Your Guide to

Saturn Retrograde 2016

Vedic Astrology Forecast for the 12 Signs
by Somya Devi

Who is Saturn?
Lord Shani, or Saturn, is the planet (seen as a deity) who brings some of the
greatest struggles we will face in life, and also some of the greatest
opportunities for spiritual growth.
Saturn is the slowest-moving of the Vedic grahas, taking around 2.5 years to
fully transit a sign. As such, his placement in a birth chart, and his transit, can
slow things down and put pressure on the area under his influence. Whatever
is happening for us there will feel like hard work, and will require some
dedication and commitment.
Shani is personified as an old person who is thin and frail, with yellow eyes and
large teeth. This image of Saturn elicits the sense of stress, suffering, and
exhaustion that he can bring. Yet in the same imagery we sense the vast depths
of wisdom and maturity that can be gained after one has persevered through so
much. He teaches us about hard work, commitment, responsibility, endurance
and service.
He is the planet that makes us think about time and the long-term, contemplating the dark and vast unknown. He
makes sure that we eventually face the results of our karma (actions), which inspires service as we become more aware
of him. He leads us to a recognition of the temporary nature of our existence and all our possessions and relationships.
He reminds us that there is something more eternal, more enduring, and that is the universal spirit. This is the one
aspect of life that can consistently offer us some stability, and as such, Saturn compels us to create structure in our
lives that is of value to our spirit, rather than our whims.

Key Houses & Times

Saturn is the planetary ruler of Capricorn (Makara), and Aquarius (Kumbha).
His influence is present in the nakshatras of Pushya, Anuradha, and Uttara Bhadrapada.
He is considered exalted in Libra and debilitated in Aries.
Saturn is the indicator (karaka) for Career (and thus influences the 10th house) and Elders.
He has directional strength (dig bala) in the 7th House.
He takes around 30 years to transit the entire zodiac from our perspective on Earth. Hence Saturns
Return is when Saturn first re-enters the sign he was in at the time of your birth (usually between
ages 27-30). A second Saturns Return occurs in your late 50s.
The time from when Saturn begins transiting the sign before your Moon-sign until when he exits the
sign after your Moon-sign is called Sade Sati. This can be a challenging 7.5-year period.

Where is he now?

Scorpio
(Vrischika)
Saturn is about halfway through his 2.5-year
transit of Scorpio (Vrischika).
Scorpio is the sign where we seek to strengthen
our emotional vulnerability and face our fears
about impermanence, death and transformation.
With Saturn here, the pressure is on to examine
how committed we are to facing our fears,
accepting and strengthening our vulnerability,
and creating structures that provide some sense
of security to the most deeply sensitive parts of
our emotional bodies.
This applies particularly in the area of life that
Scorpio indicates in your chart.
Saturn has recently turned retrograde.

What does this mean

for you?

Saturn Retrograde
When a planet goes retrograde, this refers to
its appearance against the backdrop of the stars
(the zodiac) as viewed from Earth. It does not
actually change the direction of its orbit, but it
appears to do so. This is like how a slowermoving runner on the track appears to move
backwards as seen by the one who is speeding
past them, although both are circling the track
in the same direction. When a planet goes
retrograde, the things it influences in our
psyche tend to slow down or back up, and we
reconsider them.
Retrograde Saturn now calls us to slow down
and deeply contemplate the things he rules,
including our long-term goals, commitments,
responsibility, and careers, as well as how we
deal with stress and fear.

We may take these next few months to really

reconsider what we are committed to for the
long-term, thinking about what is of value to
our spirit. We may forgo immediate
gratification in favor of something more
enduring.
With Saturn in Scorpio, we are compelled to
reassess our commitments to how we deal
with our inner sensitivity and vulnerability. We
will reexamine how we approach personal
transformation and how to strengthen our
emotional body and inner spiritual warrior.
Retrograde Saturn may also cause some
confusion and reconsideration around the
areas of life he governs as a house ruler in our
birthchart.

Saturn and Mars

In an unusual occurrence, Mars is conjunct with Saturn in Scorpio for nearly half of this year. He entered Scorpio in
late February, and except for a short journey back through Libra during his retrograde course, Mars and Saturn will
be together in the same sign through late September.
The energy of these two together is potentially explosive. Saturn tends to put the brakes on things, dry things up,
cool us down, and pressure us to halt. Mars influence, on the other hand, is like putting both feet on the gas, lighting
things on fire, and blowing them up impetuously. Mars wants us to forge ahead with intense energy and destroy
anything in our way. Saturn wants us to take our time and create structures that are enduring. Mars, like our gut
instinct, makes us think more about the immediate, while Saturn compels us to contemplate the long-term fate of
our actions.
The hot-and-cold nature of these two planets mingling could create a vacillation in our minds as we contemplate our
commitments, especially over Saturns retrograde course for the next few months. Mars is also retrograde at the
moment, backing up towards Saturn. His influence could make us want to blow up something in order to conquer our
fears, in Scorpio, but be careful not to let him destroy a structure you are working on that requires a bit more
patience. Things will be more clear and you will be more ready to reaffirm your commitments after September.
Your rising sign indicates which areas of your life in particular will be feeling these effects And now, the forecasts!

2016 Saturn Retrograde

Forecast for Each
Vedic Rising Sign:

Aries
For Aries Rising individuals, Saturn is halfway through his transit
of your 8th house. This can be an especially difficult transit. The
8th house relates to loss and sudden change, especially in regards
to our relationships with others. It also relates to death, sex, and
the hidden, mystical or occult side of life. Like Scorpio (and
aligned with Scorpio at this moment), the 8th house is where we
need to do a lot of personal growth by finding the courage to face
lifes changes, and Saturn is putting on the pressure here this year.
You may be going through some serious transitions especially
around relationships. This can include the loss of someone close.
You are also attempting to let go of part of your old self and allow a transformation, as you face your fears and try to
strengthen the deepest and most vulnerable parts of your emotional body. Though you may want to complete this
process quickly, Saturns heavy and slow-moving influence is drawing out the process. His retrograde course may make
you reconsider your commitment to your spiritual growth and transformation, and compel you to create structures to
help you better to deal with things like loss and sudden changes.
Saturn rules your 10th and 11th houses, so you may feel some delays or confusion around your career, your social groups,
your hopes and dreams, and your aspirations for how you want to affect society. There may be a period of pause as you
reconsider your long-term goals in these areas. You are considering making some shifts, and contemplating what has
the most long-term value in these realms. You will begin feeling more clear about this after Saturns period of
retrograde, and will be ready to re-commit to a steady course. While Mars is joining Saturn here, be careful not to burn
(or blow up) any bridges. Channel that Martian energy into some yogic discipline for yourself, so you it doesnt get the
best of you.

Taurus
For Taurus Rising individuals, Saturn is halfway through his transit
of your 7th house of relationships. You are really feeling a lot of
pressure coming from your relationships this year, including both
personal and business partners. You are thinking about your which
relationships are really valuable to your growth and transformation
in the long run. You are examining your own vulnerability, that
which arises from opening yourself to emotional intimacy. You may
have a business or personal partner that is pressuring you to
commit, and you are feeling into your fears around that possibility.
Though you may want to complete this process quickly, Saturns
heavy and slow-moving influence is drawing it out. His retrograde course may make you reconsider your commitment to
your partners, or restructure things a bit, compelling you to create something solid that has more potential for longevity.
With Mars influence right now, things may feel a bit hot and cold, fluctuating from passionate to more serious. While
youre considering your long-term goals around relationships, be careful not to blow up in the heat of the moment.
Saturn rules your 9th and 10th houses, so you may feel some delays or confusion when it comes to your teachers, gurus,
and higher education, as well as your career. You might feel yourself backing up to reconsider your long-term goals and
responsibility in these areas. You are thinking of making some shifts, and contemplating what has the most long-term
value in these realms. You will begin feeling more clear about this after Saturns period of retrograde, and will be ready
to re-commit to a steady course. While Mars is joining Saturn here, be careful not to burn (or blow up) any bridges in
these areas. Channel that Martian energy into some yogic discipline and inner courage for yourself, so you it doesnt get
the best of you.

Gemini
For Gemini Rising individuals, Saturn is halfway through his
transit of your 6th house of hard work, service, opponents, health
& illness. You may feel overburdened with mundane tasks right
now, or find yourself in a position of caretaking someone else.
This can be a very transformational experience for you, but it does
not come without a good deal of stress and pressure. You might
also feel a lot of pressure coming from those who oppose you, and
find yourself consistently working to overcome challenges. This
could include health issues, especially those of a vata nature.
Saturns heavy and slow-moving influence is drawing out these
challenges. You are finding, however, that you have much more endurance and determination than you realized, and you
are able to channel that persistence into overcoming challenges and creating structure that supports the things that you
really love (your creations, including children). His retrograde motion may cause you to back up and re-evaluate your
approach, as you take your time considering the immense value that comes from consistently performing acts of service.
Saturn rules your 8th and 9th houses, so you may feel some delays or confusion around things like sex, death, and
shadow work, as well as with teachers, gurus, and higher education. You may be reconsidering your long-term goals in
these areas, and what or who to be committed to in these realms. You will begin feeling more clear about this after
Saturns period of retrograde, and will be ready to re-commit to a steady course. While Mars is joining Saturn here, be
careful not to burn (or blow up) any bridges. Channel that Martian energy into some yogic discipline for yourself, so you
it doesnt get the best of you.

Cancer
For Cancer Rising individuals, Saturn is halfway through his transit
of your 5th house, relating to your children, creativity, and your
hearts desires. You are feeling a lot of pressure when it comes to
your creative pursuits, as well as your children. There may be
some sort of stalling in this area, or a bit of a dry spell if you are
normally very creative. This could also apply to romance. Your
relationships with children might be a bit strict and serious right
now, as you are really feeling the weight of responsibility that is
needed to raise a child over an extended period of time.
Saturns retrograde course may be causing you to have second
thoughts about some previous creative endeavors, and to restructure your creative process and approach. As a Cancer,
with your fifth house being Scorpio, your inspiration usually arises from your deep and sensitive emotional waters. Your
creativity is heavily linked with your dharma, what you feel is your life purpose, and your identity. Saturns influence is
putting a lot of pressure on you and causing you to question whether what you are doing is really of enduring value.
Saturn also rules your 7th and 8th houses, so you may feel some delays or confusion in relationships, both personal and
professional, and also about matters behind the veil such as sex, death, and personal transformation. Now is a time
when you are reconsidering your long-term goals in your approach to relationships and to transformation. You are
considering making some shifts, and contemplating what has the most long-term value in these realms. You will begin
feeling more clear about this after Saturns period of retrograde, and will be ready to re-commit to a steady course.
While Mars is joining Saturn here, be careful not to burn (or blow up) any bridges. Channel that Martian energy into
some yogic discipline for yourself, so you it doesnt get the best of you.

Leo
For Leo Rising individuals, Saturn is halfway through his transit of your 4th
house, relating to your home-life, vehicles, real estate, the peace in your heart,
and also your mother. You may be feeling a lot of pressure coming at you from
these areas of life (and in general, as Saturn aspects your first house). You
might find yourself in a long, drawn-out real estate venture, which you are
reconsidering again during this period of Saturn retrograde. You desire to find
some kind of structure to soothe your deeply sensitive heart, which may feel a
bit contracted or frozen during this transit.
Retrograde Saturn, especially with Mars influence, brings the opportunity to
melt some of the ice that has accumulated. You have the chance to get in
touch with your heart and reexamine whatever fears are there that have taken
hold of you. The next few months are a time for you to try to get in touch with
what brings enduring value to your heart, and your spirit.
Saturn rules your 6th and 7th houses, so you may feel some delays or
confusion in relationships, and in regards to service and facing challenges. You
are considering making some shifts in these areas, and are contemplating
what has the most long-term value here. You will begin feeling more clear
after Saturns period of retrograde, and will be ready to re-commit to a steady
course. While Mars is joining Saturn, be careful not to burn (or blow up) any
bridges. Channel that Martian energy into some yogic discipline for yourself,
so you it doesnt get the best of you.

Virgo
For Virgo Rising individuals, Saturn is halfway through his transit
of your 3rd house, where you find your individual interests,
courage, and willpower. You are feeling a heaviness when it comes
to your gut instinct and what it takes to assert your will. Though
the pressure is on, Saturn will offer you a certain amount of
determination and perseverance, and you will find that as you
work hard and stay committed, you will slowly but surely
progress. You may be feeling some pressure from siblings.
Your hobbies and leisure time activities may seem sparse right now,
or you may find yourself getting sucked into them for long periods
of time. With Saturns retrograde motion, you are reevaluating what pastimes and hobbies are important to you, and
trying to refine them into those that offer enduring value against the test of time. With these you will create structures
that support them. Communication could be slowed or strained at the moment, contrary to your normally prolific
Mercurial nature. You may find some frequent delays happening with sending emails or missing phone calls.
Saturn rules your 5th and 6th houses, so you may feel some delays or confusion around children, creativity, and issues of
service, hard work, and health. You might find an opponent or a health issue from the past resurfacing, or find yourself
having to go back and complete some mundane tasks that were already done. You are considering making some shifts in
your creative goals and endeavors, and contemplating what would bring the most long-term value. You will begin feeling
more clear about this after Saturns period of retrograde, and will be ready to re-commit to a steady course. While Mars
is joining Saturn here, be careful not to burn (or blow up) any bridges, especially with creative or service applications.

Libra
For Libra Rising individuals, Saturn is halfway through his transit
of your 2nd house of money, possessions, and immediate family.
You may be feeling some constraints on your wallet right now,
and a consistent pressure to work hard to meet your material and
familial needs. Your determination and perseverance will carry
you through this period, but it is a more frugal time than you are
used to. You feel deeply vulnerable about not having enough, but
this period of austerity will help you to overcome that fear and do
some real inner strengthening and transformation.
You are reevaluating the importance of your material possessions.
Although your Venusian nature naturally draws you towards beauty and even decadence, this Saturn transit will make
you take a deeper look at what aspects of your material life have enduring value (and which do not), and you may refine
your taste a bit towards more simple and important objects. You are learning to be more responsible in spending. His
retrograde course is giving you a good chance to reflect on all of this, and perhaps restructure your patterns of work,
saving, and expenses.
Saturn rules your 4th and 5th houses, so you may feel some delays or confusion around your homelife, real estate, and
your children or creative pursuits. You are reconsidering your long-term goals in these areas, thinking about making
some shifts, and contemplating what offers the most long-term value. You may feel some pressure on your heart. You
will begin feeling more clear after Saturns period of retrograde, and will be ready to re-commit to a steady course. While
Mars is joining Saturn here, be careful not to burn (or blow up) any bridges, especially around work and finances.
Channel that Martian energy into some yogic discipline for yourself, have patience, and avoid arguing.

Scorpio
For Scorpio Rising individuals, Saturn is halfway through his
transit of your first house. You feel a weight of responsibility
sitting on your head. All of your actions are filtered through a lens
of gravity and seriousness, causing you to contemplate all your
moves in regards to the long-term consequences. You are under a
great deal of pressure, as you get more serious about your goals in
life, and are stepping into more responsibility through dedication
to hard work. As a Scorpio, you are naturally aware of your own
vulnerability and the sudden changes that always seem to happen
in life, so it can naturally raise a bit of fear as you invest yourself
into a more structured life.
The slow transit of Saturn through your lagna (1st house) gives you the chance to really grow into these changes and
step up to the challenge. Especially during Saturns retrograde course, you have the chance to reevaluate where you
choose to be committed in life. You are reflecting on your own identity, and may feel a lack of energy at times with the
weight of Saturn. Be very aware of vata health concerns (be sure to stay grounded and well-nourished).
Saturn rules your 3rd and 4th houses, so you may feel some delays or confusion around your hobbies, siblings, your
homelife, and real estate. This is a time of reconsidering your long-term goals in these areas, or rethinking some past
moves. You are considering making some shifts, and contemplating what offers the most enduring value. You will begin
feeling more clear about this after Saturns period of retrograde, and will be ready to commit to a steady course. While
Mars is joining Saturn here, be careful not to burn (or blow up) any bridges. Mars is your ruling planet, and this transit
may make you want to destroy some of the structure you have been building in frustration, so try to practice patience.

Sagittarius
For Sagittarius Rising individuals, Saturn is halfway through his
transit of your 12th house of isolation and detachment from the
world. As Saturn approaches your first house, you feel the
impending heaviness that will come soon. You are finding yourself
with more alone time these days, and are feeling a bit out of touch
with your world, your family, and even yourself. You have a great
opportunity to turn your attention inward, and long periods of
meditation are well-supported right now.
Contacting that quiet place in yourself brings the chance to
experience deep transformation. You are facing your fears about
death and detachment to material objects. Through Saturns retrograde transit this summer, you have the chance to go
back and examine your chosen (or subconscious) path to detachment. You may have chosen escapist tendencies as an
attempted support mechanism for your emotional vulnerability. You have the chance now to seek more constructive
methods for strengthening this, such as a meditation retreat or practice.
Saturn rules your 2nd and 3rd houses, so you may feel some some limitations placed on your material wealth as well as
your hobbies and interests. You are also contemplating your long-term goals in these areas, and considering making
some shifts around your material values and interests. You are also reconsidering your commitment to hard work and
the responsibilities you take on for your family or your siblings. You will begin feeling more clear after Saturns period of
retrograde, and will be ready to re-commit to a steady course. While Mars is joining Saturn here, be careful not to burn
(or blow up) any bridges. Channel that Martian energy into some yogic discipline for yourself, so you it doesnt get the
best of you.

Capricorn
For Capricorn Rising individuals, Saturn is your ruling planet, and
is halfway through his transit of your 11th house of community,
friends, social networks, and your highest aspirations and
accomplishments. You are feeling some stress and pressure in
these areas right now. You are needing to work hard to maintain
friendships and connections, and to network in order to share
your work with the world. You may have taken up much more
responsibility than usual in your community, and may be in more
of a leadership role than as per usual.
During Saturns retrograde transit, you may be reconsidering your
commitment to this position, or to your status in society in general. You really want to make sure that what you are
offering to the world is something of lasting value, and you are working hard to build some structure behind it. This is a
time you are determined to be of service. You are also thinking about whether your friendships are really the most
supportive to your personal growth, and whether they have the potential for longevity. You may decide to make some
changes in social groups during this transit.
Saturn rules your first and 2nd houses, so you may feel some delays or confusion around your identity, and a slowing
down of income, but you have the potential for success in this area through consistent hard work. In this retrograde
period you are reconsidering your values in general, your responsibility, and your highest aspirations.

Aquarius
For Aquarius Rising individuals, Saturn is your ruling planet, and is
halfway through his transit of your 10th house of career. You are
feeling a lot of stress and pressure at work right now, and you may
feel that your work is progressing very slowly. You have the
determination and fortitude to stick with it, though, although
sometimes you may feel a lack of hope. The pressure could be
coming from a lack of sufficient work opportunities, which also
requires your perseverance. You may be distracted by the
intensity of your personal relationships right now, including
intense dealings with business associates. Remember to take care
of yourself and not overlook self-care or your own power.
During Saturns retrograde course you may be considering a change in job or career. You are contemplating making a
change that brings more long-term value into your work. You are especially thinking about how your commitment to
work affects your personal emotional stability. You may be called to do work that supports the emotional strength of
others (such as some kind of counseling or psychology).
Saturn is both your first house and 12th house ruler, so his retrograde course can cause some confusion around your
identity. You may find yourself wanting to retreat into isolation, even more so than usual. It is a time to really consider
what it is that you want to put out into the world, and how you want to be seen by others. Service is an important
practice for you, and your work should reflect that. You will begin feeling more clear after Saturns period of retrograde,
and will be ready to re-commit to a steady course. While Mars is joining Saturn here, be careful not to burn (or blow up)
any bridges. Channel that Martian energy into some yogic discipline for yourself, so you it doesnt get the best of you.

Pisces
For Pisces Rising individuals, Saturn is halfway through his transit
of your 9th house, related to teachers, higher education, your
philosophies and beliefs, and your father. You are feeling a lot of
pressure and the need for fortitude in these areas of life. You may
be working hard to complete some education but are finding
delays around it. There could be a lot of pressure coming at you
from your father or a guru or teacher, or you may have a very
strained relationship at the moment. Though you are normally
very inspired by your philosophy and beliefs, you might be in a bit
of a dry spell at the moment.
Saturns retrograde transit in particular may be causing you to back up and rethink which beliefs, philosophies and sets
of teachings you really want to stay committed to. You are reconsidering which ones offer you the most lasting value,
and support the transformation of your spirit and the strengthening of your inner warrior. You always gravitate towards
teachings that support your deep emotional nature. Your teachers are feeling particularly strict at the moment, though,
which can be difficult on your sensitive disposition. You may be able to strengthen yourself, however, through
perseverance and dedication to the ones you know have enduring value for your spirit.
Saturn rules your 11th and 12th houses, so you may feel some delays or confusion around your place in society, and your
bigger hopes and dreams. You may find yourself spending time alone. You are reconsidering your long-term goals for
service to society and in your community. You will begin feeling more clear about this after Saturns period of
retrograde, and will be ready to re-commit to a steady course. While Mars is joining Saturn here, be careful not to burn
any bridges, especially with friends or teachers. Channel that Martian energy into some yogic discipline, instead.
