We may be inclined to think of Jesus life as a series of
isolated events: His birth, His time at the Temple when
He was twelve, then His miracles and interaction with
people, His death, resurrection, and ascension, and
ultimate return. One of the benefits of observing some
aspect of the Christian Year is that it can help us put
things into a little better perspective. For example, this
coming Thursday, February 2nd, is exactly forty days
since Christmas Day. We read in Scripture that Mary
and Joseph took their six week old baby, Jesus, to the
Temple, which was in accordance with Jewish Law in
order for Marys purification and the redemption of their
first-born son. This is when Simeon recognized the
Messiah and sang those beautiful words, Lord, now let
thy servant depart in peace, for mine eyes have seen thy
salvation All of this occurred right under the nose of
King Herod! This same Jesus, though unseen, is present
with us in worship this morning. Through the power of
the Holy Spirit, He offers our worship to the Father. One
of the great glories of Christianity is the wedding and
melding of time on earth into timeless eternity as we
worship. Our opening hymn pulls all of this together.
