Summary:
Active Directory or simply AD is an operating system created by Microsoft Inc. to store data
about users. This data may include the users name, position, age, etc. The reason this active
director is so useful is because it complies all of the different users information into one spot.
This lets firms and companies get information extremely quickly without having to look in my
places for a piece of information. The Active Directory also lets a user give other users access to
different things like applications and programs. The two types of access are the transitive and
non-transitive trusts. In transitive trust a user can give another user access to a domain or tree
where as in a non-transitive trust the user is not given access. Active Directory is general used by
large corporations and not small businesses. Some examples of a company that uses Active
Directory is Ciena Corp.
Application to Research:
This article is useful to my research because it is giving me information on something I
have discussed in my internship with my mentor. With the help if this article I am able to better
understand what exactly an Active Directory is and the different aspects of it. With this
information I will be on step ahead of the game in my internship.

Microsoft began by explaining that cancer is like a computer virus but its a virus that cannot be
fixed or solved by fixing a code. Microsoft researchers said they have created a new healthcare
initiative to use artificial intelligence to track down and kill cancerous cells in a body or
organism. One of the first steps the researchers are taking to create this healthcare plan is to use
machines and language processing to search through research data and come up with a treatment
plan. Another so called moonshot the researchers are aiming for is to eventually use computer
vision and radiology to see how tumors have progressed over time and how they have evolved.
Eventually the researchers want to learn how to program cells to fix mistakes that the human
body has not been able to fix yet. Currently the company is pouring lost of money and
investment into this research so that it can advance as fast as possible.
Application to Research:
This article will help me with my research because again it is giving me background information
on what type of current and upcoming research is being conducted in the field of computer
science, specifically artificial intelligence. Hopefully this knowledge will give me a head start in
working at my internship.

On Thursday is was announced that Samsung Electronic Co. will buy the artificial
intelligence company Viv Labs Inc. The reason this is such a big acquisition for Samsung
Electronics Co. is because Viv Labs Inc. was the company that created siri for the iPhone so this
is a clear sign that Samsung Electronics Co. is trying to beef up its own artificial systems,
whether it is on the phone or computer hardware. This acquisition is consistent with Samsung
Electronic Co.s trend because in the last four year this has been their fourth acquisition of an
American artificial intelligence company. This shows Samsung Electrons willingness to focus
on their weaknesses to try to strengthen those areas. According to leaders in the Samsung
company Viv Labs has many technologies that would be beneficial to Samsung.

This article is useful to my research because it is updating me on what is going on in the
world of artificial intelligence. If I am updated on which companies own programs then I might
me more useful in my internship. Also the article game me some more general information about
artificial intelligence in general.

Summary:
Recently the school systems in the district of Nagpur in Maharashtra, India have started using an
Android application that will track the attendance of all of its students. This information will be
loaded and saved into a database, which will then be given to authorities to access for
information. Each teacher in the school system will download an application and in this
application they will login using credentials given by their school. The application will allow
teachers to simply click on the students that are absent and then submit the results. If the teachers
do not have Internet connection they can still take attendance and the application will synch with
the database at a later time. The database behind this application is called SARAL and it can spit
out statistical information extremely quickly as well as track a students performance. The
SARAL database is better than the U-DISE, a database controlled by the central government,
because it can yield quicker results with its more efficient filters.
Application to Research:
This article is useful to my research because it is giving me information on something
upcoming in the school database area. The article has shown me how databases are being
implemented in areas that are not as developed, so the change due to the database is seen more
drastically.

Create Lists in SharePoint 2013. Performance by Mark Rackley, 2012.

Summary:
To create a list in Microsofts SharePoint 2013 you must first go to the file Site Contents. Once
in Site Contents click on add an app and this will take you to a variety of different choices.
Within all of these choices chose Custom List. When you click on Custom List give it a
name and this name should be an overall encompassing name for your list. Once the list is
created it will pop up in the Sites Contents file and you will be able to edit your list from here.
In editing your list, you will be able to change the number of columns and name each column. In
a Customer Contact List you will want to have the customers email, phone number, first
name, last name, company, company type, web address, and notes columns.
Application to Research:
This video is a very good tool to conduct my research and internship in general. This is because
it lets me understand something my mentor and I talked about which was how to make a list in
Microsofts SharePoint. This will also help me in my research because it will allow me to learn
how SharePoint, a database, can be used and exploited.

Summary:
One of the most popular and biggest ways database information is leaked is through SQL
Injections. SQL Injections are when unexpected data is send to another webserver that is
interacting with another database. The data is sent with SQL statements that can expose any data
that is unsecured. To prevent any unwanted SQL injections one must sanitize input that is
given from a user. This means you must remove semicolons and black tick marks from the SQL
code since these two things are essential for a SQL script to run.

This article relates to my research because it is updating me on how many the most popular
types of databases breaches occur. The article also goes deep into listing the how and different
methods by which SQL Injections can occur which is very beneficial to my project.

Summary:
On October 21, 2016 a teacher in the Delaware School Systems grabbed a student by the feet and
dragged her for a couple of feet in the hallway. This action was caught on camera by their
surveillance camera but due to a power surge the video was temporarily lost and is still lost. The
databases systems experienced a power surge which wiped out many videos and information in
general. Fortunately there are chances that the video might be recovered but the video might also

be lost forever. The APC backup system the school uses is one of many standard back up systems
the school uses and the school should have installed it before the power surge occurred. If this
system had been in place then the videos and the other lost information could have been saved.
Application to Research:
This article relates to my research because it is updating me on the current databases that are
available for schools to use. This article was especially helpful because it hold strong information
that centralized databases are extremely beneficial to school systems. For example, if the school
had a centralized database back up then the information would not have been lost in the first
place.

Summary:
Until the 2013-2014 school year the Howard County School System has used the Aspen program
to upload student grades for parents, teachers, and administrators to view. The 2015-2016 year
will be the first year that the Howard County School System will be switching over to a new set
of programs called Canvas and Synergy. The transition from Aspen to Synergy and Canvas was
supposed to be smooth but that is not how it occurred. The school system had been using Aspen
for the past four years so the students, parents, and teachers had gotten used to its system. Even
though there has been some problems with Aspens maintenance and navigation, the abrupt
transition to canvas and synergy caused a lot of confusion and frustration. The problem with
Aspen had been that it was too old fashion and was not appealing to the eye. The cost for
implementing Canvas and Synergy was $3.6 million and this was an extremely large amount of
money. In addition, students and teachers were not given time to learn the new program. Instead
they were plunged into the new technology with no guidance.
Application to Research:
This article relates to my research because it is updating me why Howard County Public School
Systems change to Canvas and Synergy from Aspen was such a big deal. The article also helps
me because it shows me some of the draw backs of implementing the Canvas and Synergy
programs, which allows me to understand how the database could have been bettered.

publish their work, which means that the content of the published work is checked for accuracy
and reliability. Database searchers are also more precise. This means that databases will allow
you to personalize the search more where are search engine will bring up anything related to the
topic you have searched. Databases are also safer because there are no pop advertisements and
other images. When you search information on a search engine there is possibilities of the user
hitting an advertisements and reaching a virus.

This article relates to my research because it is updating me the current positive things
about databases. It explains to me why databases are more useful to use than search engine. This
article was also very helpful because it cleared up some questions I had about databases in

Summary:
Education Management Tools is one of the most popular and upcoming databases schools are
using currently. Education Management Tools lets a school do a variety of things. It has an
online registration portal, which allows parents to sign their kids up for the next year. It has an
administration portal, which allows teachers to utilize in student/parent communication, report
cards, transcripts, and online payments. The teacher portal is much more specific to teachers in
the sense that it allows teachers to make lesson plans, access grades, put in grades, take
attendance, missing reports, etc. Some pros to using Education Management Tools are that it
has tweaked their systems in order to accommodate for specific desires made from schools.
Teachers have also seen it makes school processes faster since it take away many paper
processes.
Application to Research:
This article is a very good tool to conduct my research and internship in general. This is because
it lets me understand some of the other important databases that are circulating through the field
currently. Knowing how one of the most popular database in school systems work is really

Summary:
Many companies use SharePoint, an enterprise content management system, for its document
management system. The document management system is used for document file sharing and
organization. Some companies also use SharePoint for workflows that are mostly document
workflows. The reason that this document management system is so helpful is because this helps
employees secure/find documents and audit documents. The problem is that many companies
that use SharePoint say that we dont use it like we should. This is a shame because SharePoint
is going to get better and better since it is not part of the Office365 version that allows employees
and companies to collaborate in one place. Companies need to start using the other aspects of the
SharePoint and exploit the other resources that it contains.

Purdue University computer science professor Alex Pothen is currently trying to solve problems
related to large networks that consist of billions of nodes and links. This research could
potentially benefit areas ranging from medical research to computer problems. The research
group has recently received a grant from Intel Corp. to continue research in the field and so that
the group can create new algorithms and programs to help improve process large networks.
According to Pothen, current algorithms can take days to process information. The research
Pothen is conducting research that could reduce the amount of time it takes to process
information to within a couple hours. Some real word applications of this research are for
helping medical school applicants. This algorithm could potentially take all medical school
applicants and match them with the best suited medical school for them.
Application to Research:
This article gave me new insights on what types of computer science research are being
conducted. This article also gave me insights as to what type of research questions I might want
to formulate. I am now thinking about big data research and how computer science applies to it.

grades online so that they can understand what they need to do to receive the grade they can in a
class. Students can also keep track of data and documents if there is a database to store the
information. This way students will not need to keep a flash-drive and risk losing all of the work

was named the second best database of 2014. The reason the EBSCO Academic Search Premier
database is so good is because it simply has so many journals for the students to access and the
number of journals it holds is close to 14,000. Also, all of these journals are peer-reviewed and
are reliable with an emphasis on science. The third best database of 2014 was the Global Issues
in Context. The Gale database was generated huge statistics that shows that its database is wide
utilized. The database goes beyond the pros and cons of a subject and really dives deeper into the
issue.

it lets me understand some of the aspects that make a database extremely good for school use.

the globe. The Intranet usually consists of things such as company newsletters, health and safety
policies, company events, etc. On a more important field the Intranet can be used by a companies
employees to access portals. The Intranet is protected from the Extranet by a series of firewalls.
Due to these firewalls employees will only be able to access the Intranet using a VPN or Virtual
Private Network. The Extranet is usually a giant server or database where many different
companies can come together to get required information. The Extranet is protected by
encryption and tangled codes.
Application to Research:
This article is useful to my research because it is has given me more
information on the Intranet and the Extranet. The Intranet and the Extranet are two
topics that were discussed in my internship and doing more research on those
aspects will definitely help me better understand what my mentor is talking about.

In the past artificial intelligence has appeared in things such as movies as something that is
completely futuristic but in reality, artificial intelligence has now arrived. Today artificial
intelligence can drive your car, translate texts, detect your friends in pictures, and may more
impressive things. However, there is one things missing from the artificial intelligence industry
and that thing is an ethics code. A new group that consists of Amazon, Facebook, Apple, Google,
Microsoft, and IBM have not joined together to discuss this ethics code and try to create and
industry wide standard. This conversation has been going on for years and now the biggest
players in the artificial industry have a chance to talk it over. One thing the companies have
decided is that they will include academic and nonprofit researchers so that ethical secure and
reliable technologies will be made. The competition for artificial intelligence has grown
extremely fast over the years. Experts in the field knew the surge was coming but they did not
know when the surge would occur.

Application to Research:
This article relates to my topic because it has given me lots of good information on artificial
intelligence in general. Rather than teaching me the technology behind the artificial intelligence
the article has taught me the moral aspects and issues behind the artificial intelligence. This type

A $100 million dollar database that is supposed to store records of millions of public school
students across the united states has recently faced some set back as many states officials have
walked away from the database due to protests from angry parents. The database reportedly
supposed to contain many types of data on students such as test scores, learning disabilities,
discipline records, assessments of the childs character, and many other data points. These data
points are supposed to help teachers because it would allow them to look in one place to receive
all the information they need on one student. Teachers could also use the database to identify a
students weakness and then create a lesson plan to accommodate for those weaknesses. The
database will organize students through categories such as name, race, economic status, and
other metrics and this will make it easier for school systems to share their data with education
software developing companies. As of now there have been many school systems across the
country that have pulled out of the database because their main worry is with the security of the
database. The school systems do not know where the data is stored or if the data will remain
secure. Supporters of the InBloom project argue that they simply want to consolidate the
information and create a blueprint for the future. The InBloom also centralizes all of the
applications teachers normally use to they do not need to switch from page to page.

schools. A list of comments are also provided so that the user can look at other peoples
experiences with the program and what they thought of it.

One of the biggest advantages of integrating databases into schools and education is that a
database will allow you to access documents and assignments throughout the year from
kindergarten to twelfth grade. The top three applications that schools can use are FileMaker Pro,
Lotus SmartSuites Approach, and Microsoft Access. The FileMaker Pro is an application that
pulls many different templates from a database. The pros of using the Lotus SmartSuites
Approach is that its user interface is extremely well made, which makes it easy to use. However,
the Microsoft Access is the most mainstream and powerful database out of all three. The
information in Microsoft Access can be stored for a long time and it can be stored throughout
your grade schooling. Also the Microsoft Access works just as smoothly with a large population
as a small population.

Microsoft in not falling behind in the research area of artificial intelligence. Microsoft is trying to
develop technologies to help computers recognize patterns from and process large amounts of
data. Recently, the Chief Executive Officer of Microsoft, Satya Nadella explained his vision and
direction for artificial intelligence in the future. Nadellas main argument is that he does not want
to create artificial intelligence to beat humans in games. Rather he wants to make artificial
intelligence to help people such as business people save time in analyzing vast amounts of data.
Nadella has claimed that Microsoft has divided artificial intelligence into four groups. These four
groups include: agents, applications, services, and infrastructure. Currently Nadella claimed that
Microsoft can search through third-party applications like LinkedIn for employees. Nadella also
stated that Microsoft will be using its artificial intelligence to help the national football league
create a better fantasy football app.
Application to Research:
This article relates to my research because it is updating me on the current research that is
occurring in the computer science field. Computer science is the main topic of my research so if I
go into my internship with a lot of background data then I will be able to relate and get on board
with my mentor much quicker.

publish their work, which means that the content of the published work is checked for accuracy
and reliability. Database searchers are also more precise. This means that databases will allow
you to personalize the search more where are search engine will bring up anything related to the
topic you have searched. Databases are also safer because there are no pop advertisements and
other images. When you search information on a search engine there is possibilities of the user
hitting an advertisements and reaching a virus.
