Announcements of Parish Life

Prelude Sally Carson
The Prelude is an integral part of the worship service.
The music has been carefully chosen and rehearsed for this moment
to help us center ourselves into God’s presence for worship.

∗ Greeting Sarah Sorrell (8:30); Grant Warren (11:00)

Will you please stand for the greeting... (pause while people stand)
God hears our voices and our supplications.
Therefore, we will call on the Lord as long as we live.
What can we return to the Lord for all his bounty to us?
We will lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the Lord!
∗ Opening Prayer
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Let us pray...
Almighty God,
you have called us to serve you,
yet without your grace
we are unable to please you.
Mercifully grant that your Holy Spirit
may in all things direct and rule our hearts;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and forever. Amen.

Call to Offering
God wants us to see that the blessings we enjoy are meant to be shared for the good
of all and for the glory of His name. We bring our gifts to God and ask Him to bless
these gifts and use them to spread the gospel of His love.
Let us now present ourselves and our gifts.

∗ Offertory Prayer
Let us pray...
We confess, O God,
that we are often overwhelmed by needs in the world
— hunger, disease, strife, prejudice, and many other problems.
Receive these offerings as signs that we will act
to get something done
instead of worrying about what we cannot do.
Bless these gifts so that they will bring
healing and love in Jesus' name. Amen.

∗ Affirmation of Faith, No. 882 The Apostles’ Creed, Ecumenical Version

Please remain standing for our Affirmation of Faith, The Apostles’ Creed, found in
the Hymnal, number 882... (pause, while people find page)
Let us unite in this historic confession of the Christian Faith...
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven,
is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Let us pray...
Eternal God,
your Son Jesus Christ,
now exalted as Lord of all,
pours out his gifts on the church.
Grant us that unity which your Spirit gives,
keep us in the bond of peace,
and bring all creation to worship before your throne;
for you live and reign,
one God, forever and ever. Amen.

First Lesson: Exodus 19:2-8a
Our first lesson is from the Book of Exodus...
They set out from Rephidim [Ref a deem] and came into the wilderness of Sinai, and
they encamped in the wilderness. There Israel encamped before the mountain, while
Moses went up to God. The LORD called to him out of the mountain, saying, “Thus
you shall say to the house of Jacob, and tell the people of Israel: You yourselves have
seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles' wings and brought
you to myself. Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant,
you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples, for all the earth is mine; and
you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. These are the words that
you shall speak to the people of Israel.”

So Moses came and called the elders of the people and set before them all these words
that the LORD had commanded him. All the people answered together and said, “All
that the LORD has spoken we will do.”

Let us respond to this word with the Psalter, Psalm 100, found in the hymnal,
number 821...

Second Lesson: Romans 5:1-8

Our second lesson comes from Saint Paul’s letter to the Romans and talks about our
Peace with God... (pause)
Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our
Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace
in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. More than that, we
rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance
produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame,
because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has
been given to us.

For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one
will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would
dare even to die— but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners,
Christ died for us.

∗ Gospel Lesson: Matthew 10:1,5-23
Let us remain standing for the Gospel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ according
to Saint Matthew...
And he called to him his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean
spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every affliction. These twelve
Jesus sent out, instructing them, “Go nowhere among the Gentiles and enter no town
of the Samaritans, but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. And
proclaim as you go, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ Heal the sick, raise
the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons. You received without paying; give without
pay. Acquire no gold nor silver nor copper for your belts, no bag for your journey, nor
two tunics nor sandals nor a staff, for the laborer deserves his food. And whatever
town or village you enter, find out who is worthy in it and stay there until you
depart. As you enter the house, greet it. And if the house is worthy, let your peace
come upon it, but if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you. And if anyone will
not receive you or listen to your words, shake off the dust from your feet when you
leave that house or town. Truly, I say to you, it will be more bearable on the day of
judgment for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah than for that town.

“Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents
and innocent as doves. Beware of men, for they will deliver you over to courts and
flog you in their synagogues, and you will be dragged before governors and kings for
my sake, to bear witness before them and the Gentiles. When they deliver you over,
do not be anxious how you are to speak or what you are to say, for what you are to
say will be given to you in that hour. For it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of
your Father speaking through you. Brother will deliver brother over to death, and
the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to
death, and you will be hated by all for my name's sake. But the one who endures to
the end will be saved. When they persecute you in one town, flee to the next, for
truly, I say to you, you will not have gone through all the towns of Israel before the
Son of Man comes.

This is the Word of God for the People of God.
Thanks be to God.
You may be seated.
