BTT 101 - E-Commerce

Culminating Activity Task #1

You have recently decided to launch your own E-Commerce business in which you will sell
products and/or services to customers via a website that you will develop later in the course.
Your first task is to develop a Name for your company and have some rough idea of what types of
products and/or services you will be selling. Please check both these elements out with your teacher
prior to proceeding any further. At this time, you may also want to consider a Logo and Slogan for
your company.
Your startup capital of $5,000 is to be used to purchase IT equipment, furniture, etc. that you will
need to get started. Your ultimate goal is to complete all of the culminating tasks (#1-7) in order to
help you secure a $100,000 loan from the ABC Banking Company.
Notes:
You will be required to present your entire project to the class using PowerPoint at the end of the
year.
Good Luck and Have Fun!
Please fill in the information below and submit it to your teacher:

Task #1
Setting Up Your Office Space
You have been able to secure a small ofice (20 x 20) in the downtown part of Burlington (see
diagram below). Given that your parents know the owner of the building, she has agreed to lease
the space to you for free for the first year. However this space will cost you $2500/month for your
second year.
Therefore, with the $5000 startup capital you have, you must equip and furnish your new office space
with at least one computer and some appropriate furniture
(e.g. desk(s), chair(s), lamps, etc.).
Notes:
1. You should consider the peripheral equipment (i.e. printer, web cam, microphone,
scanner, fax, digital camera, digital camcorder, fax machine, photocopier, etc.) that you
will need for your business when deciding on how to spend your $5000 in startup capital.
2. You should also consider any and all software applications (e.g. MS Word, MS Excel, etc.) that
you will need in order to run your business especially if
it doesnt come with the computer(s) you buy.
3. When purchasing your furniture (i.e. desks, chairs, lamps, etc.) be sure to consider ergonomics
when making your choices.
4. There is no need to buy a cash register since you are an e-commerce business.
5. There is no need to spend any money on decorating your office space since it will primarily be
used by yourselves only and will not be accessible to the general public.
6. There is no need to furnish the storage room or washroom!
Note: You must indicate how you plan to configure or set up your computer(s)
and/or peripheral devices (i.e. Stand-alone, LAN, WAN, etc.) Required Elements:
1. You and must prepare a picture, which illustrates how your ofice will be set up and furnished. It
must include a
diagram of how your office will be set up and of each piece of equipment and furniture that you
purchased.
Note: Beside each picture you must identify the following:
a. What it is?
b. Where you purchased it?
c. How much you paid for it?
2. You must fill in Computer Spec Sheet (see attached) that explains the appropriate technical
aspects of your computer(s).
3. You must prepare a one-page typewritten summary, which explains why you decided to
purchase the items you did and/or why you set up your office space as you did.
Some General Rules/Guidelines
All items (i.e. computer, peripheral equipment, furniture, etc.) you purchase must be
purchased from a Canadian company using Canadian dollars.
You may go on-line to purchase your items but you must print a picture of the item your
purchase so that you can put it on your office picture.
Be sure to remember where you got your items and how much you paid for them.
To make it easier for the teams, we have decided to make all items you purchase TAX
FREE. That is, when calculating the total costs, ignore taxes all together.
You may take advantage of any and all rebates (instant, mail-in, etc) in an effort to save
yourselves some money, however you must attach some proof of this rebate to your
picture.

Culminating Activity Task #2

ow that you have decided to launch your own E-Commerce business, you will
need to begin to secure a much needed $100,000 loan from the ABC Banking
Company. This loan is essential to your business, without it you will not be able
to purchase any products, materials, supplies, equipment, machinery, etc. As a
result, your next task is to create a professional business letter to
ABC Bank, requesting a $100,000 loan. Further, you will need to create a
professional looking business card for both you and your partner see sample
card below. In order to write this letter and create your business card, you must
fully develop your logo and slogan as they will both be needed to at this point for
use in the Business letterhead and on the business card.
Not
es:
You may use MS Paint or ClipArt or go on-line to a website like
www.logomaker.com to help you create and/or design your logo Be
creative as you will be evaluated for your logo and slogan as well as your
letter. Please see rubric below for expectations re: Logo and Slogan.
Your business letter must include a complete listing of the products (with a
brief description) you plan on selling; a small picture of the product, the price
you expect to pay (Cost Price), the price you hope to charge and the quantity
you expect to sell in year 1. - See sample table below.
You may use the wizard(s) found in MS Word (i.e. File ---New---General
Templates---Letters and Faxes---choose one and click OK) in order to help you
complete your letter (see sample letter attached), but you may also want to
check out your business letter format with your teacher prior to submitting
your letter for grading.
Your business card must be the size of real business card and contain all the
necessary elements: such as Name of
Corporation, Name of Person, Title of Person, Address information, Logo,
Slogan, etc. see sample business cards.

Culminating Activity Task #2

Note: You should have a minimum of 5 products in this table!

Letterh
ead

Parts of a Business Letter

The letterhead usually contains all pertinent contact information

regarding the company which is sending the letter. Information such as:
the mailing address of the business, the website and e-mail information.
Further, the letterhead usually includes the companies Logo and/or
Slogan.

Date

The date typically goes before the inside address. In formal business
writing, it is best to completely write out the date to avoid confusion.
For example, the writer should write October 8, 2002 instead of
10/8/02. One reason for writing out the date is because
10/8/02 is August 10, 2002 in some countries.

Salutation
The salutation addresses the reader of your letter. It follows one of the
following formats:
'Dear [Courtesy Title (Mr., Ms., Mrs., Dr., etc.)] [Name]' or 'Dear
[Title]'. The salutation is followed by a colon in formal writing or a
comma in informal writing. A courtesy title is included only if the
gender of the recipient is known.

Bod
y
The body of your letter should be written clearly and concisely. It
includes as many paragraphs as are necessary to communicate the
information. Paragraphs are generally short, no more than 4 or 5 lines.
If additional documents are being enclosed with a business letter they
should be mentioned in the body of the letter.

Closing
A closing is included after the last paragraph of a business letter. Some
examples of closings in business letters are Sincerely, Cordially,
Respectfully, and Yours truly. The closing that is used will depend on the
contents of the letter and who is receiving it.

Signature

The sender's signature is included after the closing.

Printed Name and Position of Sender

The sender's name and title should be typed under the signature.

Sample Business Letter:

Note: If you need any additional help in writing or preparing your business
letter, you may want to check out these websites:
www.4hb.com,
http://writing.colostate.edu/guides/guide.cfm?guideid=72
Reminder: While you will submit and be graded upon each task as you go along,
you will be required to present your entire project to the class using MS PowerPoint
at the end of the year.

n the continuing pursuit of the $100,000 loan from the ABC Banking Company, the
bank has asked you to prepare some much needed financial and database
information. This information will outline for the bank your estimated Revenues
and Expenses for the next 3 months, as well as provide the bank with a working
copy of the database files you intend on creating and using as part of your ECommerce venture. As a result, your next task is therefore to create a spreadsheet
of your projected revenues and expenses for a 3- month period and set up a

to work properly.
Graphs/Chart - Create 2 appropriate Graphs or Charts that highlight some of
the key figures that you are presenting in your spreadsheet; for example: a
graph that highlights the Sales Revenue for the first 3 months or one that
highlights the Expenses
over this same time period, or one that shows your Profit for the 3 month period,
etc. Be sure to label your graph appropriately!
Be sure to:
Print out a copy of your spreadsheet with the corresponding graphs/charts. Fit to
one page!
Print out a copy of your spreadsheet that shows the formulas you used to
calculate your answers. Fit to one page!
Your Spreadsheet MUST include the following
information

BTT 101 - E-Commerce

Culminating Activity Task #6

our final task for this culminating activity involves actually launching your own
website. Create an informative, interesting and creative e-commerce website
for your business. The main purpose of your website is to sell your products
and/or services. The website should contain a minimum of 10 Web Pages that
highlight your products and/or services.
These pages MUST ALL be linked through the use of Hyperlinks. Further,
there should be a clearly defined Homepage that visitors can return to at
any point in time! Please note that the prices of your products and/or services
should be prominently displayed on each product page. You must also create an
order form that customers would fill out in order to receive their shipment(s) of
products. In an effort to increase the websites interactive and fun nature, you may
visit other e-commerce websites that ofer products or services similar to yours.
You may want to visit websites such as www.flamingtext.com and/or
www.3dtextmaker.com, in order to create some cool text effects. Also, previously
visited sites such as www.gifworld.com, may help you as you attempt to create a
fun and inviting atmosphere for people that are visiting your site. Finally, feel free
to experiment with some of MS FrontPage features, such as Dynamic HTML Efects,
Page Transitions, Web Components such as Marquees, Hover Buttons, etc. in
order to increase the creativity of your site. If you want to include some coding for
video games on your website, try out these sites: www.velocityarcade.com and
www.freeonlinegames.com . Good Luck and Have fun!
Note: Remember to take into consideration product or business
information (such as product SKUs. Prices, Sizes, etc.) that you have
decided or prepared in previous culminating tasks!
