Topic: Addressing the Effects of Natural Disasters and Calamities in Rural Areas.

Abstract:
Coming from a province where flush floods, earthquakes, landslides and other
natural calamities/disasters are frequent, I personally have first-hand experience of
how devastating those kinds of situations can be. A house must be the primary
shelter and shield of people for these kinds of events and a single house made of
simple materials could only take so much before it gives in to the strong forces of
nature. People are the most affected during times of calamities, they are left broken
and uncared for. And as architects the people are also part of our responsibility. It is
our duty to build disaster ready structures that would save lives during calamities
and cater to them after unfortunate disasters.
Resilient architecture is a trend today, and I personally think the need for this is
much stronger than ever. We cannot predict calamities and surely we cannot stop
them. The only thing we can do is to be prepared, and when it has come and gone,
we should stand up. And I think through innovations in architecture we can find a
way to build better, stronger and sturdier shelters and structures for the victims.
There has been several disaster ready projects already but not much have been
implemented most especially in places where there is not much opportunity for
architecture itself, in places where such innovations are needed more than
anything. There have been several attempts by UAP Emergency Architects at
different resilient structures such as school buildings, resilient housing, evacuation
centers, permanent shelters and temporary shelters. (http://uap-ea.blogspot.com/)

This study therefor aims to answer the following questions:

1.) How can we address natural disaster and different calamities most especially
in rural areas?

2.) What kind of structures would fit to be a resilient, and how would this address
the problem at hand?
3.) What architectural techniques should be done so that the structure could be
of value after/before the calamity?

Inability of Oriental Mindoro to Host Large Events Due to Lack of Large

Indoor Facilities

Abstract:
Oriental Mindoro is the regional capital of Region IV-B MIMAROPA, and there are
numerous gatherings being held in the province but there arises issues due to the
lack of large indoor facilities. Some of these events are done on the main streets
and school gymnasiums of Calapan City, the city capital of Oriental Mindoro. Having
said that, these events causes pedestrian and vehicular traffic, disturbing classes of
students, closing of establishments and many more. Basically, the province is
unable to host large events and regional gatherings due to the lack of large indoor
facilities that would host the participants and thousands of attendees from different
provinces and regions of said events.
In some cases during regional gatherings, the Mindorenos and Calapenos would still
go to their neighboring provinces, namely Marinduque, Romblon and Palawan.
Wherein main regional events/gatherings should be held on the capital of a region.
Hosting these events in Oriental Mindoro would boost tourism and economic
stability, an important component that is lost every time Mindorenos go out of their
province. A proposal for a large indoor facility such as a Hotel Convention and
Exhibition Center is what the researcher deems vital for the provinces exposure.

This study therefor aims to answer the following questions:

1.) Why is there a strong need for a large indoor facility in the province?
2.) What guiding factors could be used in order to successfully create a design
that would identify the structures as one with the region it represents?
3.) How would the proposed Hotel Convention and Exhibition Center provide a
new edge and a different approach in the field of Architecture?

Abstract:
UNESCO declared Puerto Galera a biosphere reserve[4] under its Man and the Biosphere
Programme in the 1970s. The Verde Island Passage is at the apex of the so-called Coral Triangle
the Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia which has the distinction of being the "global center of
marine biodiversity".

This study therefor aims to answer the following questions:

1.) How can Architecture promote tourism?
2.) What structures would be of greater use to promote tourism.
3.) Can architecture promote tourism and enhance its premises aesthetically
without endangering the state of the natural environment?

establishments are continuing to be built throughout the past years most especially
in the provinces city capital, Calapan. But the province lacks in advancement when
it comes to transportation. Oriental Mindoro is consist of 14 municipalities and a
city, wherein the public land transportation is only via jeepneys, tricycles, and vans.
There are difficulties on the said mode of transportation since there is only one
major terminal in the province and it is located near Calapans public market and
this terminal only caters to some municipalities aside from that, only small
terminals scatter around the province. With this dilemma the locals are having a
hard time traveling to and from the provinces capital most especially those living in
the farthest municipality from Calapan.
The current public terminal beside Calapans public market lacks proper facilities for
passengers and most especially formulates vehicular traffic. Other terminals that
are scattered throughout Calapan also cannot sustain the different needs of
passengers. The researcher proposes a Transportation Hub with a Parking Building,
a structure that is the first of its kind in the province. The proposal aims to
centralize and improve the current situation of public transportation in the province
while paving the way for economic and architectural advancements.
This study therefor aims to answer the following questions:
1.) How could public transportation be improved in the province of Oriental
Mindoro?
2.) What is the most ideal site in Oriental Mindoro for the proposal of
Transportation Hub with a Parking Building?
3.) What architectural techniques could be done in order for the proposal of a
Transportation Hub with a Parking Building to be beneficial for the
city/province?
