BearSmart Salmo
Initiative Launched
The Village of Salmo is proud to announce that it is

moving forward with BearSmart Salmo, a community
initiative to promote voluntary and preventative conservation measures to address the root causes of humanbear conflicts. The ultimate aim is to reduce the risk to
human safety and damage to private property, as well as
the number of bears that have to be destroyed each year.
We live in bear country and it is important that
municipalities do what they can to limit attractants that
encourage wildlife to visit and stay in populated areas,
says Mayor White. This community initiative is just part
of our commitment to sustainable living that respects our
environment. We are grateful to our partners and sponsors for making BearSmart Salmo possible.
The Village has secured the expertise of the HumanBear Conflict Working Group and the support, including financial, of a host of partners: Margaux Resources,
Columbia Basin Trust, Regional District of Central Kootenay and the Trans-border Grizzly Bear Program.
Conservation Officer Jason Hawkes first spoke to Council in 2016 and outlined the steps that the Village could
take to reduce human-bear conflict and move towards
BearSmart Community Status. Margaux Resources provided a $5000 donation to fund the completion of Salmos Bear Hazard Assessment and Human-Bear Conflict
Management Plan which is underway and expected to be
completed later in the year. These documents will help
direct future action to mitigating human bear conflicts in
Salmo and surrounding area.
Last year, Salmo took a major positive step in that direction by converting all of its municipally owned garbage
cans to bear resistant covers through an innovative madein-Salmo solution that was widely publicized in local and

Councillor Heatlie has championed this issue as part
of his Environment & Sustainability portfolio with the
support of Mayor and Council. The Village has launched

for children and youth with moderate to complex mental
health and/or substance use issues. Wraparound focuses
on the strengths of children, youth and their families and
brings together a support team to work towards the goals
identified by the families and coordinate services.
Families tells us that the key to making Wraparound
work is having peer contacts available in their own community. Someone who has had similar experiences, or a
caring adult who can listen, provide a helping hand and
be a support when needed.
The WK LAT is hosting a series of free coaching workshops for community members interested in volunteering as Caring Adults. The first workshop will take place in
Nelson on Thursday, January 26 at Kootenay Kids (6 9

Winter In The Forest Festival!
What else would you rather be doing on a Monday in

February? This year the greatest little outdoor winter festival is happening on February 13. Its BC Family Day, so
come on out with your family and enjoy great music and
storytelling, offbeat activities, plenty of food and lots of
good company.
The Kaslo Outdoor Recreation Society will have skis on
hand if your child would like to try out this easy to learn
sport. Bring your old hockey stick and jump into a game
of Four on Four ball hockey. At noon, catch all the action
of the Human Dogsled Races. Teams of three human huskies and one pint-sized musher will be vying for the grand
prize of $200 towards their favourite charity. Just afterward,
the woodsman competition has fun events that anyone can
enter, like the Swede sawing race and the water boil. Win
the prize for being the first to boil a coffee can of water over
a fire you made with only a hunk of cedar, a hatchet and a
handful of wooden matches.

Of course there will be a bonfire. Join the circle along

with your friends and neighbours. Lots of catching up goes
on around the fire, or you can just listen to the music or the
storytelling on the nearby stage while toasting some bannock or sipping on hot cocoa or spiced apple juice.
An outdoor winter festival is guaranteed to give you a
good appetite. Luckily there are some very good cooks in
Kaslo. Grab a hot dog, then choose which of more than a
dozen homemade soups you want for your lunch. For a real
treat, try out hot, sweet and sticky maple taffy, cooked up
and served on a bed of snow.
If you have ever wondered what the toads are doing in
February or which Kootenay animal really hibernates,
Angus Glass from the Fish & Wildlife Compensation Fund
will be there to answer those questions and others.
Whats new at this years festival? Were amping up the
snow sculpture aspect of the festival. Sculptors Spring
Shine and Chris Petersen of Argenta will be joined by Nelson snow sculptor Alexander Avelino. Hamill Creek Timber Homes is the Patron of the Arts for this snow sculpture
production a contribution that is much appreciated.
Its all free, including your lunch, courtesy of the Kaslo &
District Community Forest Society and the festival takes
place at the Kaslo airport from 10 am till 3 pm, Monday,
February 13 (BC Family Day).
