Ceramics II - Final Project: Centerpiece

Due Dates:
Greenware to be finished by last day in clay: _______
Finished glazed pots due: ______

General Project Overview:

-

You will apply the pinch, coil, and/or wheel throwing construction methods in order to create a unique
multi-sectional bowl large enough to serve as a centerpiece.
You will make choices about clay bodies, glazes, and construction methods according to aesthetic and
functional intentions.
You will carve texture or add an appliqu to your centerpiece. These additions will complement the
works function, clay body, and glaze.
You will design and construct works demonstrating excellent craft.

Basic Requirements Self-Check List:

Requirement Description:

Check if Applicable:

I have approved my design with Miss T.

I used coil, pinch, and/or wheel throwing construction methods to construct
my piece.
My final design is large and commanding enough to serve as a centerpiece.
My design includes at least two sections if it is wheel-thrown and at least three
sections if it is hand-built.
I have carved texture into my piece and/or scored-and-slipped an appliqu.
I have carved my name/initials and class period on the bottom of my work.
My work is my own. It does not include any logos, names, letters, numbers, or
images created by another artist.
I have used excellent craft. My centerpiece is smooth, with precise
measurements and attention to detail.
If I am wheel-throwing, I have trimmed my work and double-checked my wall
thickness.
I have used glazes appropriate for my clay body (Cone 05 for earthenware and
Cone 6 for stoneware).

Important Vocabulary:
Review Vocabulary:
Pinch Construction: Pressing, squeezing and pushing a ball of clay with ones fingers to render a form.
Coil Construction: Creating a form through attaching rolled snakes of clay.
Wheel-Throwing: Shaping clay on a spinning disk.

Score-and-Slip: To scratch hatch marks onto a clay form, apply a clay slurry, and attach the pieces
together. Scoring-and-slipping is works best when the clay is leather-hard.
Texture: Surface treatment. Can be rendered through carving or appliqu.
Appliqu: An addition to a pieces exterior, scored-and-slipped when the clay is leather hard.
New Vocabulary:

Calipers: A common ceramic tool used for taking exact measurements. They are especially
useful when creating alike forms. Our calipers are red and located in the wheel-throwing area.
Procedure:
-

Create/Sketch ten different designs on on your Sketch Sheet. From those ten, choose 2 to enlarge. Check
your design with the teacher.
Use either the pinch, coil, or wheel-throwing construction methods to create your centerpieces.
Remember that wheel-thrown projects need at least two sections, while hand-built projects need at
least three.
When it is leatherhard, clean handbuilt piece with the Sureforms, metal ribs/scrapers, and rubber ribs. You
will clean your wheel thrown projects while throwing and trimming.
When your piece is clean and smooth, add texture and/or create other applications.
Allow your finished work to reach the bone dry stage. It can now be bisque-fired.
Bisque fire and then glaze with glazes that suit your clay body (Cone 05 for earthenware and cone 6 for
stoneware.) Your glazes should work together to compliment one another and the context of the piece. For
example, the glaze, Oatmeal is too thick to show finely carved details.
After the glaze firing, you may fill out your reflection and self-assessment.

Assessment Components:
I will assess your pieces by the following criteria:
Minimum Requirements

-Large centerpiece from pinch, coil, or wheel-throwing construction

methods
-High daily effort
-Name/ Period is labeled
-Reflection is complete and includes original sketches.
-Student point column on grade sheet is completed.
