
both love little babies.
Not me. They started
praying for it every
night, while I was
begging my body to
miscarry (53).

I think I can compare Virgil to

Maricella a little bit. The reason I
think this is because Gonzalo and
Maricella both were mad at
something in the beginning of
their chapters, but towards the
end, they saw that it wasnt so
bad after all. Maricella was furious
that she was pregnant, but at the
end of the chapter, she realizes
that it isnt so bad. She was
amazed how she was part of this
cycle of life in nature. Gonzalo
was very annoyed because he had
to babysit Tio Juan like he was a
child, but after Tio Juan took part
in the garden, Gonzalo was
amazed at what he could do.

Amir
I chose this image of an
eggplant because Amirs
excuse for talking to
people in the garden.
Amir was amazed by
how all of the
immigrants and the
people are coming
together to plant the
garden.He loved talking
to the people about his
eggplants and how to
plant their plants.

I feel, was not the relief

to the eyes, but to make
the eyes see our
neighbors (59).
I think this quote means
that it is a great feeling
to see our neighbors
coming together to plant
this amazing garden.

I think I can connect

Amirs chapter to Sams
chapter because they are
both amazed to see
these people and
immigrants come
together. I also think
that they both enjoy
seeing these people
conversing something
that they would have
never talked about
before if it werent for
the garden.

Florence
I chose the color green
because Florence talks a
lot about her childhood
and where she came from.
The color green id for
youth and life. Florence is
also a very calm person.
She wanted to take part
in the garden but she was
too old, so she was a
watcher. She loved the
garden. She watched it all
the time.

When I did get out, I

couldnt go past the
garden without slowing
down to look, even
thought there was
nothing growing (68).
I think Florence loved her
garden like it was her one.
She loved watching it
grow and develop. She
hated when it was winter,
and she had to wait for
spring to come around so
she could watch the
garden grow.

I can connect Florence

to Ana because they
both were watchers. I
think Florence expressed
how much she loved the
garden more. Ana was
also a watcher, but she
liked watching the
people. She observed
what they were doing
and what they were
planting.
