The honorable ones the principle of ---------, all teachers and

administration staffs of ------- and all my friends from tenth until twelfth
grade and most of all, the juries for this speech competition.
Before I begin to give a speech, I would like to invite you all to thank Allah
the Almighty, Who has given us Mercy and Blessing, so we can meet
together in this blessing place. And also lets
deliver sholawat and salam to our prophet Muhammad SAW, Who has
brought us from the darkness to the brightness, so we are always in the
right path.
Ladies and gentlemen
It is a great honor for me, to stand right here in front of you all to give a
speech about the importance of learning English, the topic of my speech is
kinda related to this competition knowing that a lot of students hate this
subject in school.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Language plays an important role in human life. One tries to acquire, learn
and use language as a means of communication, and simultaneously as
social symbol of humanity. By using language someone could make
statements, convey facts and knowledge, explain or report something,
and keep social relations among the language users. These indicate that
by means of language, people can express their ideas, feeling, information
etc through communication.
We all think. And we all communicate. But how do we do it? We do it
through words, not just words but words in a particular language which
others understand.
Though it is easy to communicate in our mother tongue; that alone is not
enough in todays world. We need to consider the fact that people
speaking different languages mingle with us almost on a daily basis. Lets
say when we go to Bali, there are a lot of foreigners speaking in their own
language, not ours obviously and its no longer a uncommon thing if you
see a foreigner walking down the street speaking English to the passersby.
It is here that English language and the knowledge of it becomes an
advantage. English may not be the most spoken language in the world,
but it is the official language in many countries in the world. Such as
Australia and the United States.
As one of language in the world, English is considered and applied as
international language. Since then, it is very popular and have been
spoken and learnt by almost people in the world. There are some reasons
why English is important and many people attempt to learn it. Some of

them are: for finding job, traveling, interacting one each other, doing
business, taking examination, doing research, writing in the foreign
language, etc.
It is also not surprising that more than 50% of content in the internet is in
English.
Moreover, the best books and films in the world are produced in
English. Sometimes, popular and best-selling books in other languages are
translated into English to reach a world-wide audience.
In such developing country like Indonesia, English has a vital role in all
aspects of life. But believe it or not,a lot of people in Indonesia cant speak
English in a proper way. One ot the reasons to that is they dont even
motivated to speak or even learn English because some of them might
think that they dont need to learn the language which is not spoken in
Indonesia. They might think, We live in Indonesia. We speak Bahasa. So
why do we have to learn English if were not gonna use it anyway?. If
youre one of this kind of people, you are most likely to not be able to see
the world because apparently English is spoken by almost all people
around the world to communicate with each other.
A lot of people may or may not realize that by being able to speak English
whether as our second language or third language, we can gain a lot of
benefits from this ability. We probably can get a better occupation or a
better education, we can make a lot of friends from around the world and
we can travel around the world without getting lost because we cant
speak English or even the primary language of the country itself.
Furthermore, it can be used for developing relationships in the
international forum, for reading English book , to tighten the relationship
among nations in the world, etc. As students, we learn English to obtain
various knowledge, to comprehend and understand the textbooks learned
in English, to gain knowledge and skills, and to be ready enter to the
university, as one of the test requirements for students of senior High
School etc. Looking at the above important roles of English, that is why
English is very important to understand and to master by every people
throughout the world since before.
People, especially in Indonesia or even in our place seem a little bit
unmotivated or even afraid to learn English because it is like learning a
whole new thing. English is big, you cant learn it by reading a grammar
book for a week or two. But why dont you try to learn it in another way?
Like something more fun and enjoyable, like listening to some western
pop songs or watching movies almost every single day so you can be
familiar with the language itself. Use English in your daily life. Immerse
yourself in learning English. Make it as your friend, not your enemy.
But as far as I know, a lot of Indonesians have been seriously teaching
themselves English or even taking some English courses to improve their
English skills which is one of the impacts of globalization who has been
around our country for a pretty long period of time.

At the end of my speech, I will quote a wise expression: ENGLISH WILL

MAKE EVERYBODY SURVIVE AND GO ANYWHERE. This expression reminds
us how importance of English for human life is. As global or universal
language, English is not only enables us to communicate and interact with
every people throughout the world, but also it could alter our life to be
better. Furthermore, we also must be aware that the western countries
play extra ordinary role in developing and keeping science and
technology. Thus, if we want to be a skilful scientists, linguists, and be
able to compete with the other countries in the world, we must
understand, master and learn the language they use, namely English.
So we can easily conclude that English is higly necessary for our life,
especially in the globalization era. Im not saying that if you dont speak
English, then youre a LOSER. No, thats not my point. But whats wrong if
we try to make a little bit better life for ourselves by being able to speak
English? Because if you can speak English, you have this one key to step
closer to getting better jobs or better education as what I said and its not
only for children,teenagers or young adult but also for everyone, its not
limited by age and you dont need to be young to learn English.
Because no matter how we neglect English in our lives, people say that
English is a bridge to the future.
I think its completely enough for me to this point. The wrong utterances
are caused by limitation of my ability and the right one is merely from
Allah SWT. So, I beg your pardon, finally I say. Thats all my speech.
Hopefully, it will be useful for all of us. Thank you very much for your
