Answer ALL the questions

All questions carry equal marks

1.(a)

What are the various guiding principles and planning mechanism for overall
development of a port? Provide details on the vessel's waiting time and berth
occupancy factor in a medium sized port?
[2+2]

(b)

What are the various aspects involved in the design of a navigation channel?
Explain the various responsible factors providing an appropriate mathematical
expression to evaluate the vessel squat? What are the side-slope requirements
under various soil type conditions required in a riverine port?
[2+2+2]

2.(a)

With a neat sketch provide details on the facilities inside a commercial port
complex? What is the criterion required to decide the optimum number of berths
during the design stage of a port, and provide an appropriate mathematical
expression for the same?
[4+3]

(b)

What are the various types of fishing vessels, and additional elements required in
a fishing port compared to a commercial port?
[3]

3.(a)

A tanker with a draft of 36.5 ft and beam of 89 ft enters a harbor entrance

channel at a speed of 10 knots relative to the channel velocity. The harbor
entrance channel has a width of 800 ft and depth of 41 ft. Estimate the vessel
squat in feets, assuming that there is only one ship in the channel center?
[5]

(b)

Consider a rectangular basin that is short and deep. What is the appropriate
mathematical expression to estimate the current velocity for a constrictive and
non-constrictive channel?
