The Indian subcontinent of 1947 became the burial place of the British Raj. The
struggle for freedom and independence had culminated in the creation of two
new and sovereign states, India and Pakistan. But the dawn of liberty brought
with it a human tragedy of colossal magnitude. The hastiness with which the
Partition plan was put together, the unpardonable rush in which a land of
millions was dissected, the hurried British departure from India, and the
injudicious distribution of the goods, resources and assets of the subcontinent
all contributed to a huge disaster. This book aims to highlight the flaws in the
making of Partition and the attempts and intentions of the British to draw
boundaries at their impulse and whims, and not in keeping with the demands
and wishes of the people.
Rabia Umar Ali is Assistant Professor, History Department, Quaid-i-Azam
University, Islamabad.

The objective of the Orangi Pilot Project (OPP), established in 1980, was
to build models of participatory development that could overcome the
problems faced by conventional development programmes in dealing with
informal settlements and poverty related issues. As a part of the Project,
a Micro-credit programmethe first of its kind in Pakistanalso slowly
evolved. Although this programme was originally limited to Orangi, through
the OPPs Charitable Trust (OCT), it soon moved to supporting NGOs
and CBOs in the rural and urban areas of Pakistan in the operation of their
own micro-credit programmes. This book describes the evolution of the
OCT programme, its current vision, unconventional methodology, the
leadership of the OCT partners, and issues related to the programmes
management and sustainability.
Arif Hasan is an architect and planner dealing with urban planning and
development issues, particularly those concerning Asia and Pakistan.
Mansoor Raza is currently Deputy Director, Advocacy and Research, for
the Church World Service Pakistan/Afghanistan.

These memoirs are based on four notebooks by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the
founder of Bangladesh and the centre of the cause clbre of the 1970s, written
while he was a state prisoner in 1967. The book records Sheikh Mujibur
Rahmans opinions about political developments in East Bengal/East Pakistan. It
contains considerable material about the turbulent political conditions in which
the Awami League and the United Front were formed, routing the Muslim
League in the elections to the East Bengal Assembly in 1954. The author has
made observations about several prominent leaders of the time, including Jinnah,
Liaquat Ali Khan, Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy, A.K. Fazlul Haq, Maulana
Bhashani, Khawaja Nazimuddin, Mohammad Ali Bogra, Chaudhury Muhammad
Ali, and Nurul Amin. These candidly written memoirs help explain the genesis
of Bengali Muslim nationalism.
Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was a Bengali nationalist politician and the founder of
Bangladesh.
Dr Fakrul Alam is Professor of English at the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh.
